Fran Brown's roster carries the 34th-ranked talent base in the country, which makes a defense allowing 34.9 points per game and a 3-9 finish look less like a rebuild and more like a coaching staff that has to get more out of what it already has.
Can Steve Angeli operate behind a rebuilt supporting cast with only 31.7% offensive production returning around him? Angeli has thrown before, but the receivers and backs who catch and carry his throws are almost entirely new faces, so his early accuracy will matter less than how fast that skill group learns the offense. The more likely outcome is a slow start followed by growth, since Angeli is the steadying piece even as everything around him resets.
Fran Brown's third year comes wrapped around three near-toss-up-or-worse dates that will decide whether Syracuse claws back to bowl eligibility: a home date with Notre Dame that projects as a near-lock loss, Clemson visiting the Dome as a coin flip gone wrong, and a road trip to Virginia that sits in the same coin-flip territory. Sandwiched around those are enough winnable spots, UConn on the road, Boston College, a home slate against California, to get to the 5-7 range the projections show, but the margin for error against the Notre Dame-Clemson-Virginia stretch is thin. Everything else on the board, from New Hampshire at home to trips to Pittsburgh and NC State, is what determines whether this program stays on the right side of six wins rather than what defines it.

A 3-9 finish with a 1-7 mark in ACC play is a jarring drop for a program that looked like it had turned a corner under Fran Brown, and it leaves little margin for another slow start in league games. The power rating still slots Syracuse around the middle of the country, a sign the roster and results did not line up in 2025. Year 3 is about closing that gap between how the team rates and how it actually finishes conference games.
Every number on this card explains the 3-9 finish, and none of it was a fluke: Syracuse ranked 123rd in points per scoring opportunity while the defense gave up 34.9 points a game (131st) and the offensive line allowed 34 sacks. A minus-14 turnover margin, 135th nationally, is the kind of number that sinks seasons on its own, and it came from an offense that already couldn't stay on schedule at a 37.7% success rate. Steve Angeli returns as the settled starting quarterback for 2026, but he's inheriting a unit that finished 126th in yards per play allowed and 130th in yards per play allowed on defense, so the fix has to start with simply not giving games away.
Steve Angeli inherits a passing offense that finished 80th nationally in yards but couldn't finish drives, ranking 123rd in points per scoring opportunity behind a line that allowed 34 sacks. Rickie Collins' turnover-prone tenure (10 INT) is gone, and Angeli's competition arrives almost entirely from the portal, with Kennesaw State's Amari Odom (2,594 yards, 19 TD) the most proven arm in the room if Syracuse needs a change of plans. The real swing factor is protection and scheme discipline, not the quarterback battle, since Fran Brown's offense ranked 117th in success rate a year ago and Angeli can only be as good as the pocket and third-down execution around him.
Syracuse is rebuilding this room almost entirely through the portal, and it had to be, since returning backs Tylik Hill (129 yards), Davion Kerr (13 receiving yards) and Malachi Coleman (31 yards) combined for zero rushing touchdowns behind a line that allowed 34 sacks. Ahmad Miller arrives from Jackson State off a 1035-yard, 5-touchdown season and projects as the clear lead back, with Ju'Juan Johnson (155 yards, 2 TD at LSU) adding a proven complement. That's a real upgrade in production over departed starter Will Nixon's 432 yards, but a run game that ranked 109th in rushing yards per game and 123rd in points per scoring opportunity needs Miller to do more than just replace what left.
Syracuse just lost its entire proven receiving corps, with Johntay Cook (47 catches, 559 yards, 2 TD) and Darrell Gill Jr. (32 catches, 506 yards, 5 TD) both gone, leaving Darien Williams (9 catches, 112 yards, 1 TD) as the only wideout on the roster who caught more than 10 passes a year ago. Fran Brown answered by importing production rather than hoping for it, and Cole Weaver arrives from Miami (OH) having caught 45 passes for 642 yards, instantly the most proven target in the room. A passing attack that ranked 80th in yards per game now leans on Weaver and four-star Calvin Russell III to replace the size and touchdown production that walked out the door.
Dan Villari's 39 catches walk out the door with him, and none of Syracuse's returning tight ends, Daunte Bacheyie's 5 grabs included, sniffed that kind of workload in 2025. Noah Meyers arrives from Western Kentucky off a 32-catch, 357-yard season and projects as the immediate answer at the position, a straight upgrade in production over anyone left on the roster. For an offense that ranked 117th in success rate and struggled to finish drives, a proven pass-catching tight end like Meyers gives Fran Brown's staff a security blanket the room lacked a year ago.
