Josh Heupel keeps the No. 16 recruiting foundation intact even as the scoreboard identity flips, betting that a defense allowing 28.8 points a game finally catches up to the 39.8-point offense before George MacIntyre's inexperience drags the whole operation back to the pack.
Can George MacIntyre hold up as a full-season starter with only 36.3% of the offense's production back around him? The lack of returning weapons and Aguilar's departure mean MacIntyre will be learning on the job with a largely rebuilt supporting cast, and that inexperience across the board points to an uneven first half before the offense finds its footing. Tennessee's floor in 2026 gets set by how fast that group jells around him, not by what he showed in his limited career snaps.
Tennessee's season turns on a three-game gauntlet that decides everything: Texas at home as a 28% underdog, a trip to Texas A&M at 32%, and Alabama coming to Knoxville at 44%. Ranked 13th in schedule difficulty, this slate offers little cushion around those tests, though home dates with Auburn (64%) and Kentucky (78%) plus a trip to Vanderbilt (59%) provide realistic paths to bowl eligibility. Split those three toss-up-or-worse games even, and the 7-5 projection undersells what Josh Heupel's group could do in year six.

Tennessee's 4-4 mark in league play badly undersold what the yardage margin against those same opponents said about this team, and that gap points toward a better 2026 than last year's record alone would predict. The offense also ran efficiently at 11.8 yards per point scored, but a plus-5 turnover margin and a 2-3 finish in one-score games were the shakier props holding up an 8-5 finish, and neither is likely to repeat. Josh Heupel enters year six off a winning season and a top-16 power rating, with the more sustainable path being a team that plays closer to its underlying numbers than its final record showed.
The gap that defines Tennessee's 2026 outlook is the one between a top-ten offense and a defense that gave up 397 yards a game, ranking 92nd nationally in yards allowed and 114th against the pass. George MacIntyre is projected to take over an attack that scored 39.8 points a game and ranked 5th nationally in offensive success rate, inheriting the passing infrastructure that produced 293 yards a game through the air even with just 69 yards, no touchdowns and no picks to his own name so far. If MacIntyre can keep that machine humming, Tennessee's ceiling still runs through whether the defense's 35 sacks and 86 tackles for loss can offset a unit that let opponents stay on schedule 44.5% of the time.
Joey Aguilar's 3,565 yards walk out the door with him, and Tennessee replaces that production with almost no proven passing behind it. George MacIntyre, who threw for just 69 yards last season, is the front-runner taking first-team reps this camp, but the job is not locked down. Five-star signee Faizon Brandon headlines the incoming class as a true high school recruit with no college snaps yet, while Colorado transfer Ryan Staub (426 yards, 3 TD, 4 INT) gives Josh Heupel a veteran arm to push MacIntyre. Whoever wins the room inherits an offense that ranked 6th nationally in points per game and 5th in success rate, so the passing attack does not need to be reinvented, just piloted.
DeSean Bishop is the story here, not the departures. His 1076 yards and 16 touchdowns dwarf what Star Thomas and Peyton Lewis took with them, and with Bishop back as the clear workhorse, Tennessee loses volume but not its best back. Tulane transfer Javin Gordon, who ran for 516 yards and 5 scores, gives Josh Heupel a proven change-of-pace option rather than a project, while Daune Morris provides depth behind Bishop in an offense that already ranks 6th nationally in scoring but only 47th on the ground. The passing game carries this attack, so Bishop's efficiency matters more than the run game's national standing.
Chris Brazzell II and his 1,017 yards are gone, but Tennessee replaces that production with a five-star headliner rather than hope, landing TK Keys out of Hattiesburg alongside four-star Tyreek King from Knoxville Catholic. Braylon Staley (68-837-6) and Mike Matthews (53-813-4) already form a proven top two in an offense that ranked 6th nationally in passing yards per game, so the incoming class is additive firepower rather than a rebuild. The bigger swing factor is explosiveness, which sat at just 51st a year ago, and Keys and King give Josh Heupel the vertical juice to turn that efficient passing attack into a bigger-play one.
Ethan Davis (21 catches, 257 yards) is the clear holdover after Miles Kitselman's departure emptied out the position's top production, and the room around him is now built almost entirely from outside additions. Drake Martinez arrives from UT Martin having already caught 18 balls for 124 yards, giving Josh Heupel a ready-made complement to Davis rather than a project, while Luca Wolf and Trent Thomas add depth without proven college numbers. For an offense that ranked 6th nationally in points per game but leaned on the pass (6th in passing yards) far more than the run (47th), Davis and Martinez matter as much for how they hold up in protection and the quick-game as for catches.
