Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3Mountain West · Jay Sawvel, year 3 · 4-8 last season · No. 121 in our FBS ratings
Jay Sawvel is rebuilding almost from scratch with just 28% production returning and a roster ranked 117th in raw talent, so Tyler Hughes has to lift this offense out of the 132nd-ranked scoring performance with a nearly all-new supporting cast around him.
Can Tyler Hughes win consistently with almost nobody around him who did it last year? With offensive returning production sitting at 26.9% and the defense not much better at 28.3%, Hughes will spend most weeks throwing to and handing off to players who have no track record at this level. The answer leans toward growing pains rather than instant results, since a clean-slate supporting cast usually costs a transfer quarterback more than his own accuracy can make up.
Wyoming's national schedule difficulty rank of 127 masks a slate that is genuinely winnable under Jay Sawvel in year three, with seven true toss-up games against Colorado State, Central Michigan, San José State, Northern Illinois, Air Force, UTEP and UConn deciding whether this team hits its projected 5-7. The real separators are the road trip to UNLV (14% win), the home date with Hawai'i (30%) and the trip to North Dakota State (33%), three games where Wyoming is the underdog on paper and needs to steal at least one to have any margin for error elsewhere. Splitting those seven coin-flip games four ways gets Wyoming to its projected mark, so the season is decided less by the ranked-caliber tests than by whether Sawvel's team can just win its share of the toss-ups.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.

The 4-8 mark buried a team that outplayed its record in conference play, and a defense that made opponents earn every point (16.8 yards per point allowed) while an inefficient offense (19.7 yards per point) left points on the field points to real correction in 2026. Tyler Hughes arrives from William & Mary to run the offense, and a defense already built to bend without breaking gives Jay Sawvel a floor to work from even against a brutal 127th-ranked schedule. The 5-7 projection undersells this group; the turnover margin and close-game results were the unlucky parts of 2025, and the underlying numbers say Wyoming climbs closer to bowl contention than the ledger suggests.
Jay Sawvel's third year follows a 4-8 finish that included a 2-6 slide through Mountain West play, and the power rankings back up the eye test, with Wyoming sitting at No. 121 nationally. That combination of a losing conference mark and a bottom-tier ranking means 2026 is about proving last season was the outlier, not the trend. There is no roster name here to hide behind, this is Sawvel's program now, and the record has to move before the ranking will.
Wyoming's defense held up its end, allowing 20.5 points per game, but an offense that managed just 16.0 points and a 33.7% third-down rate buried the Cowboys at 4-8. Tyler Hughes arrives from William & Mary with 2330 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against only 3 interceptions, a clean decision-maker replacing whatever quarterback play produced a 38.1% success rate and 1.17 explosiveness mark a year ago. If Hughes can just make the offense functional, Jay Sawvel's defense already gives this team a floor to build on.
Wyoming didn't run back Kaden Anderson's 1,971-yard, 12-touchdown season, and instead handed the job to William & Mary transfer Tyler Hughes, who threw for 2,330 yards and 20 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions last year. That kind of accuracy is the fix this offense needed: a passing attack that ranked 113th nationally and a unit that converted third downs at just 33.7% has to find a quarterback who doesn't turn drives into turnovers, and Hughes cleaning that up matters more than any raw yardage total. Landon Sims, Mason Drube and Gage Brook remain as depth pieces with modest or no track record, but this is Hughes's offense to run, and Wyoming's floor in 2026 rises or falls with whether his William & Mary numbers translate against Mountain West defenses.
Wyoming didn't lose its leading rusher so much as its entire committee, with Sam Scott and Terron Kellman both gone from a ground game that already ranked just 100th nationally in rushing yards per game. Samuel Harris returns off 552 yards on the ground, but the Cowboys went out and bought reinforcements, bringing in Markell Holman from Western Illinois off a 999-yard, 7-touchdown season and Diore Hubbard from West Virginia. With an offense that scored at a 132nd-ranked clip and converted scoring chances as poorly as anyone in the country, Holman's between-the-tackles production is the clearest lever Jay Sawvel has to change that math in 2026.
No one on this roster caught more than 17 passes in 2025, and Wyoming is losing the four players who combined for the closest thing to a passing game it had, including Chris Durr Jr.'s 46 catches and 513 yards. That production has to come from somewhere, and the returning group of Deion DeBlanc, Eric Richardson, Jackson Holman and Charlie Coenen is a patchwork of low-volume contributors rather than a proven target. Four incoming freshmen, led by Jordan Styles, arrive with no college stats to lean on, which means an offense that finished 127th in points per scoring opportunity is betting on unproven pieces to fix a unit that never stretched the field.
Wyoming's entire tight end production room walked out the door with John Michael Gyllenborg's 24 catches and Evan Svoboda's 11, leaving Kyle Frendt (2 catches) and Isaac Schoenfeld (1 catch) as the only returnees who have caught a pass. That gap gets filled by Central Arkansas transfer Tyler Siddons, whose 4 catches for 37 yards are modest but still more receiving production than anyone left on the roster, alongside untested freshmen Colin Ford and Ish Muhammad. For an offense that ranked 127th in points per scoring opportunity, replacing Gyllenborg's red-zone role with an unproven group is a real problem, not a footnote.
