John Mateer returns behind a defense that allowed just 15.5 points per game, and with the nation's No. 14 roster talent Brent Venables has the pieces to finally push an offense that finished 79th in scoring into line with a top-12 power rating.
Can Brent Venables replace the half of his defense that walked out the door? Only 55.1% of the production returns from a unit that carried Oklahoma into the SEC race, and that kind of turnover on that side of the ball is the real swing factor for 2026. History favors Venables here, a defense-first coach whose scheme has consistently plugged in new pieces without collapsing, so the drop-off should be manageable rather than fatal.
Oklahoma's toughest stretch nationally sets the ceiling here, and none of it comes easy: a trip to Georgia, a neutral-site date with Texas and a road trip to Michigan all sit as true coin flips or worse. Brent Venables gets Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M at home, but this schedule ranks third-toughest for a reason, and going 1-2 or 2-1 through that Georgia-Texas-Michigan gauntlet is what separates an eight-win season from something that feels flat. The should-win games against UTEP, New Mexico and Kentucky are there to bank wins, not to define the year.

Ten wins and a playoff berth dressed up a team that lived dangerously, Oklahoma went 4-0 in one-score games and finished conference play winning at a rate well above what its yardage margin against league opponents actually supported. The offense also scored efficiently, needing just 13.5 yards per point against a 14.1 league median, exactly the kind of edge that tends to vanish rather than repeat. None of that is a knock on Brent Venables in year five, a No. 12 power rating and 6-2 mark in league play are real, but 2026 is the year the ledger evens out and the record likely stops flattering the roster underneath it.
Oklahoma won 10 games in 2025 on the back of a defense that ranked 3rd in sacks, 2nd in tackles for loss and 3rd in havoc rate, while the offense finished 103rd in success rate and 107th in sacks allowed. That gap is the whole story for 2026, and it now runs through John Mateer, the returning quarterback who inherits an offense that managed just 119 rushing yards per game and 5.33 yards per play a year ago. Mateer does not need to be spectacular, he needs to keep the line clean enough for a defense this disruptive to close out games instead of bailing out a stalled attack.
John Mateer's move to Norman is the real headline of Oklahoma's 2026 offense, not the punt he's oddly credited with. His numbers are unproven in this offense, but he inherits a passing game that ranked 59th nationally while the ground attack sat 113th, so the Sooners need him to carry the load through the air rather than lean on the run. Michael Hawkins Jr. is gone after flashing efficiency in limited snaps, and behind Mateer sit Whitt Newbauer, Jett Niu and four-star Celina product Bowe Bentley, none with meaningful game experience, which makes Mateer's health and week-to-week command of an offense that finished 103rd in success rate the swing factor for how far this team goes.
Oklahoma's ground game was the drag on a 113th-ranked rushing attack in 2025, and the answer wasn't wholesale change but better health up front for Xavier Robinson (421 yards, 4 TD) and Tory Blaylock (482 yards, 4 TD), who both return as the clear one-two punch. Jaydn Ott and Jovantae Barnes are both gone, leaving Colorado State transfer Lloyd Avant, who ran for 417 yards and 5 touchdowns last season, to push straight into the rotation rather than sit as a project. With Robinson and Blaylock already showing they can produce behind a line that allowed 30 sacks, the bet here is that better blocking, not a new headline name, is what turns 119 rushing yards per game into a functional complement to the passing attack.
Oklahoma didn't just re-sign Isaiah Sategna III off a 65-catch, 949-yard season, it went to the portal for reinforcements rather than lean on an unproven group behind him. Trell Harris arrives from Virginia with 847 yards of his own, and Parker Livingstone brings 516 yards and 6 touchdowns from Texas, instantly giving Oklahoma a three-man set that dwarfs what Jer'Michael Carter and Jacob Jordan showed in limited 2025 snaps. The departures (Jayden Gibson, Major Melson, KJ Daniels) barely register on the stat sheet, so this receiver room is now built almost entirely on what Sategna already proved and what Harris and Livingstone proved somewhere else, a real answer for an offense that ranked 98th in yards per play.
Oklahoma rebuilt this room almost entirely through the portal rather than banking on its returning trio of John Locke Jr., Kade McIntyre and Trynae Washington, none of whom have logged a catch. Rocky Beers arrives from Colorado State with 31 catches for 388 yards and 7 touchdowns, and Hayden Hansen joins from Florida after a 30-catch, 254-yard season, giving Brent Venables two proven pass-catching tight ends to plug into an offense that ranked 103rd in success rate and 113th in rushing yards per game a year ago. Jaren Kanak's departure strips out 44 catches and 533 yards, but Beers and Hansen combined already outproduce that number in receptions, and if either becomes a consistent third-down target it directly attacks the unit's 84th-ranked third down rate.
