Dan Lanning has the No. 5 roster in the country and a defense that gave up just 17.9 points a game, so anything short of Oregon reaching the sport's final weekend reads as underachievement.
Who takes over the 829 yards and 6 touchdowns Noah Whittington leaves behind on the ground? With offensive returning production at 67.2%, the pieces around Dante Moore are largely intact, so the answer likely comes from within a room that has already absorbed his snaps rather than a total overhaul at the position. That continuity matters more than the name that emerges, since Moore needs a run game that keeps defenses honest, not a workhorse who duplicates Whittington's exact role.
Everything on this schedule bends toward the trip to Ohio State, a 36% shot that stands as the lone true toss-up on the slate and the game that will decide whether 2026 reads as a step forward or a repeat. USC on the road (64%) and a home date with Michigan (77%) round out the real gauntlet, sandwiched between a run of should-win games against Boise State, Nebraska, UCLA, Northwestern and Washington that a Dan Lanning team with this projected 10-2 outlook needs to sweep without blinking. Go 1-2 in that stretch and Oregon is right back in the playoff mix behind a two-loss floor; drop two of the softer games too and the whole projection collapses.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Dan Lanning's 13-2 finish came loaded with warning signs that rarely repeat: a 2-0 mark in one-score games, a plus-6 turnover margin, and an offense that needed just 12.2 yards per point against league competition, well below the median. None of that describes a defense that's actually broken down, since opponents needed more yards than average to finish drives, but it does mean the record flatters this group more than the tape does. Lanning's fourth year was a strong one on the scoreboard, but 2026 is the year the margins tighten and Oregon has to prove the wins were built on more than close-game luck.
Dante Moore is back after throwing for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns, and that continuity is the story for an Oregon offense that already ranked 10th nationally in scoring. The Ducks were never a wide-open passing attack, finishing 39th in passing yards per game against a 10th-ranked scoring average, so the ceiling with Moore now comes from tightening an offense that settled for 4.10 points per scoring trip, 36th nationally. The defense gives him cover, sitting 7th in yards allowed per play, and that combination of a proven quarterback and a stingy front points Oregon back into the Big Ten's top tier.
Dante Moore's 30 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions already made Oregon's passing game a top-40 unit in yardage but a top-10 outfit in scoring, and now Dylan Raiola's arrival from Nebraska gives Dan Lanning real insurance behind him rather than an unproven backup plan. Moore returns as the unquestioned starter off a 13-2 season, and the offense's identity next season is less about replacing anyone than about Moore taking the same efficient, explosive attack (6.87 yards per play, 10th nationally) and cutting into those 10 picks. Raiola's own 2000 yards and 18 touchdowns at Nebraska mean Oregon is not just protected if Moore stumbles, it is stocked with a proven Big Ten-caliber arm in reserve.
Jordon Davison (667 yards, 15 TD) and Dierre Hill Jr. (656 yards, 5 TD) combined for 20 touchdowns without Noah Whittington ever missing a beat, and now that Whittington's 829 yards are actually gone, the room simply hands the reins to the two backs who were already doing the damage. Da'Jaun Riggs adds a proven change-of-pace option, while four-star signees Tradarian Ball and Brandon Smith arrive as long-term pieces rather than Year 1 necessities. This isn't a rebuild at the position, it's Davison and Hill inheriting a full workload behind an offense that already ran at a top-10 scoring clip.
Dakorien Moore and Jeremiah McClellan combined for modest per-catch numbers a year ago, and Gary Bryant Jr.'s 4 touchdowns are gone, so Oregon went shopping rather than trust the room to grow on its own. Iverson Hooks arrives from UAB off a 72-catch, 927-yard season and should slot in as an immediate outside threat, while five-star signee Jalen Lott joins straight out of Frisco Panther Creek as the class headliner rather than a portal add. With Aaron Bidwell, Brady Bidwell, Jurrion Dickey and Dillon Gresham all unproven statistically, this receiver room's identity in 2026 gets written by Hooks and Lott, not by last year's shares.
Kenyon Sadiq's 51 catches and 8 touchdowns walk out the door, but Jamari Johnson already proved he can be more than a complementary piece after his own 32-catch, 510-yard, 3-touchdown season. Roger Saleapaga returns with just 3 catches to his name, so the real jump has to come from Johnson absorbing a bigger share of the passing-game targets Sadiq leaves behind. Five-star Reidsville product Kendre Harrison arrives as the long-term answer at the position, but with no college snaps yet, 2026 is Johnson's room to run before Harrison eventually takes it over.
