Brent Key hands the offense to Indiana transfer Alberto Mendoza with only 36% of production returning, but a roster ranked 39th nationally in talent means this team should be playing well above the No. 48 power rating it carries into 2026.
Can Alberto Mendoza replicate what Haynes King gave this offense for two years? With just 23.7% of offensive production back around him, Mendoza is walking into a nearly rebuilt attack, but Brent Key has now guided this program to a winning conference mark in year four, and that stability at the top gives the Indiana transfer real structure to lean on. Expect growing pains early, then a competent, ball-control offense by conference play rather than a full step backward.
Georgia Tech's projected 6-6 mark looks jarring next to last year's 9-4 run, but the schedule explains the drop: Brent Key's group draws Georgia on the road at just a 7% clip, then trips to Clemson (23%) and a home date with Tennessee (30%) that together form the real referendum on where this program stands. None of those three carry above a coin-flip shot, and a Virginia Tech road trip (36%) and Pittsburgh road game (38%) add more danger before Georgia gets a chance to feel good about anything. Mercer is the lone tune-up, but the meat of this slate is unforgiving enough that bowl eligibility, not a repeat of last year's ACC success, is the honest bar for 2026.

A 9-4 finish and a 6-2 mark in league play look like the foundation of a program Brent Key has fully built, but the underlying numbers say sell high. Georgia Tech's yardage margin against conference foes implied a win rate well below what actually happened, the Yellow Jackets went 4-2 in one-score games, and they still finished at -6 in turnover margin, three signs of a team that caught more breaks than it earned. The one real substance to bank on is a defense that made opponents earn every point (16.0 yards allowed per point), but with only 36% of production back, expect the record to come back to the field in 2026.
Georgia Tech's offense hit 460 yards a game and ranked 5th nationally in yards per play last season, but almost none of that came from explosive plays, a shortfall that ranked 122nd and left points on the board relative to scoring chances. Enter Alberto Mendoza, the Indiana transfer projected to run the offense in 2026 after throwing 5 touchdowns against just 1 interception in his limited work. If Brent Key's staff can pair that efficient decision-making with even a handful more chunk plays, this offense stops leaving yardage on the table. The bigger issue sits on the other side of the ball, where a defense that allowed 25.0 points per game and posted a middling 13.7% havoc rate did nothing to fix a turnover margin of minus-6, and that number, not the quarterback change, is what capped Georgia Tech at 9-4 last season.
Haynes King's 2951 yards walk out the door with him, and Georgia Tech hands its top-five yards-per-play offense to a transfer who has barely played big-time snaps. Alberto Mendoza, who threw for 286 yards and 5 touchdowns at Indiana, arrives as the front-runner over Graham Knowles and incoming four-star Cole Bergeron, but Brent Key has not shut the door on the competition. The Yellow Jackets ranked 5th nationally in sacks allowed and offensive success rate last year, so the line and scheme will do Mendoza plenty of favors if he wins the job outright.
Georgia Tech didn't need to fix its backfield, it just made it scarier, adding Justice Haynes (857 yards, 10 TD) to a room that already returns Malachi Hosley off a 697-yard, 7-touchdown season. That pairing gives Brent Key two proven closers behind a line that allowed just 10 sacks, and the loss of Daylon Gordon's complementary 63 yards barely registers against that kind of upgrade. With J.P. Powell and Trelain Maddox still around for depth, the question isn't who carries the ball but how Haynes and Hosley split enough touches to both stay dangerous.
Georgia Tech's leading returning receiver, Jordan Allen, caught just 22 passes for 304 yards last season, so Brent Key went to the portal to solve a room that lost Eric Rivers (47 catches, 671 yards) entirely. Isaiah Fuhrmann arrives from Elon with 907 yards and 9 touchdowns, immediately the most proven target on the roster, while four-star Alabama transfer Jaylen Mbakwe adds pedigree even after limited production there. The offense already ranks 5th nationally in yards per play, but its explosiveness sits at 122nd, and Fuhrmann's big-play résumé is the clearest fix on paper.
Every tight end who caught a pass for Georgia Tech last season is gone, and Brent Key answered by going outside the program entirely. Chris Corbo (45 catches, 516 yards, 4 TD at Dartmouth) and Gavin Harris (36 catches, 514 yards, 1 TD at New Mexico State) arrive with actual production, while returners Blake Ragsdale, Kevin Roche Jr., Connor Roush and Rocco Xerogeanes bring none on record. That leaves Corbo and Harris to carry a passing game that ranked just 31st in yards per game, in an offense that already struggles to hit explosive plays (122nd nationally in that category).
