Charles Kelly turned a roster ranked 111th in raw talent into nine wins and a 7-1 conference mark last fall, and with half the production gone, 2026 is the test of whether that coaching edge or the talent gap wins out.
Can Caden Creel carry an offense that returns barely half its production from a 9-5, 7-1 league season? With the ground game gutted and just 49.4 percent of offensive production back, Creel becomes the throw-first centerpiece of this attack rather than a complement to it, and his week-to-week command of a rebuilt supporting cast will decide whether Jacksonville State's conference standing holds. The most likely outcome is a more pass-heavy, Creel-driven identity, since he is the only established piece left for Charles Kelly to build around.
Jacksonville State's national ranking of 135 in schedule difficulty masks three genuine road tests that will decide whether Charles Kelly's second year matches the projected 7-5 mark: at Western Kentucky (35%), at Delaware (39%) and at Ohio (43%) all sit as toss-ups or worse. Everything else, including a manageable home slate against Middle Tennessee, Florida International and Sam Houston, sets up as winnable, which means the season really comes down to how many of those three true road coin flips the Gamecocks can steal. Split those and 7-5 looks about right, sweep them and the bowl math gets a lot more comfortable than 79% odds suggest.

Charles Kelly's 9-5 debut and a 7-1 run through conference play, capped by a win over Troy in the bowl game after a heartbreaking 15-19 loss to Kennesaw State in the Conference USA title game, look like a program on the rise, but the league-game yardage margin implied a considerably shakier team than the record shows, and an +11 turnover margin over 14 games is not the kind of edge that repeats. That gap matters more than the record itself heading into year two, since Kelly inherits just 49% returning production to prove last fall was substance and not just a hot streak in close games. A No. 101 power rating says the machines still see a middling roster, so 2026 becomes the real test of whether this staff can win on talent rather than turnovers.
Jacksonville State's identity was never the passing game, ranked 122nd, and it will not be in 2026 either, not with Caden Creel back after a 1514-yard, 9-touchdown season and a run game that finished 5th nationally in rushing yards per game. The formula worked well enough to produce a 9-5 mark and a +11 turnover margin, and Creel's return means Charles Kelly does not have to rebuild an offense that ranked 41st in total yards, just sharpen it. The bigger question is a defense that gave up 235 passing yards per game, 96th nationally, a soft spot opponents will target even as the run defense and havoc numbers held up.
Caden Creel returns as the established starter after throwing for 1514 yards with 9 touchdowns against 4 picks, and the numbers around him tell the real story: Jacksonville State ran for 248 yards per game, 5th nationally, while ranking 122nd in passing offense. Charles Kelly's offense doesn't need Creel to carry it through the air, it needs him to protect the ball and let the run game dictate. With Gavin Wimsatt gone and only unproven arms like Kadyn Mitchell and Jack Moran behind him, Creel's job in 2026 is efficiency, not volume, and this offense will go as far as its legs take it.
Cam Cook's 1,666 yards and 16 touchdowns walk out the door, and no returning back comes close to that workload, Khristian Lando managed just 201 yards and Andrew Paul 127 last season. That production gap lands on a ground game that ranked 5th nationally in rushing yards per game, so Jacksonville State needs Lando, Paul or one of the lightly-used names like Justus Savage and Jalen Likely to grow into real carries rather than a committee. Three-star arrivals Cedric Kouemi, Maurice Winston and Landon Watkins add fresh legs, but replacing that kind of volume by committee is a real downgrade risk for an offense already leaning on the run to cover for a passing attack ranked 122nd nationally.
Jacksonville State ran the ball 248 yards a game a year ago because the passing attack, 122nd nationally, gave defenses nothing to fear outside Deondre Johnson's 724 yards. Charles Kelly went to the portal to fix that, landing Murray State's Darius Cannon (76 catches, 726 yards) and Missouri State's Ronnel Johnson (35 catches, 463 yards) to pair with Deondre Johnson and give this offense a real three-man rotation instead of one featured target and drop-off. Brock Rechsteiner's five touchdowns and Caleb Coombs' 37 catches are gone, but if Cannon slides into that vertical role, the ground game finally gets a passing lane to keep defenses honest.
Pearson Baldwin's 26 catches for 302 yards walk out the door, and nobody left in the room has caught more than one pass. Shane Payton Hodges brings some rushing snaps and David Alpers III has that single grab, but this group's real job in 2026 is springing the run game that already ranked 5th nationally in rushing, not replacing a receiving threat that isn't walking back in. With passing offense stuck at 122nd, Jacksonville State's tight ends earn their keep blocking, not catching.
