Joey McGuire built a top-10-rated program with a defense that allowed just 11.8 points per game, and now hands the keys to Will Hammond with enough talent around him, No. 29 nationally, that the offense should not miss a beat even with less than half its production back.
Does Will Hammond keep Texas Tech's offense from backsliding while a defense returning under half its production rebuilds around him? With only 54% of the offense back and even less on defense, the margin for a shaky transition is thin, but McGuire has stacked enough talent that Hammond should be able to manage games rather than force them. Expect the Red Raiders to lean on structure and defense early while Hammond grows into the job instead of carrying it outright.
Coming off a 12-2 season and an 8-1 conference mark, Texas Tech's 2026 slate ranks just 68th in difficulty, and the numbers back that up: nine games sit at 81% or better to win, including a soft nonconference stretch against Abilene Christian and Sam Houston. The season turns on three road trips, at Baylor (75%), at Colorado (79%) and at Cincinnati (79%), the only games projected inside single-digit toss-up range. Win two of those three and an 11-1 projection with a guaranteed bowl trip looks less like a ceiling and more like the floor for Joey McGuire's fifth year.

Joey McGuire's fourth year produced a Big 12 title-game win, but the underlying math says the 12-2 mark ran hotter than the roster. A turnover margin of +14 over 14 games and an offense that needed just 11.7 yards per point (against a 14.1 league median) are exactly the kind of efficiency spikes that rarely repeat, while a defense that let opponents earn 21.9 yards per point did the quieter, sturdier work. With 54% of production back, McGuire is not rebuilding so much as bracing for the parts of 2025 that were closer to a hot streak than a template.
The number that actually explains a 12-2 season is 11.8 points allowed per game, with a havoc rate leading the country and a run defense giving up just 70 yards a game. That identity does not need to be replaced, it needs a quarterback who does not put it in bad spots, and that job projects to Will Hammond, who threw for 668 yards and 7 touchdowns against 3 interceptions in his look last year. Everything about 2026 is really a bet that Hammond can be efficient enough that Texas Tech never has to outscore anybody, because this roster is built to win 17-13.
Behren Morton's 2780 yards and 22 touchdowns walk out the door with him, and Texas Tech replaces that production with a camp battle rather than a proven arm. Will Hammond, who threw for 668 yards and 7 scores in relief work, takes the first-team reps as the front-runner, but Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis (493 yards, 3 TD, 4 INT) and true freshman Stephen Cannon are in the mix, so the job is not settled. A top-10 scoring attack a year ago now rides on Hammond turning spot duty into a full season without the interception issues that dogged him in limited snaps.
Cameron Dickey (1,138 yards, 14 TD) and J'Koby Williams (866 yards, 6 TD) both come back to anchor a backfield that already powered a 39.4 points-per-game attack, so Texas Tech isn't rebuilding here, it's protecting a strength. The addition of four-star New Boston product Ashton Rowden gives Joey McGuire another ball-carrier to rotate in behind two proven starters rather than a need to fill. With the passing game (278 yards per game, 17th nationally) drawing attention, Dickey and Williams should keep finding room even though the ground game ranked just 31st in yards per game a year ago.
Texas Tech rebuilt its receiving corps almost entirely through the portal after losing Caleb Douglas and Reggie Virgil's combined production. Coy Eakin's 653 yards anchor the room, but the headline addition is Jalen Jones, who caught 47 passes for 1,119 yards and 9 touchdowns at Alabama State, joined by Kenny Johnson (47 catches, 658 yards at Pittsburgh) and Auburn transfer Malcolm Simmons. That much proven volume arriving at once, layered onto an offense that already ranked 7th in scoring, points toward this unit getting more explosive rather than rebuilding.
Terrance Carter Jr. is the engine here, coming off 55 catches for 624 yards and 5 touchdowns as a matchup problem in a passing attack that ranked 17th nationally. Behind him, Texas Tech added Nevada transfer Jett Carpenter, who caught 35 balls for 374 yards last year and gives Joey McGuire a proven second option rather than a projectless depth piece, while four-star Matt Ludwig arrives as a developmental long-term add. Losing Johncarlos Miller II barely dents the room given Carter's workload, so this group looks deeper and more battle-tested than the one that helped power a 39.4-point-per-game attack in 2025.
