Neal Brown steps into a program that just won 12 games yet returns almost none of the production behind it, a jarring mismatch for a roster ranked 96th nationally in talent that will lean on Jackson and a defense that finished 77th in scoring a year ago to hold the line while everything else gets rebuilt.
Can Tayven Jackson replicate a 12-win formula with almost nobody left who helped build it? With offensive and defensive holdovers barely registering, Jackson is not just replacing a name, he is the connective tissue for two units learning together in real time, and that kind of collective inexperience usually shows up in the margins first, third downs, red zone, the moments that separated North Texas from the rest of the league in 2025. The likelier outcome is a rockier first half as Jackson and a nearly all-new supporting cast sort out chemistry, with the offense's ceiling tied directly to how fast he adjusts to a roster he barely knows.
Neal Brown inherits a group that just won the American at 7-1, but the projection model sees regression to 6-6 with a 63% bowl shot, and the road slate explains why. A trip to Indiana carries just a 2% win chance, and road trips to Tulane (24%) and Navy (30%) are the real swing games that will decide whether this stays a bowl team. The rest of the schedule is manageable, with home dates against UAB (76%) and Charlotte (75%) as the kind of wins a first-year staff needs to bank before the tougher road grind hits.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
Every marker under the 2025 record points the same direction: a 3-0 mark in one-score games, a plus-9 turnover margin and an offense that scored on just 11.3 yards per point all flattered a 12-2 team that will not replicate those breaks under Neal Brown in year one. Add only 5% returning production and Tayven Jackson taking over an offense that finished drives more efficiently than almost anyone will repeat, and the printed 6-6 projection reads less like a slight and more like the honest number. The floor here is a bowl game if Jackson settles in fast, but the 12-2 ceiling from a year ago is gone.
The 12-2 debut for Neal Brown was built on the parts least likely to repeat: a 3-0 mark in one-score games, a +9 turnover margin, and a league win rate that ran well ahead of what North Texas actually did on the field against conference opponents. Add in almost nothing coming back statistically and a power rating that still sits at 90th nationally, and the 2026 rebuild starts from a much shakier floor than last year's record suggests. Brown gets a full offseason to install his own program, but the record he inherited flatters the roster more than the numbers underneath it do.
North Texas scored at will in 2025, topping the country in points per game and total yards while running the ball a modest 194 yards a game behind a passing attack that finished 2nd nationally. That machine now hands the keys to Tayven Jackson, the UCF transfer projected to start after throwing for 2151 yards with 10 touchdowns against 8 interceptions last season, and his job is simply not to be the reason the explosion stops. The bigger worry sits on defense, where a run unit allowing 216 rushing yards a game and ranking 125th in run-stuff rate has to tighten up if a +9 turnover margin is going to keep bailing it out.
Drew Mestemaker's 4,369 yards and 34 touchdowns walk out the door, and North Texas replaces him not with an internal answer but with Tayven Jackson, who arrives from UCF with 2,151 yards and 10 scores against 8 interceptions last season. That turnover rate is the real swing factor for an offense that led the nation in scoring and yardage a year ago behind a much cleaner passer. Chris Jimerson Jr. and Chaston Ditta sit behind him with minimal snaps between them, so this attack's ceiling now rides entirely on Jackson tightening up decisions in a system built to push the ball downfield.
Caleb Hawkins' 1,424 yards and 25 touchdowns walk out the door, and North Texas rebuilt the entire room around new arrivals rather than hand it to an unproven Keenan Jackson Jr., who has no prior stats on file. Nick Osho, who ran for 686 yards and 8 touchdowns at Indiana State, arrives as the clear early-down answer, with West Virginia transfer Jahiem White adding a change-of-pace option after 133 yards and 3 scores there. Neal Brown inherits a top-ranked scoring and yardage attack that leaned on Hawkins for its ground identity, so how fast Osho settles in behind that offense determines whether the run game still complements a passing attack that ranked 2nd nationally in yards per game.
