A defense that held opponents to 18.8 points per game, good for 16th nationally, is the actual reason Fresno State can survive a rebuild at quarterback while a roster ranked just 90th in talent tries to squeeze one more winning season out of Matt Entz's second year.
Can Khristian Martin hold the job for all twelve games? With only 47.7% of the offense's production returning and no proven backup plan behind him, Fresno State has to bank on Martin growing into the role weekly rather than plugging in a ready-made answer. The likelier path is a bumpy first half that settles once he logs enough live snaps, since nothing in his background points to instant polish, just an opportunity nobody else on the roster is set up to take.
The trip to USC is a near-lock loss, an 8% shot that exists mostly to cash a check, and the season's actual identity gets defined later against Boise State at home and at San Diego State, both true coin-flip fights in the 30s and 40s range. Toss-ups at Washington State, Utah State and Texas State mean Matt Entz's group could just as easily land at 7-5 as slide toward 5-7, with no cushion built into the middle of this slate. A projected 7-5 mark with bowl odds sitting at 83% suggests the model trusts Fresno State to win the games it should, but the Boise State and San Diego State results are what actually separate a solid follow-up year from a step back.

Matt Entz's first year produced a 9-4 record built on a 2-0 mark in one-score games and a plus-5 turnover margin over 13 games, both the kind of results that tend to even out rather than repeat. The offense squeezed points out efficiently, but the defense needed 15.3 yards per point allowed against a 14.6 league median, meaning opponents scored cheaper than the record let on. Entz's 5-3 conference mark and winning season buy him goodwill entering year two, but the 2026 team will look a lot more ordinary if those close-game and turnover swings flip the other way.
Fresno State won nine games last fall on the strength of a defense that ranked 10th nationally in yards allowed and 2nd against the pass, while the offense limped to 111th in success rate and 111th in points per scoring opportunity, a gap that defined 2025 and now defines the offseason mandate. Matt Entz brings in Maryland transfer Khristian Martin as the projected 2026 starting quarterback, a total reset at the position after a passing attack that finished 112th nationally in yards per game. If Martin can turn Fresno State's stalled-drive problem into finished ones, the defense's havoc rate (30th) and turnover margin (+5) give this team a real shot to close the gap between how it plays and how it wins.
E.J. Warner's departure wipes out the only proven passing production on this roster, and Fresno State didn't replace it with a returning arm. Khristian Martin, a Maryland transfer with just 105 yards on his college resume, takes the first-team reps into camp as the front-runner over holdovers Jonathan Craft and Jayden Mandal and a trio of true freshmen. Given a passing game that ranked 112th in yards per game a year ago, whoever wins that camp battle inherits an offense that needs far more through the air than it got in 2025.
Fresno State didn't lose its backfield, it added to it. Rayshon Luke (699 yards, 6 TD) and Bryson Donelson (583 yards, 5 TD) both return as the clear top two, with Brandon Ramirez's 271 yards giving Matt Entz a third proven option, so the departures of Johnathan Arceneaux and Elijah Gilliam barely dent the room. Bucknell transfer Tariq Thomas arrives with 602 yards of his own production, stacking a four-deep rotation onto a rushing attack that already ranked 54th nationally, while the passing game at 112th in yards per game means this ground crew will carry the offense again.
Josiah Freeman's 52 catches and 6 touchdowns anchor a passing game that still finished 112th in passing yards per game, and the bigger problem is everything behind him: Ezekiel Avit caught 28 balls without a single touchdown, and no other returner topped 13 catches. Fresno State didn't lose much statistical production, but it went out and added bodies anyway, bringing in Darrian Anderson via transfer from Oregon along with three-star freshmen Xavier Owens, Franklin Lockard and Maxwell Young. Anderson arrives with no logged college stats, so the receiving room's ceiling still runs through whether Freeman can turn a middling 183 yards per game passing attack into something more explosive.
Fresno State's tight end room produced next to nothing behind Richie Anderson III's 31 catches for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, and now that entire production is gone, along with Kamron Beachem's 7 grabs and Jake Tarwater's 5. Brock Lium is the only returner with a catch on his résumé, just 2 for 10 yards, which pushes the job toward Northern Illinois transfer Jake Appleget, who caught 7 passes for 57 yards and a score last season and arrives as the most proven pass-catcher on the depth chart. With a passing attack that ranked 112th in yards per game, Fresno State needs Appleget to be more than a complementary piece from day one.
