Tony Elliott built an 11-win team on defense and a roster ranked 62nd nationally in talent, which means Pribula does not need to be spectacular in year one, just steady enough not to waste what is already in place around him.
Can Beau Pribula win with almost nobody around him who did it last year? Virginia returns just 9.1% of its offensive production, meaning the Missouri transfer inherits a skill group and line built almost entirely from newcomers rather than proven college performers. That gap makes early-season offensive rhythm the real variable, and it favors a slow build where Virginia leans on its defense to buy Pribula time to develop chemistry with an unproven cast.
Virginia comes off an 11-3 season with 7-1 in the ACC, but the projected 8-4 mark says this schedule bites back harder than last year's did. The road trips to SMU (36%) and Florida State (40%) are true toss-ups, and the Virginia Tech rivalry game away from Charlottesville (45%) sits right there with them as the stretch that will decide whether Tony Elliott's fifth year matches the last one. Everything else, including a manageable neutral-site test against West Virginia and a home slate that includes North Carolina and Syracuse, is winnable, so how Virginia handles those three road games is the whole season.

Tony Elliott's fourth year produced an 11-3 season and an ACC title game appearance, but the underlying numbers say Virginia played over its head. In conference play, the Cavaliers won at an 87.5% clip while their yardage margin against those same opponents supported something closer to 72.7%, and a turnover margin that ran plus-6 over 14 games is not a habit that repeats. With only 24% of production back and an offense that scored efficiently enough to outrun a defense that finished 15.9 yards allowed per point against a 14.6 league median, the ingredients that papered over the gap are largely gone, and a step back in the record is the more likely 2026 story than a repeat run at Duke.
Virginia won 11 games with an offense that ranked 82nd in success rate and 82nd in points per scoring opportunity, a defense-carries profile that Tony Elliott has to answer for in year five. Beau Pribula, projected to start after arriving from Missouri, threw for 1,946 yards with 11 touchdowns against 9 interceptions there, and his job is turning the nation's 11th-best third-down offense into one that actually finishes drives instead of stalling short. The defense that ranked 20th in yards allowed and forced a +6 turnover margin bought this program a lot of games last year; Pribula's efficiency in the red zone determines whether 2026 needs that bailout again.
Virginia produced an 11-3 season without a single quarterback of consequence returning, since Chandler Morris and Daniel Kaelin are both gone and Cole Geer's entire résumé reads eight yards on the ground floor. That gap gets filled through the portal rather than internal development: Beau Pribula, who threw for 1946 yards and 11 touchdowns at Missouri, arrives as the projected starter, with Eli Holstein's 12-touchdown season at Pittsburgh giving Tony Elliott a legitimate camp fight rather than a coronation. Pribula inherits an offense that finished 11th in third down rate and 29th in total yards, so the ceiling is already built; his job is not losing what Morris and Kaelin left in place.
J'Mari Taylor's 1062 yards and 14 touchdowns walk out the door, and none of the returning backs came close to that workload last season, so Virginia went shopping. Jekail Middlebrook arrives from Middle Tennessee off a 752-yard, 4-touchdown season and looks like the new lead back, with Peyton Lewis (Tennessee, 290 yards, 7 TD) and Solomon Beebe (UAB, 338 yards, 6 TD) adding proven scoring punch behind him. Xavier Brown and Noah Vaughn return with modest 241 and 174-yard totals, but this ground game now runs through transfer production rather than internal continuity.
Virginia's leading returning receiver caught three passes last season, which tells the real story: this room got rebuilt almost entirely through the portal after Jahmal Edrine, Eli Wood and Kameron Courtney all left. Jacquon Gibson arrives from Massachusetts off a 63-catch, 616-yard season and projects as the immediate top target, with Tyson Davis (25 catches, 323 yards, 2 TD at Central Michigan) adding a proven second option. Dylan Cope, Da'Shawn Martin and Rico Flores Jr. arrive with no college production yet, so how fast Gibson and Davis assimilate will decide whether a passing game that ranked just 55th in yards per game can keep pace with the run-heavy attack that carried Virginia's offense in 2025.
Sage Ennis' 23 catches and 5 touchdowns walk out the door, but no single tight end is being asked to replace that production alone. John Rogers (9 catches, 101 yards, 1 TD) and Dakota Twitty (11 catches, 129 yards) both return with modest but real target shares, and the addition of Connor Cox from North Carolina gives the room a proven pass-catcher rather than a projected one. With a passing attack that ranked 55th in yards per game a year ago, this group's job in 2026 is volume through committee, not a single breakout name.
