Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3Sun Belt · Clay Helton, year 5 · 7-6 last season · No. 103 in our FBS ratings
Clay Helton is essentially starting over with only 29% of last year's production back, betting that Max Johnson can mask the churn faster than a defense that gave up 32.3 points per game can fix itself.
Can Max Johnson win games with almost nobody around him who did it in 2025? With just 14.4% of offensive production returning, Johnson will be throwing to receivers and behind a line that have barely played together, and that gap is too wide for one transfer arm to close on its own. Expect the offense to lean on the defense, which brings back 43.7% of its production, to keep games close while Johnson and this rebuilt cast find their footing.
Georgia Southern's non-conference draw sets the tone before Sun Belt play even starts, a trip to Clemson at 6% and a home date with Houston at 20% that together look like the two hardest outs on the board. The projected 5-7 mark reflects a schedule ranked 88th in difficulty, and the Old Dominion road trip at 34% is the swing game buried inside conference play that could decide whether this team climbs back to bowl eligibility. Everything else, from Georgia State on the road to the home slate against App State and Marshall, sits close enough to even that Georgia Southern's season comes down to stealing at least one of those three defining tests.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Clay Helton's fourth season closed with a 29-10 bowl win over App State and a 7-6 finish, but the number that matters for 2026 is the gap between that record and how Georgia Southern actually played in conference: a 50.0% win rate in league games against a -57.0 yards/g margin that should have produced something closer to 36.7%. A 4-1 mark in one-score games and a +6 turnover margin padded the ledger further, and neither tends to repeat. None of that erases the bowl trophy, but it means Helton's fifth year needs the underlying numbers to catch up to the record, not the other way around.
The story here is a 36th-ranked success rate offense paired with a defense that let opponents stay on schedule 49.0% of the time and gave up 6.55 yards per play, a gap that explains a 7-6 season more than any single game did. Max Johnson arrives from North Carolina to run that offense, inheriting a unit that already moved the ball at 402 yards per game and hit on 44.7% of third downs, so the passing game should not be the problem. The +6 turnover margin bailed out a defense ranked 134th in yards allowed last year, and unless that defense finds more than 12 sacks worth of pressure, Georgia Southern is still riding its offense and its takeaways to make the numbers work.
JC French IV threw for 2,924 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, and none of that production returns under center. Georgia Southern replaced him with Max Johnson, who arrives from North Carolina after throwing for 437 yards and 2 scores there, and the offense builds around him rather than around Weston Bryan or Turner Helton, whose combined stat lines barely fill a box score. Johnson steps into a passing attack that ranked 47th nationally in yards per game and a group that protected the quarterback poorly, 99th in sacks allowed, so his ability to get the ball out against pressure will decide whether this offense keeps pace with its 2025 third-down success.
OJ Arnold's 1,037 yards walk out the door, and nobody left behind matched even a fifth of that total in 2025. David Mbadinga (196 yards) and Jamarian Samuel (87 yards, 1 TD) return as the top holdovers, with Taeo Todd and Bryce Baker offering depth rather than a clear lead back, so this reads as a rotation until someone separates. Ty Cummings arrives from West Laurens as a projected contributor, but the more immediate question is whether Mbadinga can turn a complementary role into the workload Arnold carried behind a line that already allowed 29 sacks.
Georgia Southern's top two producers, Dalen Cobb (57 catches, 506 yards) and Marcus Sanders Jr. (50 catches, 797 yards, 5 TD), are both gone, leaving Taylor Bradshaw's 16 catches as the only meaningful returning number at the position. Clay Helton went to the portal to answer that, landing Ashton Hollins from Illinois, who turned just 4 catches into 108 yards and a score, and Alex Taylor from North Carolina to pair with him. That group inherits a passing game that ranked 47th nationally in yards per game, and Hollins' big-play efficiency makes him the clearest bet to be the next explosive threat outside.
Ahmon Green's 16 catches walked out the door, and what remains at tight end for Georgia Southern is essentially unproven: River Helms has one career catch, JP Mikhael has two, and Henry Gregory, Aubrey Heath, Jackson Long and Elija Walton have no stats on file at all. Clay Helton is leaning on that blank slate plus a pair of three-star arrivals in JQ Crosby and Jack Berquist to give this passing attack, which ranked 47th nationally through the air, a fresh weapon underneath. With Green gone, the position projects as a run-blocking and situational role early rather than a target hub.
