Jared Curtis inherits a roster ranked 55th nationally in talent that outplayed that ceiling last fall, and Vanderbilt's whole season bets that a home-state prospect can keep an offense humming at a scoring pace that ranked 8th in the country without Diego Pavia's improvisation.
Can Jared Curtis produce enough as a true freshman to keep Vanderbilt's offense from regressing with just 33.9% of its production back? The most likely path is a slow burn rather than instant replacement of Pavia's output, since Curtis has zero prior college snaps and the skill pieces around him are largely unproven too. Clark Lea's defense, which returns 53.6% of its production, will need to carry the team through however long that freshman learning curve runs.
Vanderbilt's 2025 breakthrough gets its real test in a brutal midseason run: at Georgia, home against Alabama and at Florida form the stretch that decides whether Clark Lea's program is a fluke or a fixture, with the Commodores projected underdogs in all three. A more manageable slate around it, home dates with NC State and Arkansas plus road trips to Kentucky and Mississippi State, gives Vanderbilt a real path to the bowl eligibility the projections lean toward. Split that gauntlet even once and the six-win projection undersells where this team is headed.

Clark Lea's sixth year opens with a power rating of 29th and a 6-2 league mark that both back up the results rather than flatter them. The warning signs sit underneath: a defense that gave up points too cheaply relative to yardage allowed, a 3-2 mark in one-score games, and only 34% returning production. None of those component scores tilt hard enough to call last season a mirage, but they argue against banking on another 10-3 rerun, and Lea's staff will need the offense's scoring efficiency to hold while so much of the roster turns over.
Vanderbilt ran the most efficient offense in the country in 2025, leading the nation in yards per play at 7.51 and success rate at 51.9 percent, and now hands the keys to Jared Curtis with none of that production carrying over on paper. The Nashville Christian product has no prior college stats, but he inherits a scheme that scored on 5.00 points per opportunity (3rd nationally) and moved the ball through the air at a top-10 clip. The defense, meanwhile, has real teeth up front (31 sacks, 81 tackles for loss) but got carved up through the air at 118th in passing yards allowed, so how fast Curtis matches last year's passing punch may matter less than whether that secondary tightens up.
Diego Pavia is gone, and with him the engine of a 10-3 team that led the nation in yards per play and success rate, but Vanderbilt didn't scramble for a replacement so much as land the exact opposite of a reclamation project: Jared Curtis, the top-ranked recruit in the 2026 class, arrives from Nashville Christian as the settled starter from day one. That's a stunning swing for a program replacing 3,539 passing yards with a true freshman, but Clark Lea isn't dropping him into a rebuild, he's inheriting an offense that ranked in the top ten nationally in scoring and passing yardage with its infrastructure intact. Blaze Berlowitz and Drew Cowart provide experienced insurance, but this offense's ceiling in 2026 rides entirely on how fast Curtis can play up to the machine already built around him.
Sedrick Alexander is the engine here, coming off 570 yards and 11 touchdowns behind a line that helped Vanderbilt post the No. 1 offensive success rate in the country. Makhilyn Young's 411 yards give Clark Lea a legitimate one-two punch even with AJ Newberry's 57 yards and 3 scores gone from the room, and the offense's yards-per-play efficiency should keep this backfield operating in space rather than grinding it out. Four-star Owensboro signee Evan Hampton and three-star Izayah Lee add fresh juice, but with the passing game humming at 287 yards a game and rushing output still just 49th nationally, this stays Alexander and Young's show in 2026.
Junior Sherrill returns off a 54-catch, 784-yard year as the clear focal point, but Vanderbilt had to rebuild around him after Tre Richardson (810 yards) and Richie Hoskins (321 yards) both departed. The portal answer is Ja'Cory Thomas, who arrives from Old Dominion with 41 catches for 714 yards and 5 touchdowns, giving this group a proven second option rather than an unproven one. Cole Adams, a transfer from Alabama with 71 yards on 5 catches, adds further depth to an offense that ranked 1st nationally in yards per play a year ago, and the group's ceiling depends on how fast Thomas and Adams sync with what Sherrill already built.
Eli Stowers took 61 catches and 765 yards out the door, and Vanderbilt answered by importing production rather than hoping for it: Jayvontay Conner arrives from East Carolina with 23 grabs and 333 yards already on his résumé, ready to slide into the role Stowers vacated in an offense that ran the nation's most efficient snap-to-snap attack. Cole Spence returns as the lone proven holdover at 15 catches and 233 yards, while Elijah Rooney and Walter Taylor are unproven depth pieces around him. With Tilden Riley, Adam Gehm, Walter Taylor III and Maurice Veney all added to the room, Conner's transfer production is the clearest signal the position won't be a drop-off point for a passing game that finished 10th nationally in yards per game.