Sacks allowed sat at 27 last season, and this room brings back most of its bodies to clean that up, with seniors Sheridan Wilson and Cash Cleveland anchoring a group of 16 returners against just four departures in Will Jados, Jurrien Loftin, Davion Carter and Vinny Sciury. Joey McGuire did not stand pat, though, adding a pair of blue-chip tackles in Felix Ojo and high school signee Bryce Gilmore, plus Louisville transfer Jordan Church to bolster the interior. With that much continuity up front, the bet here is that Texas Tech pushes its 184 rushing yards per game higher rather than treading water, so long as the newcomers push the pecking order instead of just adding depth.
Lee Hunter's gone, but Joey McGuire didn't just replace bodies, he stacked the room. A.J. Holmes Jr. (4.5 sacks, 10 TFL) anchors a front that led the nation in havoc rate, and now it adds Adam Trick, who brought 8 sacks and 12 TFL from Miami (OH), plus five-star edge LaDamion Guyton, the headline get of the incoming class. With Trey White and Julien Laventure also arriving off winning TFL numbers at San Diego State and Akron, this unit isn't rebuilding around its 70 rushing yards allowed per game, it's reloading for more of the same disruption.
The pass-rush production that fueled a nation-leading havoc rate walks out the door with Jacob Rodriguez, David Bailey and Romello Height, who combined for a staggering share of last year's sacks and TFLs off the edge. Ben Roberts (88 tackles) and John Curry (73 tackles, 3.5 TFL) anchor the middle and keep the run defense credible, but replacing that lost disruption falls to transfers Austin Romaine, who racked up 7 TFL at Kansas State, and Corey Platt Jr., who added 3 sacks at Houston. This group can still be stout against the run, but the top-shelf pressure that made Texas Tech's defense elite in 2025 is not walking back through that door with the same names attached.
Cole Wisniewski's 75 tackles and 5.5 TFL walk out the door, but Brenden Jordan (59 tackles) and Brice Pollock (47 tackles, 4 TFL) anchor a group that finished top in the country in havoc rate and yards per play allowed a year ago. The reinforcements come from two directions: Davin Martin arrives from UTSA with 26 tackles of proof already on tape, while four-star signee S'Vioarean Martin headlines a high school haul that also includes Donovan Webb, Aaron Bradshaw and Luke Hamilton. With that much returning production up front in the back end, Texas Tech is built to stay a top-tier pass defense rather than rebuild one.
Stone Harrington anchors this unit after going 22 of 28 with a 58-yard long and 106 points, giving Texas Tech a proven leg it didn't have to replace. The punting job is churning though, with Jack Burgess gone and Will Karoll arriving from UCLA to bring his 44 punts and 43.5-yard average into the competition with incumbent Ian Hershey. Long snapper turns over too, as Rylan Vagana and incoming Reed Price both carry no prior stats, but with Harrington still booting field goals, the specialists' shakiest link is punt duty, not placekicking.
Behren Morton's 2780 yards walk out the door, and Will Hammond, who threw for 668 yards and 7 touchdowns in relief last season, is projected to take over an offense that got almost entirely rebuilt around him. Gone are Caleb Douglas and Reggie Virgil, replaced by a wave of portal receivers in Jalen Jones (1119 yards at Alabama State), Kenny Johnson and four-star Auburn transfer Malcolm Simmons, plus Tulsa import Kirk Francis pushing at quarterback. Defensively, losing David Bailey's 14.5 sacks and Jacob Rodriguez's 122 tackles is real production to replace, but Miami (OH) edge Adam Trick and San Diego State's Trey White arrive with 8 and 7 sacks of their own, making this a near-total roster transplant rather than a tweak to a 12-2 team.
Behren Morton's 2780 yards and 22 touchdowns walk out the door, leaving Will Hammond, who threw for just 668 yards in limited action, projected to run an offense that just went 12-2. Cameron Dickey and J'Koby Williams give him a ground game to lean on and Malcolm Simmons arrives from Auburn to stretch the field, but how Hammond handles the jump from backup snaps to full-time starter determines whether Texas Tech's offense stays explosive or takes a step back.
Texas Tech didn't just win in 2025, it printed money for anyone backing them, covering 11-2-1 overall and going a perfect 6-0-1 at home as either side of the number. Joey McGuire's group was even better with a target on its back, covering 8-1 in conference play and 3-1 against ranked opponents, proof this wasn't a team padding a soft schedule. That home cover rate is the number Vegas has to solve in 2026, and until Lubbock proves otherwise, the smart money keeps siding with the Raiders as favorites.
