Morgan Scalley inherits a program that scored at a top-five clip and finished 31st in the power rankings with a roster built more on Dampier's arm than blue-chip depth, so the real test is whether that offense can carry a defense replacing nearly half its production while the coaching voice changes for the first time.
Can Utah's defense hold up with barely 47.3% of its production back? The offense returns Dampier and 72.2% of its production, giving Scalley a stable base to lean on while the defensive side absorbs the bulk of the turnover, and that imbalance points to a unit that wins more shootouts than it does defensive struggles in 2026. Expect the scoreboard, not the stat sheet, to carry Utah through the growing pains on that side of the ball.
Morgan Scalley's first year at the wheel comes with a middle-of-the-pack slate (60th in difficulty) that still delivers a brutal closing stretch. Utah is no better than a coin flip in three straight true tests, at BYU essentially even, on the road against Arizona at 47%, and at TCU at 49%, the exact stretch that will decide whether 2025's 11-2 run was real progress or Scalley inherits a step back. Everything else on the board, from Idaho and Utah State at home to a road trip to Colorado, sets up as manageable, but how Utah handles that BYU-Arizona-TCU gauntlet is the whole season.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Morgan Scalley takes over a program whose 11-2 mark flattered it more than the tape did. The offense needed just 11.7 yards per point against league opponents, well under the 14.1 median, a scoring efficiency rate that rarely holds up two years running, while the defense let opponents cover 18.9 yards per point, bending without breaking rather than actually stopping anyone. A turnover margin of plus-6 over 13 games papered over both trends, and none of that is the kind of thing a new staff can bank on repeating in 2026.
Devon Dampier's return is the whole story here: 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns through the air last season, attached to an offense that ran for 267 yards per game, second nationally. That identity does not need reinvention in 2026, it needs repetition, and with Dampier back the Utes keep the nation's second-best scoring efficiency (5.01 points per opportunity) and a third-down conversion rate (52.9%) that let them dictate tempo all year. The passing numbers (217 yards per game, 82nd) were never the point, the run-first math behind an 11-2 season is, and Dampier's return means that math stays intact.
Devon Dampier's return, after throwing for 2490 yards and 24 touchdowns against just 5 picks, is the reason Utah's offense doesn't have to rebuild around a name change under new coach Morgan Scalley. The bigger question is whether the passing game ever catches up to the ground production, given Utah ranked 2nd nationally in rushing yards per game but just 82nd in passing yards per game a year ago. Backup Byrd Ficklin and transfer Brandon Rose give Dampier insurance, but this offense's ceiling still runs through him extending drives at a 52.9% third-down clip rather than needing to become a different kind of passer.
Wayshawn Parker's 981 yards were the foundation of a rushing attack that finished 2nd nationally in yards per game, and with NaQuari Rogers gone, the touchdown work Rogers provided has to come from somewhere else in the room. Daniel Bray and Nate Johnson both return with modest but real production, while San José State transfer Steve Chavez-Soto arrives with 448 yards and 7 scores already on his resume, giving Morgan Scalley a proven complement rather than an unproven backup. The scoring punch stays intact as long as Parker keeps piling up carries and Chavez-Soto converts short-yardage chances the way he did before transferring in.
Utah's leading returning wideout caught 15 balls for 280 yards, which tells the real story: last year's 41.3 points per game came almost entirely on the ground, with the passing game ranked just 82nd nationally despite a top-2 rushing attack. That's why the transfer haul matters so much, with Braden Pegan (60 catches, 925 yards at Utah State) and Kyri Shoels (59 catches, 768 yards at San José State) arriving to give Utah actual proven volume on the outside. If either approaches those numbers in the Big 12, Utah's offense stops being one-dimensional and becomes the explosive, balanced attack its rushing and third-down numbers already suggest it can be.
Utah's tight end room lost its entire receiving identity when Dallen Bentley (48 catches, 620 yards, 6 TD) and JJ Buchanan (26 catches, 427 yards, 5 TD) departed, and the incumbents left behind combined for almost nothing through the air last year. That gap gets filled by transfer Noah Bennee, who caught 23 passes for 264 yards at Weber State, while Hunter Andrews returns as the run-game piece off his 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. With Oklahoma State transfer Will Monney adding another receiving option, this position group looks built to support Utah's ground-and-pound attack rather than replicate the departed duo's production through the air.