The 2025 line let up 29 sacks (99th nationally) even while the offense moved the ball at 5.86 yards per play, and Clay Helton rebuilt the room almost from scratch rather than patch it. Seven O-line departures wipe out most of the experience up front, so the 13 returning bodies, led by seniors Caelan Williams and Ty Furnish, will share the room with a five-man haul that includes junior college transfer Josh Raymond from Florida State and high school signees Jayvon Perry, Mo Clipper Jr., Grady Howell and Liam Thompson. With no depth chart to lean on, this is a true rebuild up front, and cutting the sack total matters more for 2026 than anything the run game (155 yards per game, 72nd) produced last fall.
This line produced 12 sacks and ranked 132nd nationally in that category last year, and the group's most disruptive piece, MJ Stroud (6.5 sacks, 15.5 TFL), is gone along with Jacob Ferguson's 6.5 TFL and Davion Rhodes' 34 tackles. Caleb Moore (2 sacks, 3.5 TFL) is the closest thing to a proven answer up front, but Georgia Southern went outside the program to find juice off the edge, landing Anthony Bynum from Middle Tennessee, who logged 63 tackles and 6 TFL there last season. With that much lost production and mostly unproven bodies filling in behind Moore, the pass rush looks like it stays a problem before it becomes a strength.
Brandon Tyson's 84 tackles are the one proven piece in a linebacker room that watched Brendan Harrington's 85 stops walk out the door, and the numbers behind him thin out fast, with CJ Allen Jr. at 16 tackles and everyone else in single digits. Georgia Southern didn't patch that with size or star power, instead bringing in Abilene Christian transfer Rashon Myles Jr. (18 tackles, 1 TFL) alongside three-star freshmen Kru Casey and Xavier Brown, a group that has to grow into snaps rather than fill them immediately. That inexperience lands on a defense that ranked 133rd in rushing yards allowed and 131st in yards per play, so until Myles or Allen forces more stops behind the line, opposing backs should keep finding room.
Georgia Southern's secondary gave up 240 passing yards a game, 108th nationally, and the leading returning tackler among defensive backs, Tracy Hill Jr., managed just 41 stops, hardly the resume of a unit that finished 134th in total defense. Justin Meyers (90 tackles) and Dorrian Smith (45 tackles, 6.5 TFL) are both gone, so Fabo Chaney and Devin Collier have to turn modest snap counts into real production rather than just occupying space. Four-star safety Chace Calicut and corner Dariyon Gordon arrive with no college stat line yet, betting on traits to fix what raw tackle numbers never did in 2025.
Tripp Bryant made 13 of 15 field goals with a 46-yard long last season, and his return means Georgia Southern does not need Arkansas transfer Blake Ford to win the job immediately, though his arrival gives Clay Helton a real competition at the position for the first time in years. Alex Smith is back after averaging 42.8 yards on 56 punts, giving the Eagles a settled leg at the position that matters most for field position. The bigger question is snap security, with Jackson Wheeler gone and Gavin Kurpis stepping in at long snapper.
Georgia Southern is replacing its entire passing offense, not just JC French IV, who threw for 2,924 yards. Camden Brown, Marcus Sanders Jr. and Dalen Cobb combined for well over 2,000 receiving yards out the door, and now Max Johnson, who managed just 437 yards at North Carolina, takes over at quarterback with a receiving corps rebuilt through Illinois transfer Ashton Hollins and Colorado's Kam Mikell, neither of whom produced much volume at their last stop. That is a lot of unproven pieces replacing proven production, and with a class ranked 89th providing little reinforcement, the offense looks like the shakiest unit on this roster heading into 2026.
JC French IV is gone after throwing for 2,924 yards and 20 touchdowns, and North Carolina transfer Max Johnson inherits that offense off just 437 yards and 2 scores of his own sample size. Georgia Southern's ceiling rides entirely on whether Johnson's efficient, clean-limited exposure translates to a full slate, with David Mbadinga's ground game and Taylor Bradshaw underneath there to lighten the load rather than bail him out.
Georgia Southern was a different team depending on the zip code in 2025, covering four straight as a home favorite and going 4-1-1 against the number at Paulson Stadium, but turning into a 2-4 underdog on the road. Clay Helton's crew also cashed at an 80% clip the week after a loss, a sign this group answered poor showings rather than spiraling. The 2026 line is simple: the home number is trustworthy, the road number is a fade until this team proves otherwise.