Thirty sacks allowed and a 39.7% success rate marked a line that never controlled games up front, and with eight linemen out the door, Brent Venables rebuilt the room rather than patch it. Michael Fasusi and Daniel Akinkunmi anchor the returning group, but the fixes came from outside: four-star tackle E'Marion Harris arrives from Arkansas, four-star Deacon Schmitt joins as a true freshman, and Caleb Nitta transfers in from Western Kentucky to compete inside. That much turnover on the interior means the rushing attack that managed just 119 yards per game has to find rhythm with largely new parts, not the same faces that struggled in 2025.
Oklahoma's line was the engine of one of the country's stingiest run defenses, and Taylor Wein (7 sacks, 15 TFL) and David Stone (43 tackles, 8 TFL) are both back to anchor it again. The bigger loss is R Mason Thomas, whose 6.5 sacks and 9.5 TFL off the edge need replacing, and that job falls to a loaded newcomer group headlined by four-star Jake Kreul and Matthew Nelson plus juco addition Bishop Thomas, who already produced 48 tackles at Georgia State. With Wein, Stone and Jayden Jackson holding down the interior, the pass rush production walking out the door is the only real dent in a front that finished top-5 nationally in sacks and tackles for loss.
Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke anchor this group, combining for real production a year ago (76 tackles and 4 sacks for Lewis, 74 tackles and 3 sacks for Heinecke), and that continuity matters given Oklahoma ranked 2nd nationally in tackles for loss and 3rd in havoc rate behind this front seven. The losses of Kendal Daniels and Sammy Omosigho strip out combined disruption up front, but Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan, who posted 44 tackles and 2 sacks last season, gives Brent Venables an experienced body to plug in immediately rather than leaning solely on unproven names like Taylor Heim and James Nesta. With the run defense already elite at 3rd nationally in rushing yards allowed, the swing factor for 2026 is whether Sullivan and the returning duo can keep that same havoc rate without Daniels and Omosigho on the field.
Robert Spears-Jennings is gone, but the back end returns its most active pieces in Peyton Bowen and Courtland Guillory, who combined for 87 tackles a year ago behind a front that generated 45 sacks and finished 2nd nationally in tackles for loss. That pressure masked a secondary that ranked just 32nd in passing yards allowed, and Oklahoma answered by adding corners Derrick Johnson II and Dakoda Fields plus safety Markel Ford to a room that already has Michael Boganowski and Reggie Powers III flashing as disruptors with 2.5 TFL apiece. The bet is that Brent Venables plugs newcomers into coverage while Bowen and Guillory anchor tackling, tightening the one real crack in an otherwise elite defense.
Tate Sandell is the rare special teams piece who is already a proven weapon, not a question mark, hitting 24 of 27 field goals with a long of 55 and stacking 107 points in 2025. The bigger swing factor is the net punting job, where Grayson Miller returns off a 45.8 average across 59 punts and gives Oklahoma a legitimate weapon to flip field position rather than just survive it. With three-star signee Trace Rudd arriving as a developmental piece and Austin Welch's shaky 0-for-1 kicking now off the books, this unit's ceiling in 2026 rests entirely on Sandell staying automatic and Miller keeping opponents pinned deep.
Oklahoma gutted its receiving corps, sending Deion Burks, Jaren Kanak, Keontez Lewis and JaVonnie Gibson out the door, then went to the portal for Trell Harris (59 catches, 847 yards, 5 TD at Virginia) and Parker Livingstone (29 catches, 516 yards, 6 TD at Texas) to hand John Mateer new targets. The defensive losses cut deeper than the arrivals replace: Kendal Daniels, Sammy Omosigho and Robert Spears-Jennings combined for real production up front and on the back end, and Cole Sullivan and Bishop Thomas arrive without matching those numbers yet. With 29 outbound transfers against 16 in, this is Mateer's offense to run through Harris and Livingstone, while the front seven leans on newcomers still proving they belong in the SEC.
Deion Burks is gone, and Trell Harris, who caught 59 passes for 847 yards and 5 touchdowns at Virginia, is the direct replacement John Mateer needs opposite Isaiah Sategna III. If Harris produces at that same clip in the SEC, Mateer has two legitimate outside targets to work with instead of leaning on Sategna alone, and this passing game keeps pace with what it lost.
Oklahoma went a perfect 4-0 straight up and against the spread away from Norman, including a clean 2-0 cover mark as a road underdog, while home crowds got nothing but stress: a 3-5 cover mark as a favorite at Owen Field. Brent Venables' club backed that up against ranked competition, covering 5-3 with a matching 5-3 straight-up mark, proof this group shows up when the name on the jersey across the field carries weight. The gap between a bulletproof road team and a shaky home favorite is the number that should shape how anyone prices Oklahoma games in 2026.
