Mountain West · 4-8 in 2025Wyoming Cowboys5-7 projected · fpi #121 · 28% returningJay Sawvel, Yr 3ACC · Mario Cristobal, year 5 · 13-3 last season · No. 7 in our FBS ratings
A defense that allowed just 14.8 points per game returns less than half its production, but with a top-15 talent base and a power rating of 7 entering 2026, Mario Cristobal has built enough of a floor that Miami's ceiling is set by Mensah's passing game, not by whoever replaces the pieces on defense.
Can Darian Mensah produce at the same level against ACC defenses that will scheme specifically to stop him? Miami is betting yes, and the low interception total he posted at Duke against a lighter workload of turnover risk suggests a quarterback who protects the ball well enough to survive an offense that returns under half its production around him. With so little proven besides the man throwing it, Mensah's ball security becomes the swing factor for how far this roster can stretch.
A 13-win season bought Miami a soft-looking slate ranked 48th in difficulty, but the trip to Notre Dame is the outlier that will decide whether 2026 reads as a breakthrough or a near-miss, with the Hurricanes projected as underdogs there. Clemson on the road follows as the other true coin-flip, and a trip to North Carolina rounds out the stretch that separates this team from a clean run. Everything else, including Florida State and Pittsburgh at home, projects as should-win business, so Mario Cristobal's fifth year gets measured almost entirely by how Miami handles those three road tests.

The record says Miami arrived, capped by beating Ohio State 24-14 and Ole Miss 31-27 before falling 21-27 to Indiana. But the efficiency numbers tell a different story: an offense that needed just 13.1 yards per point against league opponents, well below the 14.1 median, is the least repeatable part of that run, and a defense giving up scores every 19.9 yards is more bend-don't-break than dominant. Add a plus-10 turnover margin over 16 games, historically the first thing to regress, and Mario Cristobal's fourth year at the wheel looks more fragile than the 13-3 finish suggests.
Miami's defense already carries this program, a group that led the country in sacks with 50 and allowed just 14.8 points a game, so the real 2026 swing factor sits on the other side of the ball. Darian Mensah arrives from Duke off a 3,973-yard, 34-touchdown season to replace last year's passing attack, and he's stepping into an offense that moved the ball efficiently but rarely broke it open, ranking 126th in explosiveness on successful plays. If Mensah can turn all those manageable third downs (Miami ranked 19th there) into more chunk plays, this roster has the defensive floor to make a real leap rather than just another solid year.
Miami swapped one 30-touchdown passer for another, sending Carson Beck out the door and bringing in Darian Mensah from Duke, who threw for 3973 yards and 34 scores last season with just 6 interceptions. That upgrade in ball security matters for an offense that already moved the ball at 6.11 yards per play but stalled out on explosive plays, ranking 126th in explosiveness on successful snaps. Mensah does not have to fix the whole attack, but if he turns Miami's efficient, high-success-rate approach into more chunk plays downfield, this offense stops leaving points on the table behind its 4.36 points per scoring opportunity mark.
Mark Fletcher Jr. turned in 1192 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall, and with CharMar Brown (460 yards, 7 TD) and Girard Pringle Jr. (375 yards, 4 TD) both back, this room returns almost fully intact behind him. The name to watch is Javian Mallory, a four-star arrival from West Boca Raton who joins a backfield that already has its workhorse settled. Miami's ground game ranked just 77th in rushing yards per game a year ago despite the volume Fletcher provided, so the 2026 question is less about who touches the ball and more about whether this deep, proven group can turn steady carries into more explosive gains.
Malachi Toney's 109-catch, 1,211-yard season already made him one of the ACC's top targets, and Miami didn't stand pat around him: Cooper Barkate arrives from Duke off a 72-catch, 1,106-yard year and Cam Vaughn brings 35 grabs and 540 yards from West Virginia, replacing the production Keelan Marion and CJ Daniels took with them. That trio, plus four-star signees Somourian Wingo and Milan Parris, gives Mario Cristobal a deeper, more explosive perimeter than the one that finished 126th in explosiveness on successful plays a year ago. The talent upgrade is real; whether it fixes the big-play problem is the actual swing factor for this offense in 2026.
Elija Lofton (23 catches, 218 yards, 3 TD) becomes the clear top target at tight end with Alex Bauman's 18 grabs off the books, and the modest career numbers around him mean Miami's passing game leans on him doing more, not less, in 2026. Four-star arrivals Gavin Mueller and Israel Briggs give Mario Cristobal fresh bodies to develop, but neither has caught a college pass, so the position's immediate production still runs through Lofton. Miami's offense already hums (35th in scoring, 41st through the air), and a bigger workload for Lofton is a logical way to juice an explosiveness number that ranked just 126th.
