Nico Iamaleava is walking into a roster ranked 26th nationally in talent that still finished 3-9 and gave up 33.4 points a game, which makes Bob Chesney's first year less a rebuild than a referendum on whether that talent was ever coached to its level.
Can a defense returning just 20.5% of its production hold together under a brand-new staff? Bob Chesney is essentially starting over on that side of the ball in year one, and with almost the entire unit gone, growing pains are more likely than a quick fix in 2026. Nico Iamaleava and the offense return enough pieces to carry some weight, but this team's ceiling gets set by how fast a nearly all-new defense finds itself.
Bob Chesney's first season at UCLA comes with a No. 32 schedule, gentler than last year's grind that produced a 3-9 finish, and the projection of 5-7 with 38% bowl odds reflects a slate that's mostly winnable outside three games. Oregon on the road (4%) is essentially unplayable, and Michigan away (13%) isn't far behind, but the season's real referendum is USC at home, where a 19% edge means the Bruins are underdogs in their own building for the rivalry game. Everything else, from Purdue and Michigan State at home to the trips to Cal, Maryland and Minnesota, sits close enough to even that Chesney's actual test is stacking those coin-flip wins, not surviving the marquee three.

Bob Chesney takes over a program that finished 3-9 and 3-6 in league play, and there is no returning-production cushion or veteran quarterback story to lean on here, just a new staff sorting through what was left behind. A first-year hire gets the benefit of a clean slate, which matters more than the record itself since last season's results belong to the previous regime, not this one. UCLA sits at No. 64 in the power ratings, a neutral marker that leaves plenty of room for Chesney's own identity to take shape in 2026 rather than a verdict on what he inherited.
Nico Iamaleava's 13 touchdowns against 7 interceptions were not the reason UCLA scored 18.2 points per game, ranked 124th in points per scoring opportunity. The offense stalled in the red zone and never hit explosive plays, ranking 120th in explosiveness, and that is squarely a scheme and supporting-cast problem Iamaleava now inherits for a second year under Bob Chesney. If UCLA's 2026 turnaround is real, it starts with Iamaleava's returning arm finally getting matched by an offense that finishes drives instead of settling for the league's worst scoring efficiency.
Nico Iamaleava arrived with fanfare and produced middling results, tossing 13 touchdowns against 7 interceptions while the offense stalled at 18.2 points per game, 125th nationally. Bob Chesney inherits him as the unquestioned starter, and the fix has to come from turning empty possessions into points, since UCLA ranked 124th in points per scoring opportunity even with respectable rushing numbers. The QB room got deeper behind him with Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach, who threw for 1305 yards elsewhere, but 2026 is about whether Iamaleava's arm finally matches the hype under a new staff.
No back on last year's roster topped 306 yards, so Bob Chesney went to the portal and landed Wayne Knight, who ran for 1,373 yards and 9 touchdowns at James Madison, to be the workhorse this offense hasn't had. Anthony Woods (294 yards) and Jaivian Thomas (306 yards, 1 TD) return to split carries behind him, but Knight's production dwarfs anything UCLA got out of the room in a season that finished 85th in rushing yards per game. With Jalen Berger's 364 yards and Anthony Frias II's 183 yards both gone, this is now Knight's backfield to carry, and he arrives with a track record none of the returners can match.
UCLA gutted its receiving room and rebuilt it almost entirely through the portal. Kwazi Gilmer's 50 catches and Titus Mokiao-Atimalala's 322 yards are gone, replaced by San José State's Leland Smith (43 catches, 695 yards, 3 TD) and James Madison's Landon Ellis (36 catches, 624 yards, 5 TD), a pair of proven producers who arrive with more career yardage than anyone left on the roster. Mikey Matthews (33 catches, 348 yards) is the lone returning target with any track record, while four-star Florida transfer Aidan Mizell and true freshman additions Kenneth Moore III and Jonah Smith give Bob Chesney's first UCLA offense a talent influx that last year's group, stuck at 180 passing yards per game and 115th nationally, badly needed.
UCLA didn't just lose production at tight end, it rebuilt the room entirely, importing four transfers to replace Hudson Habermehl, Jack Pedersen and Jake Renda almost wholesale. Josh Phifer arrives from James Madison with 4 catches for 40 yards and a touchdown, and Brayden Loftin joins from Kansas State off 6 grabs for 55 yards, giving Bob Chesney two ready-made pass catchers to plug into an offense that ranked 115th in passing yards per game a year ago. With Peter Bario, Dylan Sims and holdover Noah Fox-Flores offering little proven résumé, Phifer and Loftin are the actual bet here, and how quickly they mesh with a rebuilt passing attack will shape whether this unit stops being an afterthought.
