A roster ranked 28th nationally in talent has no business producing an offense that scored 12.8 points per game, and that gap lands squarely on Luke Fickell heading into year four.
Can Colton Joseph hold up as a full-season starter behind a roster keeping just 41.3% of its offensive production? He inherits almost none of the pieces that made his Old Dominion numbers work, and with the leading returning receiving option gone with Vinny Anthony II's departure, Wisconsin is betting a transfer quarterback can build chemistry with an unproven cast faster than that skill group can crater again. The safer bet is a rocky first half before things settle, since new arms and legs rarely mesh instantly with this little continuity around them.
The projected 6-6 mark leans on stacking wins over Rutgers, Michigan State and Minnesota, but Wisconsin's season gets defined by three games it is favored to lose: the neutral-site clash with Notre Dame, a trip to Penn State and a home date with USC, none better than a coin-flip and the Notre Dame game a near lock against them. Splitting road tests at Iowa, Purdue and Maryland matters just as much as those marquee losses look, since none of those three sit above 58%. Luke Fickell's fourth year comes down to whether a middling-difficulty slate (53rd nationally) yields enough close-game breaks to get back to a bowl after last year's 4-8 collapse.

Wisconsin's 4-8 finish and 2-7 mark in Big Ten play tell a bleak story on the surface, but the underlying power rating of 43rd nationally paints a program that was closer to competitive than its record shows. That gap between results and performance metric is the real story entering year four for Luke Fickell, a staff whose actual on-field quality outpaced the win column in 2025. The 2026 question is whether Wisconsin starts converting that talent into league wins instead of close losses.
Wisconsin's defense was never the issue in 2025, ranking 23rd in yards allowed per game while the offense scored 12.8 points per game, 136th nationally, and turned scoring chances into points at a rate of just 2.28 per opportunity, 135th in the country. That collapse is why Colton Joseph, arriving from Old Dominion off a 2619-yard, 21-touchdown season, is the projected answer at quarterback rather than a lateral move. Wisconsin does not need to fix a defense that stuffed runs at a 21.9% clip, it needs Joseph to find the touchdowns a unit averaging 4.41 yards per play and a 35.4% success rate could never produce on its own.
Wisconsin scrapped its quarterback room entirely rather than trust a unit that produced a 12.8 points-per-game offense, and Colton Joseph arrives from Old Dominion as the clear answer after throwing for 2,619 yards and 21 touchdowns there. Danny O'Neil's 5-interception 2025 and Hunter Simmons' departure after seven picks explain why the staff went outside the building, and Ryan Hopkins and Deuce Adams give Joseph competent depth without threatening his job. Joseph does not need to be spectacular, just accurate enough to lift an attack that ranked 132nd in passing yards per game and 126th on third down.
Wisconsin's ground game produced just 118 yards per game and 4.41 yards per play a year ago, numbers that made a total overhaul of the room unavoidable. Abu Sama III arrives from Iowa State off a 732-yard, 5-touchdown season and slots in as the clear lead back, pushing Darrion Dupree (363 yards) and Bryan Jackson II (123 yards, 4 TD) into complementary roles rather than lead-man duty. Nate Palmer adds further depth off his 139-yard TCU season, but Sama is the one piece capable of actually moving a rushing attack that ranked 115th nationally.
Wisconsin didn't just lose production at receiver, it lost the entire room, with Vinny Anthony II, Trech Kekahuna, Jayden Ballard and Eugene Hilton Jr. all gone from an offense that scored 12.8 points a game. The answer came almost entirely through the portal: Jaylon Domingeaux arrives off a 52-catch, 857-yard, 11-touchdown season at Southeastern Louisiana, and Shamar Rigby adds 351 yards of his own from Oklahoma State, giving Fickell two proven pass-catchers to plug into an offense that ranked 132nd in passing yards per game. Chris Brooks Jr. is the lone returning target with real volume, so this group's ceiling rides on how fast Domingeaux and Rigby translate their production against Big Ten competition.
Wisconsin lost its entire tight end production, including Lance Mason's 30 catches and Jackson Acker's 8, off an offense that finished 135th in yards per play, so the position rebuilds almost from scratch. Grant Stec is the only returner with catches on his résumé, just 5 for 52 yards, which means the transfer haul carries real weight: Jacob Harris arrives from Bowling Green with 19 grabs and 5 touchdowns, and Ryan Schwendeman brings 191 yards from Southern Illinois. Harris projects as the primary receiving threat at the position, and how quickly he and Schwendeman mesh with a passing game that ranked 132nd nationally will decide whether tight end becomes a strength or another symptom of the same stagnant attack.