Tennessee's line only allowed the offense to hit 47th in rushing yards per game and 51st in explosiveness last season, and now seven of those linemen are gone, leaving Wendell Moe Jr. as the most senior name still in the room. Josh Heupel restocks up front with four-star tackles Gabriel Osenda and Kamari Blair alongside interior additions Ed Baker, Jeremy George-El and Donovan Haslam, none of whom have proven anything on a college field yet. With no clear returning starters to point to and that much new blood up front, 2026 reads as a rebuild for this group even if the skill talent around them keeps the passing game humming.
Tennessee produced 35 sacks and 86 tackles for loss last fall, then watched Tyre West, Joshua Josephs, Caleb Herring, Bryson Eason and Jordan Ross all walk out the door together, gutting the group that generated most of that pressure. The rebuild leans on the transfer portal rather than what's left in Knoxville: Jordan Norman arrives from Tulane with 6 sacks and 8 TFL already on his resume, Penn State sends both Chaz Coleman and Xavier Gilliam, and Daevin Hobbs (3 sacks, 3.5 TFL) is the closest thing to a proven holdover. With a secondary that allowed 245 passing yards a game a year ago, this front needs Norman and Coleman generating disruption immediately, not developing into it.
Edwin Spillman (81 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Jeremiah Telander (80 tackles, 6 TFL) form a proven core, but Tennessee had to replace Arion Carter's departed production with Amare Campbell, who arrives from Penn State with 103 tackles and 9.5 TFL last season, a straight upgrade in raw numbers at that spot. The unit racked up 35 sacks and 86 tackles for loss a year ago, yet the pass defense allowed 245 yards per game, 114th nationally, meaning even with Campbell's disruption up front, coverage behind this group is what actually decides whether the havoc translates into fewer points allowed.
Tennessee's pass defense was the soft spot in an otherwise disruptive front, ranking 114th in passing yards allowed despite finishing 19th in havoc rate, and the answer this offseason was a secondary overhaul rather than patchwork. Colton Hood and Jalen McMurray, who combined for real tackle production and 4.5 TFL apiece worth of disruption, are gone, replaced by transfers TJ Metcalf from Michigan and DJ Burks from App State, who arrive with 58 and 73 tackles of starting experience respectively. Edrees Farooq's 76 tackles anchor a back end that returns real depth at safety, but the passing-yards number won't fix itself until Metcalf and Burks prove they can hold up on the perimeter alongside a still-developing cornerback room.
Max Gilbert's departure takes real production out the door, 14 of 19 kicks and 106 points, and Tennessee didn't wait around to replace it. Cooper Ranvier arrives from Louisville having gone 21 of 25 with a 51-yard long and 102 points, and he should simply take over the job outright over Josh Turbyville, who has yet to attempt a field goal in his time on campus. Jackson Ross remains the steady piece, averaging 44 yards a punt on 39 attempts, while Logan Foley gives the room another leg to push him and long snapper Blake Howard steps in for the departed John Rosen.
Joey Aguilar's 3,565 yards and Chris Brazzell II's 1,017 receiving are gone, and Tennessee didn't chase a portal quarterback to replace them, instead handing the job to George MacIntyre, who has thrown all of 69 career yards. Ryan Staub arrived from Colorado as insurance, but his 4-interception line behind him suggests this is MacIntyre's offense to run, not a competition. The bigger investment is on defense, where Amare Campbell (103 tackles, 9.5 TFL at Penn State) and Jordan Norman (6 sacks at Tulane) arrive to replace Arion Carter's production, and a No. 8 class plus a heavy safety haul (TJ Metcalf, DJ Burks, Dejuan Lane) signals Josh Heupel is banking on defense carrying a green quarterback.
Joey Aguilar took 3565 yards and 24 touchdowns with him, and Tennessee hands the offense to George MacIntyre, who has thrown for just 69 yards in his career. DeSean Bishop's 1076 rushing yards and a receiving corps of Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley give MacIntyre a real cushion, but every rep he takes decides whether this offense clicks or leans entirely on the ground game. Tennessee's season swings on how fast an unproven passer can grow into the job.
Josh Heupel's team beat the spread almost as often as it beat the officials, going 5-8 against the number despite an 8-5 record, and the home crowd took the brunt of it at 2-5. The real tell is that 1-5 mark laying points as a home favorite, a program treated as safe by oddsmakers that kept finding ways to make covering feel dangerous. Winless straight up against ranked competition, Tennessee's public perception in 2026 still runs ahead of what this roster shows against the teams that matter most.
