A No. 24 talent haul and a defense that bled 30.2 points a game in 2025 make this the classic Jeff Lebby riddle, a roster good enough to win the SEC West on paper that has instead gone 1-7 in it, and the answer now rests on whether Kamario Taylor can turn that talent into points faster than Mississippi State's defense gives them back.
Can Kamario Taylor carry an offense that returns barely 39.7% of its production from a 5-8 team? Mississippi State is stripping the roster down around him with almost nothing else established, so his growth is less about flashing talent again and more about surviving a lineup full of unproven faces. Given how thin the returning corps is on both sides, expect a rocky, turnover-heavy stretch before Taylor and Jeff Lebby's staff settle on who can actually protect and support him.
Ranked 12th nationally for difficulty, this slate offers Mississippi State no margin, and the road defines it: trips to Texas (6% win), LSU (12%) and Ole Miss (18%) are the games that will tell the real story of Jeff Lebby's third year. Home dates with Alabama (20%) and Oklahoma (24%) round out a brutal top tier, but a projected 5-7 finish and 26% bowl odds hinge more on the ability to actually win the toss-up games against Missouri (36%), Vanderbilt (44%) and at Minnesota (52%). Split those coin flips and Starkville is bowling; lose them and 2026 looks a lot like 2025.

The 1-7 conference mark and a 43-29 bowl loss to Wake Forest are the surface read on Jeff Lebby's second year, but the yardage margin in those league games tells a different story: Mississippi State's actual win rate in those games ran well below what its per-game margin against league foes implied, the kind of gap that points to a bounce-back rather than another slide. A near-even turnover margin and a losing mark in one-score games mean none of the 2025 breaks were propping this group up artificially, so the No. 49 power rating looks closer to the truth than the standings do. Year 3 for Lebby arrives with the harder part, generating real per-game separation on the scoreboard, still the outstanding question.
Mississippi State's offense actually moved the needle in 2025, ranking 42nd in scoring and 22nd in points per opportunity, yet 44 sacks allowed (132nd nationally) show the real problem was up front, not at quarterback. Kamario Taylor, back after throwing for 629 yards with 5 touchdowns against just 1 interception, is projected to run the offense in 2026, and his efficiency suggests this attack can jump if Jeff Lebby's line buys him time. The bigger issue is defense, where a 110th-ranked havoc rate and 126th-ranked run-stuff rate point to a front seven that never disrupted anything, and until that group gets more disciplined at the line, Taylor's growth alone won't flip the record.
Kamario Taylor takes the first-team reps into 2026 after throwing for 629 yards and 5 touchdowns against just 1 interception in relief work, but Jeff Lebby imported three arms to push him: AJ Swann, who threw for 1,494 yards at App State, Jaden Rashada and Cass product Brodie McWhorter. Blake Shapen and Luke Kromenhoek are gone, and the passing game they left behind ranked just 54th nationally despite an offense that scored at a 42nd-ranked clip, so the bigger issue for whoever wins the job is a line that allowed 44 sacks, 132nd in the country. Taylor's efficiency gives him the edge, but this competition stays live into fall camp rather than being his to simply keep.
Fluff Bothwell's 677 yards and 6 scores make him the clear centerpiece now that Davon Booth's 552 yards and 7 touchdowns are off the roster, and the drop-off in proven punch behind him is real. Xavier Gayten (157 yards) and Brinston Williams (137 yards) offer some rotational cushion, but neither profiles as a true complement to Bothwell's workload, and Kolin Wilson has barely been tested. Gulfport's Cooper Crosby and Tupelo's Jaeden Hill arrive as unproven 3-star pieces, not saviors, so this backfield's 2026 outlook rests almost entirely on Bothwell carrying more of the load behind a line that allowed 44 sacks a year ago.
Anthony Evans III (67-831-4) is a legitimate No. 1 target, but Brenen Thompson's 1,054 yards walk out the door with him, and Mississippi State is replacing that explosive element with Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson, who caught just 28 balls for 345 yards last year. That's a downgrade in proven production behind Evans, with Ayden Williams (21-252) the only other returnee with real receiving numbers. The 2026 class adds four-star Jayden Cration and a trio of three-stars, but none profile as instant difference-makers, so this group's ceiling still runs through how much Evans can absorb the target share Thompson leaves behind.
Seydou Traore's 35 catches for 372 yards and 5 touchdowns walk out the door, and nobody left on campus has caught more than the 5 balls Sam West hauled in last fall. Jeff Lebby rebuilt the room from scratch, pulling Riley Williams in from Oregon State while signing four-star Zayion Cotton alongside high school recruits Adam Land and Luke Hutchinson, betting that sheer numbers cover for zero proven production. With the passing game already 54th in yards per game and an offensive line that allowed 44 sacks, West and Joeseph Skipworth need to give whoever starts at quarterback a reliable safety valve immediately, not by midseason.