Syracuse allowed 34 sacks and posted just 4.85 yards per play last season, numbers that made the line the drag on Fran Brown's offense rather than any single skill spot. Most of the room actually comes back, led by seniors Joe Cruz and Zach Rice, but seven linemen departed, including Da'Metrius Weatherspoon, Patrick Alberga and TJ Ferguson, so Brown is not just running it back. The fixes are on the recruiting trail rather than the portal this time, with high school signees Javeion Cooper and Joseph White brought in at tackle and Oluwafunto Akinshilo, Brayden Charney and Shemaj Henry added up front, a young infusion that will need time before it moves a group that ranked 117th in success rate.
Syracuse basically rebuilt this line through the portal rather than trust what was already in the room, and the numbers explain why: a unit that finished 130th in yards per play allowed and mustered just 19 sacks lost its top three producers in Kevin Jobity Jr., Denis Jaquez Jr. and David Reese. Tunmise Adeleye arrives from UNLV with 48 tackles and 7.5 TFL, and Jartavius Flounoy adds 22 tackles and 6 TFL from Georgia State, giving Fran Brown two proven disruptors to plug in immediately rather than waiting on unproven returners like Isaiah Hastings and Rashard Perry. The bet is that transfer production translates faster than internal development did, because last year's front never got off blocks and this version needs Adeleye and Flounoy generating pressure from day one.
Syracuse rebuilds its linebacker room around continuity rather than a marquee addition, with Gary Bryant III (53 tackles, 4.5 TFL) and Antoine Deslauriers (48 tackles) back after a defense that bled 253 passing yards a game and finished 130th in yards allowed per play. Toledo transfer Chris D'Appolonia arrives with 59 tackles of production to offset the loss of Anwar Sparrow, while David Omopariola's 8 tackles for loss give this group real disruption in a scheme that already ranks 42nd in stuffing runs at the line. The pieces for a sturdier front are here, but until this unit turns that run-stopping ability into more sacks than last year's 19, the pass defense stays the bigger problem than the linebackers themselves.
Syracuse gave up 253 passing yards per game a year ago, 122nd nationally, and answered by keeping its tackle leaders in Braheem Long Jr. and Chris Peal while adding bodies rather than banking on one savior. Nazir Ward and Jai Eugene Jr. both arrive from Western Kentucky with real production, 35 tackles and 21 tackles respectively, to plug the gaps left by departed starters Devin Grant and Duce Chestnut. Tedarius Hughes signed out of Miami Northwestern as a four-star prospect, but the bigger swing factor is whether Demetres Samuel Jr. and Cornell Perry, each with 37 tackles, can turn a defense that ranked 130th in yards per play allowed into one that actually gets off the field on third down.
Tripp Woody is the one certainty here, coming off a 12 of 14 season on field goals with a 49-yard long and 58 points, and he anchors a specialist corps that otherwise turned over completely. Jack Stonehouse and his 46.5-yard average are gone, leaving Mateja Pavlovich to handle punting duties without a single logged snap on file, while Jimmy Gregg arrives from University as insurance at the same spot. Fran Brown Jr. takes over long snapping duties too, so Woody's leg is the only proven piece in a group that is otherwise a clean slate.
Syracuse ripped out nearly its entire skill-position group after a 3-9 collapse, sending Rickie Collins, Johntay Cook, Darrell Gill Jr. and Justus Ross-Simmons out the door along with both lead backs, Will Nixon and Yasin Willis. Steve Angeli is the projected starter under center, and Fran Brown restocked around him by raiding the portal for Ahmad Miller (1035 yards, 5 TD at Jackson State) and Cole Weaver (45 catches, 642 yards at Miami OH), plus pass rusher Tunmise Adeleye (6 sacks, 7.5 TFL at UNLV) to prop up the defense. With 29 outgoing transfers against a middling recruiting class ranked 35th, 2026 hinges less on returning continuity than on how fast Brown's portal imports gel in Year 3.
Syracuse's 2026 season rides on Steve Angeli fixing what Rickie Collins broke, a passing game that threw 10 interceptions against just 6 touchdowns and buried a 3-9 team. Angeli inherits the job outright, but the Orange also brought in Amari Odom from Kennesaw State, a passer who put up 19 touchdowns against 8 picks there, meaning Angeli has to prove that ratio translates or the competition gets real. Clean up the giveaways and this offense stops beating itself; repeat last year's turnover rate and no defensive returner, not Gary Bryant III or Braheem Long Jr., can bail it out enough to matter.
The number that should worry Fran Brown's program more than the 3-9 mark itself is what happened at the Dome, where Syracuse covered just once in six tries and won straight up only twice. The road version of this team was live, going 3-2 against the spread as an underdog away from home, but that split identity, competitive on the road and broken at home, is exactly the gap a rebuild in year three needs to close. Bettors have caught on to the pattern too, hammering Syracuse after losses to the tune of a 2-6 cover mark, a sign the market expects the same team that showed up too often in 2025 rather than the growth the roster is supposedly building toward.