That 248 rushing yards per game (5th nationally) masked a group that just lost seven of its pieces, including Cameron Griffin, KD Small and Jaedon Hill. Charles Kelly rebuilds around the returns of Cam Stancil, Storm Fain and J.R. Jernigan while plugging in three-star transfers Caleb Holmes and Hadine Diaby up front, plus Amarii Atchison at tackle from Mercer. With 23 sacks allowed and a passing game stuck at 162 yards per game (122nd), the ground game has to keep carrying this offense in 2026 while the new faces find their footing.
Jacksonville State loses its two most disruptive linemen in Emmanuel Oyebadejo and Gharin Stansbury, who combined for the bulk of last year's pressure off the edge, and replaces that production with three-star freshmen Tristan Lyles, Jermaine Waters Jr. and Austin Bouck plus transfer Marvin Stringfellow, none of whom have logged a college snap. Khurtiss Perry (2 sacks, 4.5 TFL) and Jawaun Campbell (21 tackles) return as the interior anchors, but last season's group already ranked just 55th in sacks nationally, so the drop-off in proven edge rushers is a real problem for a defense that finished 96th in passing yards allowed. Jumarion Larry gives Charles Kelly an unproven but athletic option to pair with the newcomers, and how quickly that trio of freshmen and Stringfellow develop will decide whether the pass rush holds steady or slips further.
Mac Sanders and Walker O'Steen form the core of this group, combining for 83 and 78 tackles with 11.5 and 6 TFL a year ago, and both are back to anchor a defense that finished 47th in tackles for loss and 40th in havoc rate. The bigger question is depth behind them, since Thaxton Gallagher and Isaac Walker are both gone, taking real snaps off the field, and the four incoming freshmen, Brayden Matthews, Devin Pettway, Jameson McCollough and Mario Alloway, arrive without any prior stats to lean on. That leaves Myles Butler, Jacob Cruz, Aidan Thompson and Mikey Rosa to prove they can hold up in the rotation, with the pass defense, 96th in yards allowed per game, the spot most exposed if they cannot.
Jacksonville State's back end returns its full core, with Caleb Nix (63 tackles, 4 TFL) and Tre'Quon Fegans (36 tackles, 1.5 TFL) anchoring a group that gave up 235 passing yards per game, 96th nationally, last fall. The losses here are thin, mainly Tyrin Taylor's 31 tackles, so the ceiling question is whether Jaheim Jenkins and Marc Woods can turn coverage snaps into more disruption rather than just more reps. Clemson transfer Rob Billings IV joins a four-man defensive back signing class as depth and competition, but 2026 is built on the returning corners and safeties tightening a pass defense that lagged well behind its 47th-ranked tackles-for-loss production up front.
Garrison Rippa is the rare returning piece Jacksonville State doesn't have to worry about, coming back off a 21 of 28 season with a 52-yard long that already covers most of the field. The bigger question is who punts, since Cade Backe and his 40.3 average are gone and the job falls to some combination of Conor Donaghy and Carter Lewis, neither of whom has a punt on record. That's a real turnover at one specialist spot behind a proven leg at the other, and it means Rippa's consistency matters even more if the new punter needs time to find his footing.
Cam Cook's 1,666 rushing yards walk out the door along with Gavin Wimsatt, but the offense still belongs to Caden Creel, who threw for 1,514 yards and 9 touchdowns last fall and now gets two portal receivers to replace Brock Rechsteiner and Caleb Coombs. Darius Cannon arrives from Murray State off a 76-catch, 726-yard season and Ronnel Johnson adds 463 more from Missouri State, giving Creel an immediate, proven target duo rather than a rebuild from scratch. The bigger question sits up front on defense, where Talan Carter's 55 tackles and 1.5 sacks are gone and a stack of unproven portal linemen, Marquis Hood, Andrew Rumph, Marvin Stringfellow and Nii Addy, have to replace that production with almost no track record between them.
Cam Cook's 1666 rushing yards leave a hole no returner replaces, which shifts the burden onto Caden Creel to throw more, and that means the arrival of Darius Cannon from Murray State matters more than any other addition on this roster. He caught 76 balls for 726 yards there, and if he replicates that kind of workload alongside Deondre Johnson, Jacksonville State stays a conference-title contender even with the ground game diminished. If Cannon needs time to sync with Creel, the offense leans on an unproven run game and the margin for error in Conference USA shrinks fast.
Jacksonville State's betting market splits hard along geography heading into 2026. At home, bettors cashed at a 67% clip as the Gamecocks went 5-1 straight up, but that trust evaporated on the road, where Charles Kelly's team covered just 33% of the time despite going 2-4 straight up away from Jacksonville. The conference slate is where the real value showed, a 63% cover rate against Conference USA foes, and that in-league form matters more than ever with Kelly now in year two and the road numbers still lagging.
