Minnesota's roster talent ranks 41st nationally, a full-year better than where the Gophers actually finished, so a jump from 8-5 to something sturdier in P.J. Fleck's tenth year is less hope than expectation, especially if the defense tightens up from 51st in scoring D and stops leaving points on the board that talent gap should have prevented.
Can Minnesota's defense survive losing Koi Perich, the do-everything defensive back who piled up 82 tackles and 3 TFL last season? With only 59.6% of defensive production returning, the answer leans rough early, since no single returnee replicates that kind of range and disruption, and the back seven will need multiple players to cover ground Perich covered alone. Lindsey and the offense returning at 70.5% buys some cushion, but this defense likely takes a step back before it stabilizes.
The soft entries against Eastern Illinois and Akron will not tell P.J. Fleck much, and even Mississippi State and Purdue sit at coin-flip odds. The season turns on three trips into brutal territory: at Indiana, at Penn State, and a home date with Michigan, where Minnesota is given just a 6%, 16% and 21% shot respectively. A schedule ranked 38th nationally in difficulty and a 41% bowl projection say this group is built to scrap for six wins, not chase a signature upset in that trio.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
The 8-5 mark in year 10 looks like steady-state Fleck, but the underlying numbers argue Minnesota got lucky twice over: a 4-1 record in one-score games and a plus-7 turnover margin over 13 games are exactly the kind of results that rarely repeat, and the Gophers' actual win rate in conference play ran well ahead of what their yardage margin against league opponents would predict. The offset is real too: 70% returning production says this roster is better built than last year's record showed. Expect the schedule to even out the close-game and turnover luck while the returning group keeps Fleck competitive, a wash more than a leap.
Drake Lindsey threw for 2,382 yards and 18 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions in 2025, yet Minnesota's offense still ranked 129th in total yards and 122nd in yards per play, with a rushing attack stuck at 103 yards per game. That gap between a clean, careful passer and a bottom-third offense is the story for 2026, and it puts the burden on Lindsey to create explosive plays an offense ranked 99th in explosiveness rarely generated on its own. The defense, which posted 39 sacks and ranked 28th in rushing yards allowed, buys Fleck's team margin for error the offense has not been earning itself.
Drake Lindsey's 2382 yards and 18 touchdowns came inside an offense that ranked 129th nationally in total yards per game and 122nd in yards per play, so the numbers he needs to move are around him, not his own arm. He returns as the clear starter with Max Shikenjanski and Dylan Wittke behind him, while Michael Merdinger arrives from Liberty with actual game snaps if Fleck wants a change of pace. The passing game was fine at 190 yards per game and 102nd nationally, but a 39.9% success rate means Lindsey has been asked to bail out a stalled ground attack all season, and that burden does not lighten unless the run game improves first.
Darius Taylor is back as the clear lead, but 103 rushing yards a game (129th nationally) says this ground game needs more than his 670 yards to matter. TJ Thomas adds a proven complement off his 6 touchdowns, and with Fame Ijeboi's 441 yards gone, the door opens for four-star newcomer Ryan Estrada to push for early carries behind them. The pieces are more talented on paper, but until the line stops bleeding negative downs, Minnesota's run game stays a middling 129th-ranked unit no matter who is holding the ball.
Minnesota's passing game produced only 190 yards per game a year ago, a number that has to move if Javon Tracy (37 catches, 454 yards, 6 TD) and Jalen Smith (28 catches, 419 yards, 4 TD) are going to carry more than they did in 2025. The bigger swing is in personnel: Le'Meke Brockington's 46 catches for 484 yards are gone, and Minnesota answered by adding Cincinnati transfer Noah Jennings (23 catches, 323 yards) and Auburn transfer Perry Thompson, plus four-star signee Quayd Hendryx out of high school. With Donielle Hayes and Bradley Martino still unproven on paper, the receiving room leans on Tracy and Smith to be the known quantities while Jennings and Thompson prove they can turn a unit stuck at 122nd in yards per play into something more explosive.
Minnesota loses nearly all of its production at the position, with Jameson Geers (26 catches, 206 yards, 4 TD) and Drew Biber (18 catches, 136 yards) both gone from an offense that already ranked 129th in total yards per game. The answer arrives via transfer in Kaden Helms, who caught 5 passes for 35 yards and a touchdown, giving Minnesota its most proven receiving tight end on the roster over returning options Pierce Walsh and Julian Johnson, who combined for just 3 catches last season. With Gabe Weaver and George Rohl added as unproven pieces, Helms projects as the immediate difference-maker in an offense that badly needs more explosive plays after ranking 99th in explosiveness.