Georgia Tech allowed just 10 sacks a year ago, a line that protected well even if the offense's explosiveness (122nd) lagged behind its efficiency. Seven O-linemen are out the door, including Benjamin Galloway, Tana Alo-Tupuola, Ryan Purves, Harrison Moore and Joe Fusile, so Brent Key is leaning on senior Malachi Carney plus juniors Ethan Mackenny and Jacob Benjamin to anchor whatever comes next. The reinforcements arrive from multiple directions: Joseph Ionata transfers in from Alabama and Markell Samuel from Oklahoma State, while East Coweta twins Courtney and Courtlin Heard sign in as high school recruits at tackle, a group with no track record yet but enough bodies to suggest this rebuild is being taken seriously.
Georgia Tech loses Jordan van den Berg's 42 tackles and 11 TFL along with Akelo Stone's 4 sacks, but the answer is quantity rather than a single replacement. Amontrae Bradford (2.5 sacks, 5.5 TFL) and Brayden Manley (3 sacks) headline five returning ends, and the staff added Jordan Walker and Taje McCoy as proven contributors from Rutgers and Oklahoma State plus four-star Alabama transfer Noah Carter. None of it fixes a front that finished 100th in yards per play allowed and 108th in havoc rate, but this group has the bodies to rotate more than it did replace one departed name with another.
Georgia Tech's defense finished 94th in yards allowed and 108th in havoc rate a year ago, but the linebacker room isn't where that gets fixed by turnover, it gets fixed by reps. Kyle Efford (77 tackles) and E.J. Lightsey (76 tackles) both come back as the tackling anchors, with Cayman Spaulding's 2.5 sacks giving the group its lone real pass-rush juice. The departures were thin production (Tah'j Butler's 34 tackles is the biggest loss), so a class led by Braylon Outlaw and CJ Gamble is developmental depth, not a fix for a unit that has to generate more disruption behind the line in 2026.
Zachary Tobe and Kelvin Hill are the only holdovers with real snaps on the back end, and the numbers explain why Georgia Tech's pass defense gave up 235 yards per game a year ago, 97th nationally, while the unit as a whole ranked 100th in yards per play allowed. Clayton Powell-Lee and Omar Daniels, its two leading tacklers in the secondary, are among 11 defensive backs out the door, so South Florida transfer Jonas Duclona, who racked up 35 tackles and 3 TFL last season, is brought in to start immediately at corner alongside Tobe. The safety room leans on Tae Harris and Fenix Felton to hold things together while four-star signees Trae Stevenson Jr. and Chris Hewitt Jr. develop, and how fast that pass rush and secondary sync up will decide whether Brent Key's defense stops bleeding big plays through the air.
Aidan Birr is the one special-teams unit Brent Key does not have to think about, coming off a 25-of-29 season with a 55-yard long that makes him a weapon rather than a liability. Punting is the real churn: Marshall Nichols and his 48-yard average are gone, and Georgia Tech went to the portal for Rice's Alex Bacchetta, whose 44.7-yard average over 60 punts points to a modest step down in raw distance but a proven, high-volume replacement rather than a guess. With Joshua Taylor also in the mix and Jonathan Genty added as a developmental arm, the punting job settles around Bacchetta while Birr keeps cashing in points.
Georgia Tech turned over its skill-position core wholesale: Haynes King, Eric Rivers, Malik Rutherford and Isiah Canion are all gone, and Michigan transfer Justice Haynes, who ran for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, steps into the backfield behind a retooled receiving corps built around Isaiah Fuhrmann and tight ends Gavin Harris and Chris Corbo. That churn matters more than the 9-4 record suggests, since the underlying numbers say Georgia Tech was flattered last year, its 4-2 mark in one-score games and its win rate against league opponents both running well ahead of what its actual yardage margins supported. With only 36% of production returning and a turnover margin that was actually a hidden positive, expect the record to bend back toward the middle even as Haynes gives the ground game a real identity.
Georgia Tech is trusting a backfield tandem of Malachi Hosley and Michigan transfer Justice Haynes to carry the offense, but neither carries a football through the air, so the season rides on Alberto Mendoza turning 286 passing yards and 5 touchdowns at Indiana into a full-time job replacing Haynes King's 2951 yards. If Mendoza can just manage the offense enough to let Hosley and Haynes do the heavy lifting on the ground, this team's floor stays high, but any regression at quarterback exposes how much production Brent Key has to replace.
Georgia Tech bettors made money at Bobby Dodd, covering at a 67% clip while going 5-1 straight up there, but the road version of this team was a different bet entirely, covering just 40% away from Atlanta despite winning four of five actual games. That split matters more than the 9-4 record suggests, since Brent Key's group has shown it can be trusted to blow out lines against overmatched home opponents but has struggled to cover once favored on the road. The 1-2 mark against the spread in the week after a loss is the flag for 2026, a letdown pattern that sharp bettors will be watching for early in Key's fifth year.