Wyoming's line gave up only 19 sacks last season, but that shield did little for an offense mired at 4.89 yards per play and 132nd in scoring. Jay Sawvel keeps the bulk of that group intact behind junior Rex Johnsen and sophomores Brandt Rice, Jake Davies and Nathan Geiger, while five three-star additions, led by Jonathan Pearcy from Liberty and tackle Pierce Decker out of Poudre, push the room for competition rather than replace departed starters Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, Wes King and Luke Sandy outright. With that much continuity up front, the real fix for 2026 is scheme and explosiveness, not simply finding bodies.
Wyoming's front loses its best disruptor in Ben Florentine (33 tackles, 4 sacks, 6 TFL) and Chisom Ifeanyi (19 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2.5 TFL), the two players most responsible for whatever pressure this defense generated in a season that ranked 123rd in sacks and 120th in tackles for loss. Jayden Williams (20 tackles, 2.5 TFL) and Esaia Bogar (12 tackles, 1 sack) are the only returners with real production, so the rebuild leans on newcomers rather than experience: Jack Dunkley arrives from Duquesne with actual game tape (4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL), while high school signees Dante Bruley and Mason Wright join as edge prospects with no college snaps yet. That gap between name recognition and proven pass-rush juice means Wyoming's havoc numbers are more likely to stay stuck near the back of the pack than jump forward in 2026.
Ethan Stuhlsatz's 40 tackles are the most experience on the roster at linebacker, and that says everything about the hole Wyoming has to fill after Brayden Johnson (74 tackles, 5 TFL) and Evan Eller (62 tackles, 2 sacks, 7 TFL) both left. Gary Rutherford's 12 tackles are the only other returning production of note, meaning Cooper Mailand and Parker Moore, neither with a stat line yet, likely have to play real snaps right away. Wyoming's defense was already thin at getting into the backfield (120th in tackles for loss, 119th in havoc rate), and losing its two most disruptive linebackers to replacements without a track record makes that problem harder to fix in 2026, even with a defense that held up well against the pass a year ago.
Wyoming's pass defense finished 14th nationally in yards allowed per game, and that strength returns intact behind Jones Thomas (46 tackles) and Tyson Deen, with Desman Hearns (28 tackles, 3 TFL) adding a physical edge at safety. The bigger swing is up front and in the back seven's ability to disrupt plays, an area that ranked 119th in havoc rate a year ago, so USC transfer Anthony Beavers Jr. and Jacksonville State transfer Travis Franklin Jr. (25 tackles) were brought in to add speed and range rather than just replace departed tacklers Andrew Johnson and Dainsus Miller. If Franklin Jr. and Beavers Jr. push the safety rotation, Wyoming's coverage numbers should hold, but the unit still needs takeaways it did not create in 2025.
Erik Sandvik going 6 of 11 last season isn't the profile of a settled leg, and Wyoming didn't just let it ride, Keelan Anderson is back too after going 0 of 1, so the placekicking job stays genuinely contested rather than handed to the incumbent. Bart Edmiston is the stabilizing piece, his 65 punts at a 46.1 average give Jay Sawvel a real weapon in field position battles. Long snapper is a fresh question with Nathan Curry arriving from North Alabama to replace the departed Carson York, though neither he nor returner Charlie Houston has logged stats yet.
Wyoming replaced Kaden Anderson's turnover-prone 1971 yards and 10 interceptions by going to the portal for William & Mary's Tyler Hughes, who threw for 2330 yards with 20 touchdowns against just 3 picks last season and is the settled starter under center. The bigger swing is the backfield behind him, where Markell Holman (999 rushing yards, 7 TD from Western Illinois) and Diore Hubbard (335 yards, 4 TD from West Virginia) arrive to replace Sam Scott and Terron Kellman entirely. With a 114th-ranked recruiting class, this roster is being built through the portal rather than high school pipelines, and Hughes' efficiency numbers make him the clearest upgrade Jay Sawvel has added in year three.
Wyoming swapped Kaden Anderson's turnover-prone 12-TD, 10-INT year for Tyler Hughes, who threw 20 touchdowns against just 3 picks at William & Mary, and that upgrade in ball security is the single biggest lever on this offense. Pair him with Markell Holman, who ran for 999 yards and 7 scores at Western Illinois, and Sawvel has real reason to expect more possessions and fewer giveaways than the 4-8 team that stumbled through 2025.
Wyoming bettors got burned chasing Jay Sawvel's team away from Laramie, where the Cowboys went 1-5 straight up and covered just 33% of the time, including a putrid 20% mark as road underdogs. The market still respects them at home, where Wyoming covered as a favorite at a 67% clip, a split steep enough that the smart play is simple: back Sawvel's crew in Laramie and fade them everywhere else. Coming off a 4-8 season with a 2-6 conference mark, this team gave backers almost nothing away from home, and until that road number moves, there is no reason to trust it in 2026.