Minnesota averaged just 103 rushing yards per game and 4.93 yards per play last season, numbers that made the ground game a liability more than a weapon. Six departures hit a front that never really opened holes, and P.J. Fleck is leaning on senior class holdovers Ashton Beers, Greg Johnson, Tony Nelson, Jerome Williams and sophomore Brett Carroll to anchor a retooled group. Four-star tackle Andrew Trout headlines a haul of incoming linemen including Gavin Meier, Aaron Thomas, Bennett Warren and Lucas Tielsch, but none carry game experience yet, so this reads as a rebuild that will define whether Minnesota's offense escapes triple-digit national rankings in yards per play.
Anthony Smith anchors this group after a 12.5-sack, 17.5-TFL breakout, and with Karter Menz (6.5 sacks) and Jaxon Howard also back, Minnesota returns the core that helped produce 39 sacks and 92 tackles for loss a year ago. The losses up front are real, with Deven Eastern, Rushawn Lawrence and Jalen Logan-Redding all gone, but the staff replenished bodies rather than stars, adding four-star arrivals Aaden Aytch and Howie Johnson plus Xion Chapman and Naquan Crowder to rotate behind the returning starters. The pass rush should stay a strength, but the run defense sat only 55th in run-stuff rate, and that's the number this retooled front needs to move for Minnesota's defense to take the next step.
Maverick Baranowski is the anchor here, coming off a 102-tackle, 9 TFL season that dwarfs anyone else in this room, and Minnesota's defense (39 sacks, 11th in TFL) was disruptive enough up front that his production should translate again. The bigger swing is replacing Devon Williams' 89 tackles and 8.5 TFL, and Fleck went to the portal for Andrew Marshall, who posted 45 tackles and 4 TFL at Eastern Michigan and slots in as a plug-and-play piece next to Matt Kingsbury. Behind them, high school signee Angel Luciano and Liberty commit Hudson Dunn arrive with no college snaps, which means the immediate ceiling of this unit rides on Baranowski and Marshall carrying the load while the rest of the room develops.
Koi Perich's 82 tackles and ball-hawking instincts walk out the door, and Minnesota fills that void with continuity rather than a splashy portal name at safety. Kerry Brown (56 tackles, 4 TFL) and John Nestor (50 tackles, 6 TFL) anchor a secondary that still has to answer for a pass defense that gave up 211 yards per game through the air, 51st nationally. The reinforcements are almost entirely high-school signees, corner Aydan West arriving from Michigan State as the lone transfer while safeties Justin Hopkins, Jordan Lampkins and Tavian White come in straight from high school, meaning West is the closest thing to plug-and-play help behind Brown and Nestor in 2026.
The kicking job is wide open after Brady Denaburg's 14-of-21 season and 75 points walked out the door, and Minnesota didn't just wait around, bringing in Beckham Sunderland from Michigan and Zachary Robbins from Utah State to compete for placekicking duties. Daniel Jackson returns but has yet to attempt a field goal, so this is effectively a fresh competition rather than a handoff. Tom Weston's steady 42.6-yard average gives Fleck's staff one settled piece while the rest of the specialist room gets sorted out.
Minnesota's story is what Drake Lindsey has to throw to now. Koi Perich, Devon Williams and Le'Meke Brockington are all gone off a defense and passing game that carried last year's 8-5 mark, and P.J. Fleck answered by churning 19 transfers in, headlined by receivers Noah Jennings, Zion Steptoe and Auburn's Perry Thompson plus linebacker Andrew Marshall. None of those arrivals profile as instant difference-makers on paper, so this season leans on Lindsey's growth and chemistry with an almost entirely reshuffled receiving corps rather than a returning identity.
Drake Lindsey is back with 2,382 yards and 18 touchdowns already in the bank, but Minnesota's passing game needs Auburn transfer Perry Thompson to turn 17 catches into a true No. 1 receiver workload. Darius Taylor and TJ Thomas can carry the ground game, so the gap between an 8-5 team and a Big Ten contender comes down to whether Thompson gives Lindsey a downfield answer defenses have to respect.
Minnesota went 7-0 straight up at home but covered just 3-4, meaning P.J. Fleck's crew wins the games books already expect and rarely by the margin bettors pay for. The road split tells the real story: 0-4 straight up and 0-4 against the spread away from Huntington Bank Stadium, with road underdog spots going 0-3 against the number. Conference play mirrored the whole season at 5-4 straight up but only 3-6 against the spread, so backing this team against the number in 2026 means betting on a home favorite that still has to prove it can blow anyone out.