A line that helped average 267 rushing yards per game (2nd nationally) and allowed just 15 sacks now loses Spencer Fano, Caleb Lomu, Kamilo Raass and six others to the tune of eight total departures, wiping out most of the group that made those numbers possible. Morgan Scalley leans on seniors Alex Harrison and Solatoa Moea'i to anchor whatever comes together up front, while five-star tackle Kelvin Obot and four-star Mataalii Benjamin arrive as the kind of high-end signings meant to backfill a line this decorated. Given how much production walked out the door, Utah's rushing attack is more likely to take a step back in 2026 than replicate last year's output.
John Henry Daley (11.5 sacks, 17.5 TFL) and Logan Fano (4.5 sacks, 7.5 TFL) are both gone, and no returning lineman comes close to that production, with Kash Dillon's 3.5 sacks the high mark among holdovers. Utah went to the portal hard to cover it, landing Ethan Day from North Texas (54 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7 TFL) and Jireh Moe from San José State, with Lucas Samsula arriving from Wyoming as another portal addition up front. The run defense already ranked 109th in yards allowed per game, so Day's disruption has to translate immediately or that number gets worse before it gets better.
Johnathan Hall is the one holdover with real production, coming off 63 tackles and 6 TFL, but the group around him looks nothing like the one that helped hold opponents to 180 rushing yards a game at 109th nationally in that category. Lander Barton and Levani Damuni, who combined for the bulk of the tackle numbers behind Hall, are both gone, leaving Trey Reynolds and Elijah Elliss to jump from complementary roles into every-down responsibility. Morgan Scalley inherits a defense that still finished 17th in points allowed per game, but the front seven's answer for replacing Barton's downhill instincts is largely unproven, with three-star arrivals Preston Pitts and LaGary Mitchell needing time before they factor into a run defense that was already a soft spot.
Jackson Bennee's 62 tackles and 4 TFL anchor a secondary that finished 17th in passing yards allowed per game, but nine defensive backs are gone, including Tao Johnson and Smith Snowden, which means Morgan Scalley is patching four of five spots around one proven safety. Elijah Davis is the only returning corner with real snaps to lean on, so the portal hauls of James Chenault (32 tackles at South Florida) and Elijah Reed (44 tackles, two TFL at Akron) are being counted on to start immediately rather than develop. With that much turnover at corner, the run defense's 109th-ranked mark becomes secondary to whether Chenault and Reed can hold up on the outside while Nate Ritchie and Nate Tilmon settle in behind them.
Dillon Curtis is the answer at placekicker, and it is not close: 11 of 15 field goals with a 54-yard long and 101 points dwarfs Tanner Cragun's 6-of-8, 18-point ledger, so Morgan Scalley should hand him the job outright rather than split reps. Orion Phillips returns after a 42.3-yard average on 38 punts, giving Utah a steady leg to flip field position while the coaching staff sorts out a new long snapper behind Logan Castor with Charlie King gone. The specialist mix is set up to be a strength, not a question mark, entering Scalley's first season in charge.
Utah's roster turned over almost entirely at the skill positions, but the one constant is the most important piece: Devon Dampier, back after throwing for 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns, gives Morgan Scalley a proven engine while everything around him gets rebuilt. Ryan Davis, Dallen Bentley, JJ Buchanan and NaQuari Rogers all left behind real production, so the Utah State pipeline of Braden Pegan (60 catches, 925 yards) and Steve Chavez-Soto (448 yards, 7 TD) has to replace touchdowns fast, not just catches. Up front, John Henry Daley's 11.5 sacks and Lander Barton's tackle production also walk out the door, leaving portal addition Ethan Day (4.5 sacks, 7 TFL) to fill a real gap in a defense that otherwise returns its identity around Dampier's continuity at quarterback.
Devon Dampier is a known quantity after throwing for 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns, so the swing piece is Braden Pegan, the Utah State transfer who has to replace Ryan Davis as Dampier's top target. Pegan caught 60 balls for 925 yards and 5 scores a year ago, and if that production translates against Big 12 corners, Utah's passing game loses nothing from the departure.
Bettors who rode Utah last year got paid almost anywhere they looked, a 9-3-1 overall cover mark that included an 80% clip as road underdogs and a perfect 2-0 backing the week after a loss. That kind of profile under Morgan Scalley, now heading into his own year one atop the program, points to a team that consistently outplayed its number rather than just its opponent. The one soft spot was against ranked competition, a flat 2-2 against the spread, which is the gap oddsmakers will lean on until Utah proves it can cover against the field's best, not just the rest.