Nineteen sacks allowed and a 38.6% success rate marked an offense that too often stalled behind the line in 2025, and Matt Entz brought in four new pieces to fix it: tackles Alex Rivera and Oscar Weigel plus interior linemen Efren Siuloa and Patrick Barnett. They will compete for jobs among seniors Braylan Henderson, Edward Fonua, Gino Quinones, Kyson Van Vugt and Pat Barnett, part of a group where 15 linemen return against seven departures. With that much continuity up front, the bigger question is whether the room can turn steady bodies into more explosive, higher-percentage plays than last year's 96th-ranked yards per play.
Fresno State's pass defense ranked 2nd nationally a year ago without a single dominant edge presence, and that identity gets tested now that Finn Claypool's 6.5 sacks and Korey Foreman's 5.5 TFL are off the roster. Jahzon Jacks (3.5 sacks, 7 TFL) and Deijon Laffitte become the front's proven disruptors, but the reload up front is almost entirely three-star freshmen edges, Jake Plummer, Solomon Baker, Cooper Willoughby and Brendan Huddleston, none with a snap of college production. Matt Entz built a top-16 scoring defense on scheme and coverage rather than a heavy pass rush, and 2026 asks that formula to hold while the pressure comes from unproven hands.
Jadon Pearson's 96 tackles and 6 TFL walk out the door, and no returning linebacker comes close to that workload. Tytus Khajavi (37 tackles, 3 TFL) and Kvion Thunderbird (32 tackles) take over as the run-and-chase pair for a defense that finished 10th in yards allowed and 2nd against the pass, so the pieces around them are elite even if the tackle production up front is thinner. Fresno State didn't add a portal name at the position, leaning on three-star freshmen Jaydon Sutko and Zephaniah Sesay for depth, which means Khajavi and Thunderbird have to hold up as three-down players for a unit that can't afford to take a step back against the run (43rd) after losing its most productive tackler.
Fresno State's pass defense ranked 2nd nationally in passing yards allowed a year ago, but the group that built that number is largely gone, with Camryn Bracha, Jakari Embry, Al'zillion Hamilton and Jayden Davis all departed. Simeon Harris (53 tackles, 6.5 TFL) becomes the clear anchor, flanked by Ryan Wilson and Ethan Tierney, while Taylor Powell arrives from Northern Illinois with 30 tackles of starting experience and Croix Stewart brings UCLA pedigree to a safety room otherwise stocked with unproven names like Isaiah Lucero and Truly Bell III. That much turnover in the back seven makes holding onto the country's second-best pass defense a real stretch, even with Harris and Powell steadying things.
Dylan Lynch is gone after hitting 21 of 27 field goals and piling up 97 points, and Fresno State has no returning stat line to hand the job to instead. Ryan Kobzeff and Connor Tripp are both on the roster without game numbers attached, and Ashland transfer Manaki Watanabe arrives as an unproven three-star addition to the competition. Nick Verdugo's steady 40.3-yard average keeps the punting operation settled, but the placekicking production that powered close wins in 2025 has to be replaced by someone with zero track record.
A 9-4 season built around E.J. Warner's 2,030 passing yards gets rewritten around Khristian Martin, the Maryland transfer projected to start after throwing for just 105 yards in limited action there. The bigger swing might be at running back, where Tariq Thomas arrives from Bucknell with 602 rushing yards to replace the departed Johnathan Arceneaux and Elijah Gilliam outright. A modest No. 70 recruiting class means this roster leans on the portal, not high school talent, to keep pace with last year's results.
Fresno State's 9-4 mark leaned on turnovers and tight finishes breaking its way, so the meat of 2026 rests on Khristian Martin proving that wasn't the whole story. The Maryland transfer arrives with just 105 passing yards, 1 TD and 0 INT to his name, replacing E.J. Warner's 2030-yard, 13-TD workload, but he inherits a run game with Rayshon Luke and Bryson Donelson already in place. If Martin manages the offense well enough to let that ground attack carry it, Fresno State survives the regression; if he struggles, the wins from a year ago don't come back around.
Fresno State went 9-4 straight up but only 7-6 against the number, and the split tells on the Bulldogs: they were money as road underdogs (2-1, 67%) and after a loss (3-1, 75%), yet cratered to 3-5 covering inside conference play. That gap between a nine-win season and a losing conference betting record points to a team that padded its record outside league play under Matt Entz, now in year two. Books have caught up to the non-conference profile, so 2026 value likely lives in how the market prices Fresno State as a road dog again rather than as a straight-up favorite at home.