A line that allowed 44 sacks, 132nd nationally, is the reason Mississippi State's offense stalled behind a promising 30.4 points per game. Jeff Lebby answered by rebuilding almost the entire room: 11 linemen departed against 11 returning, with seniors Canon Boone and Wesley Davis anchoring what comes back while LSU transfer Tyler Miller and high school signee Dalton Toothman arrive to fortify the tackle spots. With juniors Blake Steen, Jakheem Shumpert-Perkins and Kison Shepard also in the mix, this is a group being reassembled from scratch, and cutting those sack numbers matters more for 2026 than anything the yardage totals suggest.
A run defense that let opponents pick up 187 yards on the ground (116th) needed more than internal continuity, so Jeff Lebby went shopping for size and speed off the edge. Amaree Williams arrives from Florida State with 1.5 sacks already on his résumé, and four-star Micah Nickerson joins a returning group led by Jaray Bledsoe (5.5 TFL) and Will Whitson, whose 2 sacks and 4.5 TFL came in limited snaps. None of the departures (Kedrick Bingley-Jones, Jamil Burroughs) were difference-makers by the numbers, which means the 126th-ranked run-stuff rate is squarely on this retooled front to fix, not last year's cast.
Jalen Smith's 57 tackles headline a run defense that stopped runners behind the line just 14.3% of the time, a number that explains why Mississippi State bled 187 yards a game on the ground. Nic Mitchell and Malick Sylla, who combined for real disruption up front, are both gone as part of a group of seven linebackers who departed, leaving Zakari Tillman and Derion Gullette to supply the pass-rush juice that produced only 21 sacks as a defense last year. Florida State transfer Gav Holman and Syracuse transfer James Heard Jr. arrive as depth pieces rather than saviors, so the havoc has to come from the returning trio of Smith, Tillman and Gullette actually taking a step forward, not from the newcomers replacing lost production.
Mississippi State's secondary lost its two leading tacklers, Jahron Manning and Brylan Lanier, off a group that allowed 187 rushing yards a game, and the fix in the back end comes almost entirely from a 3-star pipeline rather than a portal splash. Isaac Smith (64 tackles) anchors things at safety, but the staff is banking on Rice transfer Marcus Williams (61 tackles, 3.5 TFL) to step into a starting safety spot immediately, flanked by true freshman Bralan Womack, the class's lone 4-star. Kelley Jones and Quentin Taylor return to hold down the corner spots, but with three unproven freshmen corners added and almost no returning takeaway production up front, a defense that ranked 116th in run defense has to find its havoc plays through improved coverage rather than a rebuilt front seven.
Kyle Ferrie made 17 of 20 field goals with a 55-yard long a year ago and comes back as the SEC's most proven leg on a roster that otherwise struggled, giving Jeff Lebby one settled spot on a special teams unit crowded with three other scholarship kickers in Oisin Flynn, William Wilkinson and incoming three-star Hayden Chambers. Ethan Pulliam's return at punter matters more than it looks on paper since he averaged 46.6 yards on 45 attempts, nearly doubling the workload and the per-kick average of departed punter Nathan Tiyce, so Mississippi State swaps volume punting for a legitimate weapon in the field-position game. With Kallen Cosper back to snap and Marlon Hauck's minimal kicking work off the books, the entire margin-for-error game comes down to whether Ferrie stays money from distance.
Mississippi State's league-game yardage margin actually pointed to a much better team than the 1-7 conference record showed, which makes the wholesale roster teardown under Jeff Lebby feel more like addition by subtraction than a fresh start after a bad year. Gone are the top three pass-catchers in Brenen Thompson and Seydou Traore, plus lead back Davon Booth and both starting safeties in Jahron Manning and Brylan Lanier, while Kamario Taylor is projected to take over at quarterback after throwing for 629 yards and 5 touchdowns in his 2025 look. The fixes came almost entirely off the portal defensively, with Florida State edge pair Amaree Williams and Jayson Jenkins and LSU safety Jardin Gilbert brought in to replace nearly the entire back seven, betting that new faces can finally match the level of play the yardage numbers already suggested was there.
Kamario Taylor threw for 629 yards and 5 touchdowns against just 1 interception in relief snaps last season, and now he is projected to open 2026 as the guy running Jeff Lebby's offense full-time. Whether that job holds depends on the weapons around him, with Anthony Evans III's 67 catches and 831 yards giving Taylor a proven target and Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson adding another option after posting 345 yards at his previous stop. A 1-7 league mark last year leaves little margin, and Taylor turning that limited sample into a full season of consistent quarterback play is what separates a step forward from another rebuild.
A 5-8 record hides how often Mississippi State was live at the window, and that gap defines the value case for 2026. Jeff Lebby's team covered eight of thirteen spots overall, including a perfect 2-0 as a home favorite and a 71% clip at home generally, well ahead of what a 1-7 conference mark suggests. The rougher truth is baked into the same numbers: this squad went 1-7 straight up against SEC opponents and 1-6 against ranked competition, so bettors got paid on the margin far more often than the roster got paid in the standings, a split that only closes if Lebby's group starts winning the games it has been merely covering.