Nineteen sacks allowed and a top-10 scoring offense masked a line that loses five recognizable names, including Emmanuel Pregnon and Matthew Bedford, to the departures column. Dan Lanning restocks up front with blue-chip freshmen Immanuel Iheanacho and Tommy Tofi plus Yale transfer Michael Bennett III, but the group is mostly built around continuity, with juniors Iapani Laloulu and Dave Iuli among the more experienced returners in a room that keeps 14 bodies from a year ago. With no clear starting five to point to, Oregon is betting that volume of returning players, not a single proven anchor, keeps the run game (199 yards per game, 20th nationally) humming into 2026.
Oregon's defense finished 7th nationally in yards allowed and 5th against the pass, but the pass rush was pedestrian, just 30 sacks and a 49th-ranked mark in tackles for loss, and the group that produced most of those stops (Tionne Gray, Terrance Green) is gone. Bear Alexander (6.5 TFL, 1 sack) and A'Mauri Washington (4.5 TFL) return as the interior anchors, but the real bet is five-star edge Anthony Jones Jr., who arrives with no college snaps and needs to be the disruptor this front lacked. If juco transfer Jerome Simmons and the freshman class up front can push run-stuff numbers past that 100th-ranked mark, Oregon's back seven inherits a defense that already forces opponents off schedule at a top-15 rate.
Bryce Boettcher's 132 tackles walk out the door, but Oregon isn't replacing a tackling machine so much as unleashing the pass rush it already had. Teitum Tuioti (9.5 sacks, 16 TFL) and Matayo Uiagalelei (6 sacks, 9.5 TFL) both return off disruptive seasons, and with Jerry Mixon and Devon Jackson back inside, the Ducks keep the pieces that made this defense 7th in yards allowed per game. Four-star arrivals Braylon Hodge and Tristan Phillips add depth, but the real swing factor is whether Nasir Wyatt or Will Straton can soak up the tackle volume Boettcher leaves behind without the group losing its edge as a havoc unit.
Dillon Thieneman's 92 tackles walk out the door, but Oregon replaces that lost havoc with a proven ballhawk rather than a projection: Koi Perich arrives from Minnesota off an 82-tackle, 3-TFL season and slots straight into the back end. Aaron Flowers (69 tackles) and Brandon Finney Jr. (42 tackles, 3 TFL) anchor a secondary that already ranked 5th nationally in pass yards allowed per game, and Perich's arrival lets Lanning keep that group aggressive instead of rebuilding it. The bigger swing factor is the four-star freshman wave, Jett Washington, Devin Jackson, Davon Benjamin and Xavier Lherisse, none proven yet, but stacked behind Perich and Finney it is a room built to stay elite on the back end even as the run defense, 100th in run-stuff rate, stays the unit's real weak spot.
Oregon loses its entire specialist corps that mattered on the stat sheet, and the drop-off starts at kicker, where Atticus Sappington's 19-of-24 season and 108 points walk out the door along with punter James Ferguson-Reynolds' 42-yard average on 35 attempts. What is left on campus is Gage Hurych, who went 0 of 1 on field goals a year ago, and Rocco Graziano, who has no game statistics at all, so Nevada transfer Keaton Emmett arrives with a real shot to just win the job outright despite having no logged stats himself. A unit that was a strength in 2025 is now a projection built on an unproven transfer, and Dan Lanning's margin for special-teams mistakes in a Big Ten title push just got thinner.
Dante Moore comes back after throwing for 3565 yards and 30 touchdowns, but Oregon rebuilt the cast around him rather than run it back. Noah Whittington, Malik Benson, Kenyon Sadiq and Bryce Boettcher are all gone, so the plan leans on imports: Iverson Hooks arrives from UAB off a 927-yard season, Koi Perich lands from Minnesota after 82 tackles, and Simeon Price gives the backfield a new lead body following Whittington's exit. With 31 players out against 13 in and a No. 3 recruiting class layered on top, this is Moore's most unfamiliar supporting cast yet, and how fast Hooks and Perich acclimate will shape whether that continuity at quarterback actually shows up in the record.
Dante Moore is the projected starter after throwing for 3565 yards and 30 touchdowns, and Oregon landing Dylan Raiola out of the portal only raises the bar he has to clear rather than threatening his job. With Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill Jr. both back in the backfield and Jeremiah McClellan returning at receiver, the pieces around Moore are stable enough that his own ceiling, not a rebuild, decides how far this offense goes. Cut the interceptions from a year ago and Oregon's attack matches its talent.
Oregon went 13-2 under Dan Lanning and still finished a shrug-worthy 8-6-1 against the number, meaning the Ducks dominated scoreboards without dominating spreads. The disconnect sharpens against ranked competition, where Oregon is 5-2 straight up but only 3-4 against the spread, suggesting the market has caught up to blowout wins over lesser opponents. Road value is where the profile actually pays, with Oregon 5-0 outright and covering 60% of the time away from Autzen, including a perfect mark as a road underdog.
