Marshall can score with almost anyone behind Del Rio-Wilson at 30.8 points per game, but a defense giving up 30.3 puts this team in a shootout it has no roster talent edge to win, sitting 104th in the power rankings with only 49% production returning.
Can Tony Gibson's defense hold together when just 31.1% of its production returns? The answer leans grim, since replacing that much experience in one offseason almost always shows up in missed tackles and blown coverages before it shows up as growth, and Marshall's shootout-prone identity leaves zero margin for a defense still learning itself. Expect the growing pains to define the season more than anything Del Rio-Wilson does with the ball.
The Penn State trip is a paycheck game Marshall isn't built to win, but the season actually gets decided in the Sun Belt gut punches at James Madison and Old Dominion, both toss-ups the Herd projects as underdogs in. A 123rd-ranked schedule still stacks Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and App State at home, all games Marshall is favored in but none by margins that let Tony Gibson coast. Split those road tests and the 71% bowl odds hold; lose both and 6-6 becomes the ceiling instead of the floor.

Tony Gibson's first season landed at 5-7 overall and 3-5 in Sun Belt play, with a power rating (No. 104) that reflects a roster still being rebuilt in his image. The record and the conference mark are the two numbers that stick out from year one, but a second season gives Gibson room to show whether his approach compounds rather than stalls. Marshall's 2026 story is less about last year's ledger and more about whether the on-field product finally matches the vision he's installing.
The story here is the split personality: a rushing attack that ranked 21st nationally in yards per game paired with a pass defense that gave up 262 yards a game, 127th in the country. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson comes back after throwing for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns, and with the run game already established, his job in 2026 is simply not to get in the way of it, since the offense's real problem was an explosiveness rate that ranked 123rd, not the passer. None of that matters if the secondary issues persist, because a defense allowing 30.3 points per game turns every Del Rio-Wilson touchdown into a game of matching scores rather than pulling away.
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson comes back after throwing for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions, giving Tony Gibson the kind of proven, low-turnover starter most Sun Belt teams have to guess at. The offense he runs was already productive at 30.8 points per game, but it leaned on the ground game (198 rushing yards per game, 21st) while the pass attack ranked just 91st in yardage and the offense converted third downs at only 35.2%. With Del Rio-Wilson back and West Virginia transfer Khalil Wilkins added as insurance, the path to more points in 2026 runs through cleaning up those third-down failures and finding more explosive plays through the air rather than replacing the guy under center.
Marshall is rebuilding its backfield almost entirely through the portal after Antwan Roberts (512 yards, 4 TD) and Michael Allen (385 yards, 4 TD) both departed off a rushing attack that ranked 21st nationally in yards per game. TJ Lester arrives from West Georgia with 432 yards and 6 touchdowns and projects as the new workhorse, flanked by Kentucky transfer Jamarion Wilcox and Maryland's Josiah McLaurin, while Jo'Shon Barbie (249 yards, 5 TD) is the lone proven holdover with real carries. The talent got fresher, not necessarily better, so Lester's transition from a Sun Belt-caliber West Georgia backfield is the swing factor in whether this ground game stays a strength or slips.
Demarcus Lacey's 65 catches and 769 yards walk out the door, and Marshall replaces that production with a VMI transfer rather than an internal name jumping up the depth chart: Owen Sweeney arrives off a 44-catch, 723-yard, 8-touchdown season and immediately becomes the top target. Adrian Norton (28-383-5) and De'Andre Tamarez (32-395-2) both return to give Sweeney complementary pieces already established in the passing game, while North Carolina transfer Chris Culliver adds a 5-catch, 100-yard, 1-touchdown body to the room. The bigger issue is scheme fit, since this passing attack ranked 91st in passing yards per game and 123rd in explosiveness last season, so Sweeney's arrival matters less as a talent upgrade than as a test of whether Marshall can actually stretch the field in 2026.
Toby Payne's 36 catches for 387 yards and 3 scores give Marshall a legitimate every-down target back in the fold, and that continuity matters for an offense that ran the ball well (198 yards per game, 21st) but struggled to hit chunk plays (123rd in explosiveness). Tracy Stephens adds a proven red zone piece off his own touchdown catch, while Brandon Hettwer, Rhett McGrew and Shawn Rouse arrive without a stat line, leaving Payne to carry the receiving load in year two under Tony Gibson. With the passing game already lagging at 91st in yards per game, Payne's ability to create explosive plays down the seam could be the difference between the offense staying stuck in that rut or finally stretching the field.