That 7.51 yards per play mark, best in the country, came from a line that is now scattering nine bodies out the door, including David Siegel, Bryce Henderson and Jordan White. Clark Lea leaned on the transfer market to patch it, landing Beau Johnson from North Dakota State and Micah DeBose from Alabama up front, while the high school class adds four-star tackle Mitchell Smith and three-star signees Pulelei'ite Primus and Tripp Skewes. Seniors Cade McConnell, Gunner Givens and Max Fisher are the most experienced names left in the room, but with no way to know who actually started, this unit reads as a rebuild trying to protect a passing game that ranked 10th nationally a year ago.
Vanderbilt lost five contributors up front, including its sack leader Khordae Sydnor and Zaylin Wood, but the 2026 line is being rebuilt through the portal rather than hope. Miles Capers, who piled up 9 TFL and 4.5 sacks, anchors the edge, while Jacksonville State transfer Talan Carter arrives with 55 tackles and 7 TFL of his own production and four-star Iowa transfer Brian Allen adds a name to watch even without a stat line yet. That run defense finished 17th in rushing yards allowed, so the bigger question is whether this retooled front can push a pass defense that ranked 118th in yards allowed per game, since new bodies alone will not fix a coverage problem the line cannot solve by itself.
Bryan Longwell's 70 tackles and 8.5 TFL anchor a unit that stayed stout against the run (108 yards allowed per game, 17th nationally) even as the pass defense got exposed at 118th in yards allowed per game. Nick Rinaldi and Bryce Cowan return with real production off the edge and in the box, but the departures of Langston Patterson and Randon Fontenette strip out two of the top three tacklers from a group that generated 81 tackles for loss. Vanderbilt's front seven should still get after the run, but until Longwell's supporting cast proves it can hold up in coverage, the same passing-game leaks that plagued this defense in 2025 look likely to linger.
Vanderbilt stopped the run at an elite clip in 2025 but bled yards through the air, ranking 118th in passing yards allowed, and that split defines what this secondary must fix in 2026. CJ Heard (71 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Martel Hight anchor the back end, but the corner room lost Mark Davis and Kolbey Taylor, pushing Jordan Matthews and Jaylin Lackey into larger roles alongside four-star Ole Miss high school signee Collin Flanigan. At safety, Clark Lea added Clemson transfer Ricardo Jones, who brings 39 tackles of experience to pair with CJ Heard and Dontae Carter, giving Vanderbilt more proven bodies to fix a pass defense that lagged well behind its run-stopping numbers.
Brock Taylor is the story here, and he's back after going 13 of 14 with a long of 51 and 99 points, giving Vanderbilt a proven weapon in a specialist group that otherwise leans on unproven names. The punting job changes hands: Nick Haberer's 46.9-yard average walks out the door, and Tyler Ebel arrives from South Dakota having punted 47 times at a 46.4 average, essentially replacing that production directly rather than leaving it to camp. With Conor Weasler also in the punter mix and Kaden Schickel joining from Michigan State to handle long-snapping duties, the drop-off risk sits almost entirely on the punt unit, not on Taylor's leg.
Diego Pavia's 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns walk out the door, along with the top three pass-catchers in Tre Richardson, Eli Stowers and Richie Hoskins, so Vanderbilt is rebuilding its entire passing offense around Jared Curtis with almost no returning proof of concept at the skill spots. The portal answer is Ja'Cory Thomas, who caught 41 balls for 714 yards at Old Dominion and instantly becomes the most trusted target for a first-time starter. Clark Lea also restocked the front seven with transfers like Talan Carter and Edwin Kolenge to offset Langston Patterson and Khordae Sydnor leaving, but this season rides on how fast Curtis and Thomas find chemistry after a 10-win year built on a quarterback who is gone.
Vanderbilt hands the offense to Jared Curtis, a true freshman with zero prior statistics, tasked with replacing Diego Pavia's 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns outright. Sedrick Alexander and Makhilyn Young give him a run game to lean on and Junior Sherrill and transfer Ja'Cory Thomas give him a proven receiving corps, but every one of those pieces only matters if Curtis handles the job at quarterback from day one.
Clark Lea's team spent last season torching the number, covering as home favorites at a 6-1 clip and as road underdogs at 4-1, proof that oddsmakers never fully bought a 10-3 Vanderbilt as real. That gap between reputation and result carries into 2026, especially since the SEC slate covers went 7-1 and the club beat the spread five times in seven tries against ranked opponents. Until books stop pricing Vanderbilt like the old program, backing Lea's team remains the play, particularly at home.