Virginia allowed just 18 sacks last season and cleared 419 yards a game behind a line that is now scattered to the transfer portal and the draft, with Jack Witmer, Brady Wilson, David Wohlabaugh Jr., Kevin Wigenton II and Ethan Sipe among ten departures. Tony Elliott is patching the room with three-star additions Alex Payne, Michael Gildea, Luke Hatfield, Dylan Biehl and Ryan Brubaker rather than one marquee starter, while seniors Cole Surber, Dane Steele, Drake Metcalf, Makilan Thomas and McKale Boley carry the only real experience back. With so much size and know-how gone from a group that ranked 82nd in success rate a year ago, this reads as a rebuild up front even if the skill talent around it stays productive.
Virginia's line that helped hold opponents to 19.6 points and 116 rushing yards a game lost its top four disruptors in Mitchell Melton, Daniel Rickert, Jacob Holmes and Jahmeer Carter, so the 2026 group is largely reconstructed through the portal. Fisher Camac (44 tackles, 5.5 TFL) and Jason Hammond (33 tackles, 2.5 sacks) anchor the interior and edge, but the real bet is on transfers Zion Wilson (6 sacks, 10 TFL at East Carolina) and Nnanna Anyanwu (5 sacks, 7 TFL at UTSA) replacing that lost production immediately rather than developing into it. With a run-stuff rate that already ranked 68th, this front's ceiling depends on Wilson and Anyanwu translating their production against ACC blocking, not on the returning pieces alone.
Virginia's defense finished 20th in yards allowed per game last fall, but the group loses James Jackson's 66 tackles and Maddox Marcellus's 49, stripping out two starters who combined for four sacks and four tackles for loss. Kam Robinson, who put up 64 tackles and 4 TFL of his own, becomes the clear centerpiece, flanked by Landon Danley's 48 tackles as the returning experience behind him. Everyone else in the room is a projection, whether it's Caleb Hardy and Myles Brown pushing for bigger roles or three-star Cincinnati Elder product Derek Uran trying to crack the rotation as a true freshman, which makes the tackle-for-loss production this unit generates in 2026 the real swing factor after ranking just 71st a year ago.
Devin Neal's 88 tackles are gone, but Virginia didn't just hope for a replacement, it went out and bought three of them: Brandyn Hillman (Michigan), Jaylen Jones (Georgia State, 66 tackles and 4.5 TFL) and Jalen McNair (Buffalo) all arrive as safeties with real production already on tape. Ethan Minter (47 tackles, 4 TFL) anchors a group that finished 20th in yards allowed per game, and pairing him with that transfer trio should keep the back end from missing a beat. The corners are the bigger question, with Kevon Gray and Josiah Persinger both light on tackle numbers and freshmen Alex Dunn and Jayden Covil unproven, so this defense's ceiling in 2026 gets set by how fast those two rookies catch up.
Virginia's special teams stay steady where it matters most: Will Bettridge is back after connecting on 24 of 30 field goals with a long of 47 and 121 points, giving Tony Elliott a proven weapon rather than a question mark in close games. The punting picture is actually deeper than last year's damage suggests, with Daniel Sparks (47.2 average on 37 punts) and Elijah Slibeck (46.2 on 11 punts) both back to handle the job. Long snapper Jacob Tannenbaum returns as well, so with Vadin Bruot and Jorge Diaz Nicolas gone and only a 2-star long snapper and kicker added for depth, this unit's 2026 outlook rests entirely on the players already in the building rather than any newcomer.
Virginia went 11-3 with a roster that recruited nowhere near that level, and instead of running it back, Tony Elliott blew up the skill corps that got him there. J'Mari Taylor's 1062 rushing yards and Trell Harris's 847 receiving yards are gone, replaced by a wave of transfers led by Beau Pribula, who arrives from Missouri to take over at quarterback after throwing for 1946 yards. The backfield now leans on Jekail Middlebrook's 752 rushing yards from Middle Tennessee, with Solomon Beebe and Peyton Lewis added as insurance, meaning Elliott is betting that portal volume can replace departed production faster than a 111th-ranked recruiting class ever could.
Virginia won 11 games last year on defense and ball control, but the 2026 ceiling rests on Beau Pribula turning last year's Missouri numbers, 1,946 yards with 11 touchdowns against 9 interceptions, into a cleaner, more decisive version behind Tony Elliott. The backfield gives him cover with Xavier Brown returning and Jekail Middlebrook arriving from Middle Tennessee off a 752-yard season, but a run-heavy approach only stretches so far in the ACC. If Pribula cuts down the turnovers, this offense has a floor high enough to keep pace with the defense that already carried the program to 7-1 in conference.
Virginia did not just win 11 games in 2025, it beat the number doing it, covering 75% of its conference spreads and going a perfect 2-0 against ranked competition. Tony Elliott's team also answered every stumble, covering all three times out after a loss, a sign this group never let one bad week snowball. That combination of ACC dominance and ranked-win credibility is why bettors will trust Virginia as a favorite again in 2026 rather than treat last season as a fluke.