Marshall's run game hit 198 yards per game and a 21st-ranked clip on the ground in 2025, but the pass protection allowed 17 sacks and the offense stalled at a 35.2% third-down rate, and Tony Gibson rebuilt the interior with transfers Jaquez Joiner (UCF) and Robby Martin (West Virginia) rather than trust it to holdovers alone. The bulk of the room still returns around juniors Evan Ferguson and Peyton Ellis, with true freshmen Justyn Lyles and Jae'Von White added for depth up front. With 12 linemen back against six departures, the pieces are there to keep pushing the run game rather than fix the middling passing attack, so expect Marshall's offense to lean on the ground again in 2026.
Marshall is rebuilding its front almost from scratch. Paul Hutson III (37 tackles, 3 sacks, 6 TFL) and Jamaal Whyce Jr. (29 tackles, 2.5 sacks) are both gone, leaving Braydin Ward, who had 4.5 sacks and 6 TFL, as the only proven disruptor up front. The reinforcements are all unproven: high school signee Caden Turner joins alongside transfer additions Terry Nwabuisi-Ezeala from Vanderbilt, Keydel Painter from Virginia Union and Cole Funderburk from Wake Forest, none of whom have logged a college snap. A defense that already ranked 127th in passing yards allowed per game has to get quicker answers from that group than the name recognition suggests.
Javae Gilmore is the one piece Tony Gibson can build around, his 56 tackles and 9.5 TFL dwarfing anything else back at linebacker after Kerion Martin, Jibreel Al-Amin and Jayland Parker all departed with their combined production out the door. That exodus, six linebackers in all, forces immediate answers from a mix of unproven pieces, three-star freshmen Andre Parker, Zeke Gunn and Brysen Davies plus NC State transfer Kelvon McBride, none of whom bring meaningful tape with them. Marshall's run defense held up in 2025 at 67th in rushing yards allowed, but 127th against the pass and 109th in points allowed per game show where a retooled front seven still has work to do.
The pass defense was the problem in 2025, giving up 262 yards a game through the air (127th), and Marshall answered by gutting the back end rather than patching it. Boogie Trotter (73 tackles), Cam Smith (66 tackles, 2 sacks) and Darrell Sweeting (37 tackles) are all gone, so Daytione Smith (50 tackles) becomes the anchor at safety with Josh Pierre-Louis and Caleb Clark-Glover the steadiest holdovers at corner. Five three-star newcomers, headlined by NC State transfer Terrente Hinton and corner Brayden Hall, arrive with almost no proven production between them, which means the unit that sank Marshall's defense a year ago is now betting on inexperience to fix it.
Marshall loses its entire specialist corps, and the numbers walking out the door are real: Lorcan Quinn hit 21 of 26 field goals with a 55-yard long, and Nathan Totten averaged 44.9 yards on 55 punts. None of that production returns, so the Herd rebuilds from scratch with incoming kicker Jorge Diaz Nicolas and punter Cooper Heimbach, plus long snappers Chase Ortiz and Riley Winkler, none of whom has logged a college stat. Returning placekicker Ty Powell has no prior numbers either, which makes this less a battle for a job than a full leap of faith on an entirely new group.
Marshall's skill groups got gutted this offseason, with Demarcus Lacey (65 catches, 769 yards), Antwan Roberts (512 rushing yards) and Michael Allen (385 rushing yards) all out the door, and Tony Gibson answered almost entirely through the portal. VMI transfer Owen Sweeney arrives with 723 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns already on his résumé, giving Carlos Del Rio-Wilson a proven outside target rather than an unknown, while West Georgia's TJ Lester (432 rushing yards, 6 TD) is brought in to replace the departed backfield production. With a 123rd-ranked recruiting class, this roster is being remade by veteran transfers rather than blue-chip signees, and Sweeney and Lester are the two arrivals who matter most to whether that approach holds up.
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is back after throwing for 2043 yards and 17 touchdowns, but the 65-catch, 769-yard, 5-touchdown target he leaned on in Demarcus Lacey is gone. De'Andre Tamarez, Toby Payne and Adrian Norton all return with modest 2025 numbers, and none of them approached Lacey's production, so whichever of that trio scales up becomes the difference between Del Rio-Wilson's passing game clicking again and Marshall's offense taking a step back.
Marshall went 5-7 straight up but covered at a 58% clip, and the split tells the real story of Tony Gibson's first year setting a market price. The Herd were money at home, covering 4-2 including a perfect mark as a road underdog, while losses never spiraled since Marshall bounced back to cover four of six games the week after a defeat. A 1-2 mark laying points as a home favorite is the one soft spot, but a team this profitable against the number heading into year two under Gibson is not the pushover its record suggests.
