Just one-fifth of last year's production returns for Scott Satterfield's fourth Cincinnati team, so a roster ranked 73rd for talent has to punch above that number immediately or the 46th-ranked power rating looks generous.
Can JC French IV run this offense with almost no help around him? With only 7.3% offensive production returning, French inherits not just Brendan Sorsby's old job but a supporting cast that is essentially starting from zero, and a Georgia Southern transfer with no prior college stats is a steep bet to smooth that over. The likelier path is a rough early stretch as French and his new pieces sort out timing, with the offense trailing the defense's 32.8% continuity for most of 2026.
Cincinnati's projected 6-6 mark rides on three true toss-up-or-worse tests: Texas Tech at home (21%), a trip to BYU (24%) and a trip to Arizona (37%) are the games that will actually decide whether Scott Satterfield's fourth year clears bowl territory. Everything else on the slate skews in the Bearcats' favor, including a manageable stretch against Kansas State (55%), West Virginia (54%) and Iowa State (57%), so those three road-heavy gut checks are the difference between a middling season and a real step forward. Split even one of Texas Tech, BYU or Arizona and the 71% bowl odds look conservative.

Cincinnati's 7-6 mark and 5-4 conference finish flattered a team that needed just 13.4 yards per point on offense against a league median of 14.1, an efficiency mark that rarely holds up two years running. Add in a league win rate of 55.6% against conference foes that only projects to 51.0% based on the actual yardage margin, and Scott Satterfield's fourth year looks built on results that outran the process. The one component pointing the other way is a -4 turnover margin over 13 games, which should trend better in 2026, but that alone will not offset an offense due to get less efficient.
Cincinnati's offense was legitimately elite by the underlying numbers last year, 8th nationally in yards per play and 11th in points per scoring chance, which makes the quarterback change the whole story for 2026. JC French IV, arriving from Georgia Southern with no prior stats on file, inherits a run game averaging 177 yards and an offensive line that allowed just 8 sacks, about as soft a landing as a new starter gets. The bigger problem sits on the other side of the ball, where a defense ranked 128th in havoc rate and 124th in run-stuff rate let opponents stay on schedule too often, and no quarterback change fixes that.
Brendan Sorsby's 2,786 yards and 26 touchdowns walk out the door, and Cincinnati hands the offense to JC French IV, in from Georgia Scott Satterfield inherits a line that allowed just 8 sacks and a scheme that ranked 8th nationally in yards per play, so the infrastructure around him is elite even if his own passing numbers are unproven. Pennsylvania transfer Liam O'Brien, who threw for 2,376 yards and 19 scores, gives Satterfield a credible fallback, but the job is French's to build on a 30.3 points-per-game attack that already knows how to move the ball.
Cincinnati lost its top four rushers from a run game that hit 177 yards per game, including Tawee Walker (709 yards) and Evan Pryor (522 yards), and answered by importing almost the entire depth chart. Zylan Perry arrives from Louisiana with 689 yards and 8 touchdowns and profiles as the new early-down answer, with Cole Tabb (445 yards at Stanford) and Notre Dame transfer Gi'Bran Payne adding proven touches behind him. Zion Johnson is the lone returning back with any production to speak of, which makes this backfield a portal-built unit trying to keep an offense that ran at 6.94 yards per play, 8th nationally, from stalling out.
Cincinnati's leading returning wideouts combined for 32 catches last season, so the receiving room is essentially getting reconstructed around three transfers. Larenzo Fenner arrives from South Dakota off a 41-catch, 15-touchdown year, Malachi Henry brings 69 grabs from Central Arkansas, and Cade Wolford adds another proven target from Kent State after his 509-yard season at Kent State, together replacing the production Cyrus Allen and Jeff Caldwell take with them. That's a lot of new hands catching passes for an offense that already ranked 8th nationally in yards per play, and if Fenner and Henry translate their smaller-school numbers to the Big 12, Cincinnati's passing game has more juice than its 62nd-ranked passing yardage figure suggests.
Joe Royer's 29 catches and 416 yards walk out the door with him, and nobody left in the room has caught more than four passes in a season, Gavin Grover included. That production gap lands on a passing attack that already ranked just 62nd nationally, meaning Cincinnati's efficient, run-heavy offense will lean harder on Grover and three-star signees Jalen Williams and Gavin Gregory to eventually round into blockers and safety valves rather than replace Royer's numbers outright. This is a group built to be functional in year one, not a strength Scott Satterfield's offense can feature.
