Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3Mountain West · Rob Harley, year 1 · 3-9 last season · No. 125 in our FBS ratings
Rob Harley takes over a roster ranked 125th in talent nationally with only 28% production returning, and the only certainty he has is Jalen Macon running an offense that managed just 17.1 points per game a year ago.
With just 10.5% of defensive production back, the real question is whether Rob Harley's first NIU defense can avoid getting torched while Jalen Macon and a retooled offense try to find rhythm. History says no unit replaces nearly nine-tenths of its snaps and holds steady right away, so expect the Huskies to lean on Macon to win shootouts rather than count on stops. That imbalance, not any quarterback controversy, is what will shape how 2026 actually plays out.
Rob Harley's first slate opens against a wall, a trip to Iowa the Huskies are given just a 4% chance to escape, and the road doesn't ease much with Arizona and UNLV also long shots at 7% and 12%. Everything winnable sits in the middle of the schedule, with Nevada at home a near coin flip at 50% and UTEP the closest thing to a sure thing at 61%. A first-year staff building a bowl case has to find four wins in that stretch of toss-ups, because the three real tests are not where the record gets made.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
A 3-9 finish with a 2-6 conference mark and a No. 125 power rating is the wreckage Rob Harley inherits, not something he built, since this is year one of his tenure in DeKalb. That distinction matters here because none of last season's results attach to him, giving him a clean baseline to install his own team without last year's record following him around. The number worth watching in 2026 is not the record but whether Harley's first roster closes the gap between that No. 125 rating and league-average Mountain West football.
Northern Illinois could run it in 2025, ranking 29th nationally in rushing yards per game, but the passing attack was nearly unplayable at 134th in the country, and that's the mess Jalen Macon steps into as the settled 2026 starter after throwing for just 105 yards and one touchdown a season ago. The offense finished 132nd in success rate and 121st in points per scoring opportunity, so moving the ball on the ground did not translate to points. Macon does not need to reinvent this attack, he needs to make the passing game a threat that keeps defenses honest, because the run alone left this offense at 129th in scoring.
Jalen Macon takes over an offense that finished 134th in passing yards per game, and his own résumé so far is a thin 105 yards on the ground of Josh Holst's departed 689 to replace. Rob Harley walks in for year one without ever having called a play for this group, and the only proven weapon around Macon is a run game that ranked 29th nationally, not an air attack. Bryshawn Brown and Asa Johnson arrive with no game snaps yet, so Macon's grip on the job is really about whether NIU can complete enough passes to stop living on 31.8% third-down conversions.
Northern Illinois could barely move the ball through the air last season, but the ground game ranked 29th nationally in rushing yards per game, and that stayed true even after Chavon Wright's 875 yards walk out the door. Telly Johnson Jr. carried the group with 690 yards and 4 touchdowns and takes over as the clear workhorse, with Lazaro Rogers behind him after a 189-yard year. New coach Rob Harley inherits a run scheme that actually functions in a broken offense, and three-star arrivals Jaiduan Cranford and Da'sean Howard give him bodies to keep it that way once Johnson needs a breather.
DeAree Rogers took 506 yards and three touchdowns with him, and nobody left in the room comes close to replicating it. Rickey Taylor Jr. managed just 134 yards on nine catches, George Dimopoulos caught 11 for only 58, and La'Don Bryant totaled 40 in a passing attack that finished 134th nationally at 99 yards per game. Northern Illinois answered by signing five three-star receivers, Braylon Agee, Zaire McKinney, Jermaine Green, CJ Harkins and Justin Faulkner, none with a college catch, which means Rob Harley is betting his first year on true freshmen fixing a unit that produced almost nothing behind Rogers.
Jake Appleget's modest 7 catches for 57 yards were still the position's biggest 2025 production, and the group replacing him, Devon Akers, Jason Fowler and Devin Habermehl among them, combined for three catches all last year. That fits a passing offense that ranked 134th in the country, so new coach Rob Harley tight ends were never schemed into the answer. Three-star Boonville signee Tyler Klaner arrives with no proven pass-catchers ahead of him, and this remains a blocking-first room propping up a run game that ranked 29th nationally in yards per game rather than a source of receiving production.