Twenty sacks allowed and a middling 152 yards per game on the ground were tolerable last year because the line around Francis Mauigoa still produced explosive, efficient football. Now Mauigoa and four other departed linemen are gone, 8 in all, and Mario Cristobal is filling the void with the nation's top-ranked tackle recruit, Jackson Cantwell, alongside four-star Joel Ervin and Ben Congdon, while seniors Matthew McCoy and Ryan Rodriguez anchor whatever continuity exists up front. That mix of true freshmen and unproven juniors makes this a rebuild in pass protection first, with the explosiveness numbers (126th nationally) the first thing to watch for signs of regression.
Miami's line led the nation in sacks with 50 last year, but Akheem Mesidor (12.5 sacks) and Rueben Bain Jr. (9.5 sacks) are both gone, taking the bulk of that production with them. Ahmad Moten Sr. (4.5 sacks, 9 TFL) becomes the veteran anchor up front, while four-star edges Damon Wilson II and Asharri Charles arrive without college stats to prove but with the pedigree to replace the lost juice off the edge. Keona Davis adds an interior piece who already posted 3.5 TFL at Nebraska, but this group's ceiling now depends on unproven newcomers matching what two established stars just walked out the door with.
Mohamed Toure is the anchor here, coming off 84 tackles behind a front that produced 50 sacks, tops in the country, and he returns as the clear centerpiece of a group that otherwise loses depth pieces in Jack McManus, Bear Cortes, Luke D'Alise and Adarius Hayes without much stat-sheet damage. Chase Smith adds a proven complementary piece with 31 tackles, but the rest of the room is thin production-wise, which is why four-star St. Xavier product Karsten Busch and Edgewater's Justin Edwards were brought in to add bodies behind Toure and Smith even though neither has logged a college snap yet. With the rushing defense already elite at 89 yards allowed per game, Miami's linebacker turnover is a bet that Toure's every-down presence can mask a lack of proven depth until Busch or Edwards forces his way onto the field.
Miami's back end loses its two most disruptive tacklers in Keionte Scott and Jakobe Thomas, but the answer arrived from Boston College in Omar Thornton, who posted 82 tackles and 8 TFL last season and slots in as an instant contributor. Zechariah Poyser (68 tackles) and Xavier Lucas anchor a group that still returns real production, while a four-star haul of JJ Dunnigan, Jaelen Waters, Camdin Portis and Brody Jennings restocks the cupboard behind them. The pass defense ranked just 43rd in yards allowed a year ago even as the front dominated, so the newcomers' ceiling matters more for 2026 than anything the tackle totals show.
Miami didn't just lose Carter Davis's production, it went out and bought two replacements, importing Jack Olsen from Northwestern (18 of 20 field goals, 41 long) and Jake Weinberg from Florida State (12 of 19, 46 long) rather than trusting an internal option. Olsen's accuracy makes him the likely pick over Weinberg, and either upgrade solves a spot where returning kicker Will Rocha carries zero field-goal attempts on record. The punting game stays steady with Dylan Joyce back after a 44.4-yard average, so the only real uncertainty left for Cristobal's operation is settling which transfer kicker wins the job.
Miami didn't lose its quarterback so much as trade him for an equally productive one: Carson Beck's 3813 yards and 30 touchdowns walk out the door, replaced by Darian Mensah, who threw for 3973 yards and 34 scores at Duke while cutting his interceptions to 6. Mensah brings his top target with him too, pulling Cooper Barkate (72 catches, 1106 yards) over from Duke to pair with West Virginia transfer Cam Vaughn, which should soften the loss of Keelan Marion and CJ Daniels. The bigger hole is up front on defense, where Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr. take 12.5 and 9.5 sacks with them, and it falls on Nebraska addition Keona Davis and safety Omar Thornton, who racked up 82 tackles and 8 TFL at Boston College, to keep that unit from slipping.
Carson Beck's 3813 yards and 30 touchdowns are gone, and Miami handed the offense to Darian Mensah, whose Duke tape (3973 yards, 34 TD, just 6 INT) actually outshines what he is replacing. He arrives with Malachi Toney (109 catches, 1211 yards) and Mark Fletcher Jr. (1192 rushing yards) already in place, so the ceiling is there if Mensah's efficiency translates against ACC defenses rather than needing a breaking-in period.
Miami bettors made a killing whenever Cristobal's team faced a ranked opponent, cashing all eight covers while going 7-1 outright in those games, a split that shows this roster performed best under the brightest lights rather than coasting through lesser competition. That contrasts with a shakier 4-4 conference-play cover mark, suggesting the Hurricanes occasionally left value on the table against ACC foes they were expected to beat comfortably. With a 69% overall cover rate feeding into 2026 expectations, oddsmakers will likely tighten the number against ranked competition, making that spot the harder profit angle to repeat.