Eight sacks allowed all of 2025, second nationally, is the standard this group has to hold, and the personnel says it should. Only three linemen are gone, and seniors Joe Cotton, Judea Milon and Taran Tyo return alongside juniors Evan Tengesdahl and Grant Edgington to anchor a unit that helped Cincinnati rank 8th nationally in yards per play. Scott Satterfield adds three-star signees Austin Hoane, Luke Collins, Solomon Mathis, Luke Grover and Nathan Zappitelli as depth pieces, but the path to fixing a 38.7% third-down rate runs through the veterans already in the room.
Cincinnati's front lost its two most disruptive pieces in Jalen Hunt (3.5 sacks, 6 TFL) and Isaiah Rogers (1 sack, 1 TFL), leaving a group that already ranked 116th in tackles for loss and 128th in havoc rate searching for juice. Marquaze Parker (1.5 sacks, 3 TFL) is the lone returning proven producer, so the Bearcats went to the portal for Chidera Otutu, who posted 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks at UTSA, to anchor the interior immediately. Four-star signee Lance Dawson gives the room a long-term building block, but with a run defense that allowed 179 yards per game on the ground, Otutu and Parker have to hold up now, not in 2027.
Jake Golday's 95 tackles and Jack Dingle's 51 walk out the door, leaving Jonathan Thompson (67 tackles, 8.5 TFL) as the only proven every-down piece in a room that finished 116th in tackles for loss and 128th in havoc rate a year ago. Cincinnati didn't chase a big name to fix that, instead loading up on volume: Filip Maciorowski arrives from Northern Illinois with 76 tackles and 2.5 sacks of his own production, while Patrick Bauer and Damaine Wilson add modest but real tackle totals from Illinois State and Georgia State. This is a rebuild through reps rather than star power, and whether Thompson and Maciorowski can turn that group's finishing ability into more TFLs will decide if this defense stops bleeding rushing yards at 179 per game.
Cincinnati is replacing four of five departed defensive backs with transfers rather than internal candidates, a telling response to a unit that ranked 124th in run-stuff rate and 128th in havoc a year ago. Jasper Beeler (74 tackles at Northern Illinois) and Jacob Finley (57 tackles, same program) arrive as the presumptive answers at safety and corner, pairing with holdover thumper Antwan Peek Jr. to reset the tackling profile after Trevon Gola-Callard's 67 stops walked out the door. The bet here is volume production over continuity, Satterfield imported proven tacklers instead of banking on Daniel James or CJ Jones to absorb bigger roles, and that gamble will decide whether the rush defense climbs out of the bottom third of the country.
Stephen Rusnak returns off a 13 of 17 season with a long of 46, giving Cincinnati its steadiest specialist heading into 2026, and Max Fletcher's 45.4-yard average on 41 punts means the Bearcats are not scrambling at either specialist spot. The long-snapper job is the one open competition, with incoming Kenny Baker out of Cincinnati Elder pushing Eli Stein after Weston Simmons departed the program. With Rusnak and Fletcher both back, Scott Satterfield's operation is built on continuity rather than replacement.
Brendan Sorsby's 2786 yards and 26 touchdowns walk out the door, and Cincinnati hands the keys to JC French IV, a Georgia Southern transfer with no prior stats to lean on. The receiving corps got a near-total makeover too, with Cyrus Allen's 660 yards gone and Larenzo Fenner, Malachi Henry and Cade Wolford all arriving to replace him, while Zylan Perry and Cole Tabb take over a backfield that lost both Tawee Walker and Evan Pryor. With 22 transfers in and 23 out, this offense will run through the newcomers immediately, not gradually.
Cincinnati handed the offense to JC French IV, a Georgia Southern transfer with no prior college stats, tasked with replacing Brendan Sorsby's 2786 yards and 26 touchdowns. French inherits real weapons in Cade Wolford, who brings a 509-yard, 7-touchdown season from Kent State, and Louisiana transfer Zylan Perry off his own 689-yard, 8-touchdown year, but none of it matters if an unproven passer cannot run the show from day one.
The number that jumps off this card is 0-5 against the spread the week after a loss, a pattern bettors should know before backing Scott Satterfield's team off any defeat. Home favorite spots have been a fair coin flip at 3-3, and the road underdog record of 1-2 shows little value chasing Cincinnati as a live dog away from home. Against ranked competition the Bearcats have covered just once in four tries, so anyone pricing this program as a spread threat against the Big 12's upper tier is fighting the recent evidence.