Northern Illinois ran for 186 yards a game last season but managed just 99 through the air and 19 sacks allowed, a line that could hold blocks longer than its passing game could ever use it. Rob Harley inherits most of that room, with Tyler Chambers, Logan Gross, Ben Gustafson, Landon Hron, Ross Liegel and Lane Mahnesmith all back even as six linemen depart, so the priority is finding a passing attack worth protecting rather than remaking the trenches. Three-star arrivals Cian Mahoney and Mason Markel at tackle, plus interior additions Brendan Alexander, Brendan Grabot and Kellen Gamble, add competition up front, but the bigger swing in 2026 is whether Harley's passing game can finally catch up to a run-blocking unit that was already functional.
Northern Illinois finished 133rd in tackles for loss and 125th in sacks a year ago, and the answer for 2026 isn't a returning star but a wave of true freshmen: Jvon Hatcher, Ryan Hassett, Terry Robinson, Darrius Summers III and JT King all arrive with zero college snaps between them. Jay'shon Thomas (19 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFL) is the only proven pass rusher left after Jalonnie Williams, Dasean Dixon and Roy Williams all departed, meaning the run defense that allowed 184 yards per game has to be propped up by teenagers before it can be propped up by production. Rob Harley inherits a line that stopped runs at the line just 15.3% of the time, and this group's floor depends on how fast that freshman class plays, not on what little proven depth remains.
Quinn Urwiler's 127 tackles and Filip Maciorowski's 76 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 5.5 TFL walk out the door together, gutting a group that already ranked 133rd in tackles for loss and 125th in sacks last season. Kimar Nelson is the only returner with tackle production on the books, just 5, while Eliot Hummer, Tristan Hunter, KJ McRae and Trenton Nixon carry no statistical track record into new coach Rob Harley first year. Three-star signees Ross Ogden and Jack Murray arrive as unproven pieces, meaning Nelson's snaps matter less than whether Hummer, Hunter, McRae or Nixon can turn opportunity into the disruptive plays this defense badly needs up front.
Northern Illinois loses its top three tacklers in the secondary from a year ago, with Jasper Beeler (74 tackles), Muhammad Jammeh (57) and Donte Harrison (30, 2 TFL) all gone, and that production has to come from somewhere against a pass defense that ranked 12th nationally in yards allowed per game but a run defense that finished 114th. Dev'ion Reynolds (13 tackles) and Broderick Windham (11) are the only proven tacklers left standing, and a four-man safety class of Deacon King, Champ Smith, Tyrese Stanley and Justus Donahoo arrives with zero game snaps between them. Avery Jones brings actual production (9 tackles) into that room, making him the likeliest early contributor among the newcomers while the rest of the group tries to hold onto that elite pass-defense number without the tacklers who anchored it.
Andrew Glass, who hit 10 of 12 field goals with a 41-yard long, is gone, leaving Austin Bullock and JJ Schlenhardt to sort out placekicking duties without a college kick between them. Jake Ference sticks around after a 43.7-yard average on 30 punts, a number that held up better than most of what Northern Illinois put on the field in a 3-9 season, and he gives new coach Rob Harley one settled piece on this unit. The bigger question is whether either Bullock or Schlenhardt can approach Glass's 50 points on makes alone.
Twenty-two players walked out the portal door, including nearly the entire production base: Chavon Wright's 875 rushing yards, DeAree Rogers' 46 catches and Quinn Urwiler's 127 tackles all need replacing under new coach Rob Harley. Only six transfers arrived to offset that exodus, none with prior statistics beyond safety Avery Jones, so freshmen and JUCO transfers like EDGE Mathias Davis and safety Deacon King are being asked to play well beyond their experience immediately. Jalen Macon, who threw for just 105 yards and a touchdown last season, is the settled answer at quarterback, which means this rebuild leans on him growing into the job rather than a transfer swooping in.
Northern Illinois went 3-9, but the underlying numbers, from the offense needing 16.6 yards per point scored to a 1-3 mark in one-score games, point to a team that was worse off than its actual talent level. The ground game now leans on Telly Johnson Jr., who ran for 690 yards and 4 touchdowns a year ago, to pick up the load left by Chavon Wright's departure alongside Lazaro Rogers, who added 189 yards of his own. If Johnson turns that returning volume into more points per yard gained, the close-game math flips and this record climbs on its own.
Bettors got burned on Northern Illinois all year, and covering the number was somehow harder than winning games, with just a 25% cover rate overall and home games the worst of it at 1-5 against the spread. The letdown-after-a-loss trend was brutal too, with the Huskies going 2-6 versus the number the week following a defeat, a sign this program never found its footing long enough to build any market trust. Rob Harley takes over for 2026 with a roster that gave books zero reason to trust chalk in either direction, and until this team proves it can protect a lead or a spread at home, the smart money stays away from Huskies numbers.