A line that produced 4.41 yards per play (135th) and let opponents wreck 32.3% of third downs (126th) got an overhaul, not a patch job. Nine linemen are out the door, including Riley Mahlman and Joey Okla, and Luke Fickell rebuilt the room with transfers Austin Kawecki (Oklahoma State), PJ Wilkins (Ole Miss) and Blake Cherry (Arkansas) at tackle, plus four-star high school signee Brady Bekkenhuis. Whatever continuity exists runs through juniors Evan Brown and Lucas Simmons-Johansson, but with no depth chart clarity here, this projects as a rebuild that has to find its combination on the fly rather than a group picking up where a bad 2025 left off.
Wisconsin's returning defensive line combined for single-digit tackle totals a year ago, so the position group arriving this fall is essentially built from scratch through the portal. Junior Poyser (30 tackles, 4 sacks, 5 TFL at Buffalo) and Justus Boone (28 tackles, 1.5 TFL at Arkansas) replace the departed production of Ben Barten and Brandon Lane, while Hammond Russell IV adds pass-rush juice off his 2 sacks at West Virginia. A run defense that ranked 15th in rushing yards allowed per game last season has the infrastructure to hold that ground, but a havoc rate of just 12.9% means these newcomers need to generate disruption this group hasn't shown in some time.
Wisconsin loses its top edge disruptor in Darryl Peterson (6.5 sacks, 11.5 TFL) and run-stopper Christian Alliegro, but the middle of this defense stays intact behind Mason Posa (57 tackles, 4 sacks) and Cooper Catalano (56 tackles, 5 TFL), both back for another year of anchoring a front that ranked 15th nationally against the run. The pass rush production walking out the door is real, and Kansas transfer Jon Jon Kamara arrives with modest but real snaps to help offset it rather than replace it outright. Wisconsin's linebacker corps was never the problem behind a defense that finished 40th in points allowed per game, and keeping Posa and Catalano together gives Fickell a foundation even as the havoc numbers around them need to climb.
Matthew Jung's 49 tackles anchor a secondary that otherwise loses its top three safeties from a group that ranked just 120th in havoc rate a year ago, a real problem for a defense that gave up 218 passing yards per game. Fickell went to the portal to patch it, landing Marvin Burks Jr. from Missouri, who matches Jung's 49 tackles from last season, plus Javan Robinson from Arizona State to pair with returning corner Eric Fletcher Jr. The bet here is that Burks and Robinson start immediately and push the pass defense closer to its run-stopping form, since the back seven simply was not creating enough disruptive plays to complement a run defense that ranked 15th in yards allowed per carry.
Sean West's leg is the one certainty here, back after a 47.4-yard average that outclassed most Big Ten specialists, and Wisconsin will lean on him to flip field position for a team that went 2-7 in conference. The bigger void is at placekicker, where Nathanial Vakos and his 7-of-11 clip are gone with nobody on the roster having kicked a college field goal, leaving Gavin Lahm and Brady Melum to sort out an untested job. Add a long snapper competition between incumbent Andrew Goodman and Toledo transfer James Roe, and this unit's floor depends entirely on West carrying the load while the placekicking side proves itself from scratch.
Fickell blew up the offense this cycle, and the headline move is Colton Joseph taking over at quarterback after throwing for 2,619 yards and 21 touchdowns at Old Dominion, a clear upgrade over the departed Hunter Simmons' 7-interception season. Wisconsin also imported its skill corps almost wholesale: Abu Sama III arrives from Iowa State to replace Dilin Jones' 300 rushing yards, while Jaylon Domingeaux (52 catches, 857 yards, 11 TD at Southeastern Louisiana) and Shamar Rigby take over for Vinny Anthony II and Trech Kekahuna. With 33 transfers in against a modest recruiting class, this roster is being remade through the portal rather than high school recruiting, and Joseph's accuracy will decide whether that bet pays off faster than the 78-ranked class suggests it should.
Wisconsin handed its offense to Colton Joseph, who threw for 2,619 yards and 21 touchdowns at Old Dominion, over returner Danny O'Neil, who managed just 5 touchdowns against 5 interceptions in limited action. That gap in production is the whole bet for 2026 Fickell needs Joseph's efficiency to translate against Big Ten defenses, and with Abu Sama III joining Darrion Dupree in the backfield, a competent passing game is what turns those rushing lanes into real drives instead of stalled ones.
The gap between Wisconsin's ledger and its market performance is the real story here. A team that went 0-5 straight up away from Madison still covered the number 3-2 on the road and 3-1 as a road underdog, and against ranked opponents Luke Fickell's group covered five of seven times despite losing five of those games outright. That pattern points to a roster that keeps games competitive longer than the scoreboard suggests, which matters heading into 2026 as bettors price Wisconsin as live dogs rather than a team getting blown off the field.