Bob Chesney inherits a line that allowed 27 sacks and helped produce just 5.21 yards per play, 107th nationally, numbers bad enough that ten linemen are out the door, including Noah Pulealii, Reuben Unije and Courtland Ford. The fix leans heavily on outside additions: Quinn Buckey and Jordan Davis arrive at tackle from Liberty and South Alabama, Riley Robell comes in from James Madison, and Cooper Javorsky joins as a high school signee out of San Juan Hills. With no depth chart to lean on, seniors like Julian Armella, K.D. Arnold and Jaylan Jeffers give this group its experience, but this is a rebuild up front and the transfers and true freshman signee will have to hold up immediately for UCLA to move off last season's 320 yards per game.
UCLA's line produced 10 sacks and 40 tackles for loss a year ago, numbers that explain 136th and 133rd national finishes in those categories, and the departures of Gary Smith III and Keanu Williams strip away the two leading tacklers from that group. Bob Chesney's answer came almost entirely from the portal: Sahir West (46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 14 TFL) and Aiden Gobaira (33 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7.5 TFL) both arrive from James Madison and instantly outproduce anyone UCLA is bringing back, including Cole Cogshell's modest 4 tackles and 1 sack. This is a near-total transplant up front, and West's pass-rush juice is the difference between repeating a 12.0% havoc rate and actually pressuring people in 2026.
UCLA lost its two leading tacklers at linebacker, JonJon Vaughns (107 tackles) and Isaiah Chisom (84 tackles), gutting a group that already couldn't get off blocks, evident in the 133rd-ranked tackles-for-loss mark and 129th-ranked run-stuff rate. Jalen Woods (47 tackles, 4.5 TFL) is the lone proven returner of consequence, and new coach Bob Chesney is patching the rest with James Madison transfer Drew Spinogatti, who brings real production (51 tackles, 6.5 TFL) into a starting spot immediately. The rest of the fix is projection: four-star Oklahoma transfer Sammy Omosigho and true freshmen like Matthew Muasau and Anthony Sacca have zero game tape, which means the run defense that ranked 119th in yards allowed per game is betting on unproven talent to solve a problem proven veterans couldn't.
UCLA's secondary loses its two leading tacklers, Cole Martin and Key Lawrence, off a defense that let opponents stay on schedule at a 50.3% clip and finished 128th in points allowed per game. Derrick Barksdale and Rodrick Pleasant, both at 36 tackles, anchor the returning group, but Bob Chesney is leaning on the portal to rebuild the back end, bringing in Tao Johnson (50 tackles, 2.5 TFL at Utah) and Ta'Shawn James (33 tackles at Iowa State) at safety. With Jhase McMillan added at corner and a run defense that ranked 119th in yards allowed per carry, the newcomers need to hit the ground running rather than develop on the fly.
UCLA turned over its specialists heading into Bob Chesney's first year, importing Curtis Gerrand from Sam Houston after he averaged 43 yards on 64 punts, a workload that dwarfs anything on the incumbent depth chart. He arrives to push Lennox Miller, who has no prior statistics logged, while Oklahoma State transfer Chase Barry adds a 52-yard leg on a single career punt. The bigger void is at placekicker, where Mateen Bhaghani's 16-of-20 mark and 70 points are gone and Mateo Orosco steps in with zero recorded attempts, leaving the Bruins to find that production almost entirely on trust.
Bob Chesney did not just bring his staff west, he brought a chunk of his old roster with him, pulling Wayne Knight, Landon Ellis, Drew Spinogatti and Sahir West over from his prior stop. That group has to replace real production lost on defense, where JonJon Vaughns (107 tackles) and Isaiah Chisom (84 tackles) are both gone, leaving West's 6.5 sacks and Spinogatti's 6.5 TFL as the new foundation up front. Nico Iamaleava returns at quarterback off a 1928-yard, 13-touchdown season, and with Semaj Morgan and Leland Smith added at receiver behind him, UCLA's ceiling in year one under Chesney is tied to how fast that imported core meshes with the pieces he inherited.
UCLA didn't chase a transfer quarterback fix, it chased a ground game, and Wayne Knight's 1,373 yards at James Madison are the reason. Nico Iamaleava's 7 interceptions last season mean this offense needs Knight to shoulder the load behind Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas rather than lean on its returning passer to fix himself. If Knight's production translates against Big Ten fronts, it buys Iamaleava the manageable throws he didn't have in 2025.
UCLA under Bob Chesney is walking into a market that still trusts the home crowd more than the roster deserves, and bettors have been burned every time this team has been favored in the Rose Bowl, going 0-3 against the spread as a home chalk. Flip the venue and the profile flips too. As a road underdog UCLA covers at a 60% clip, a live number for a first-year staff still building an identity away from home. The gap between those two situations, not the 3-9 record, is the real number to track into 2026.