North Texas didn't just lose volume when Miles Coleman (47-550-2) and Landon Sides (34-449-1) left, it lost the top two catch totals off a room that fueled the nation's No. 1 scoring offense, so Neal Brown rebuilt almost entirely through the portal. James Tyre arrives from Western Carolina having caught 68 balls for 832 yards and 11 touchdowns, and Grayson O'Bara adds 44 grabs and 590 yards from Dartmouth, giving the room proven production the returning group never provided (Dalton Carnes tops returnees with just 7 catches for 80 yards). Betting on Tyre and Corri Milliner (24-341-3 at UAB) to slide into featured roles is the clear path for an offense that ranked 2nd in passing yards per game to keep that ceiling intact under a new staff.
Tre Williams III took his 30 catches and 5 touchdowns out the door, and Neal Brown's first North Texas team rebuilds the tight end room almost entirely through the portal. Brec Long (South Alabama) and Max Reese (Mississippi State) arrive with modest receiving lines, while Drew Clemens (Utah) and Jerious Singletary (Huntsville) bring no track record at all, leaving Victor Aderungboye and Connor Vaughn as unproven holdovers. That's a lot of turnover to plug into an attack that scored at will a year ago, but this offense ran through its receivers and backfield anyway, so the position group's inexperience matters far less than whether Long can approximate the size of role Williams vacated.
A line that helped produce 511 yards per game and the No. 3 success rate in the country loses 13 bodies, and Neal Brown is starting over up front in year one. Dylan Shaw, Keon Johnson, Ryan Krueger, Amarion Berry and Drew Cunningham are the most experienced names left standing, but with 11 returning against that many departures, this is a rebuild rather than a continuation of what worked. Brown went to the portal for Henry Fenuku (Missouri) and Chandler Strong (Georgia Southern) inside and Neto Umeozulu (Texas) for interior depth, while KC Ekwu and Caden Voltaire come in as tackles to address a group that already allowed 18 sacks a year ago.
North Texas didn't lose its defensive line to attrition so much as blow it up and rebuild around the edge. Ethan Day and Keviyan Huddleston, who combined for the bulk of last year's pass rush production, are gone, and new coach Neal Brown is replacing them almost entirely through the portal, bringing in Udoka Ezeani (41 tackles, 5 sacks, 9.5 TFL at UTEP), Davion Rhodes (34 tackles, 6 TFL at Georgia Southern) and David Onuoha (42 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 4.5 TFL at Massachusetts). That's a bet that proven production elsewhere fixes a run defense that ranked 132nd in rushing yards allowed and 125th in run-stuff rate, with returning tackles Brayden Knox and Terrell Washington holding down the interior while the new edges try to turn a middling havoc rate into actual disruption.
Trey Fields' 100 tackles and Shane Whitter's 58 walk out the door, gutting a group that already ran 132nd in rushing yards allowed and 125th in run-stuff rate last season, and Neal Brown has answered almost entirely through the portal. Aaron Alexander arrives from Arkansas State with 92 tackles and 3 TFL, and Zakye Barker adds 27 tackles from SMU, giving the middle of this defense two proven tacklers to plug in immediately rather than break in freshmen. With Jaden Manning and Brenden Reese returning only bit roles from a year ago, Alexander and Barker aren't competing for jobs, they're the answer to a run defense that has to climb out of the bottom third nationally.
The back end that anchored a 12-win season is almost entirely gone: Will Jones II (82 tackles), Patrick Smith-Young (70), David Fisher (48) and Da'Veawn Armstead all departed, taking most of the tackle production from a pass defense that ranked 8th in yards allowed per game. BJ Allen Jr. is the lone proven returner with real snaps (15 tackles, 1 TFL), and Neal Brown leaned hard into the portal to rebuild around him, adding Caden Jenkins from Baylor, Zach Johnson from Southeastern Louisiana and safety Brandon Jones from McNeese. That coverage number is unlikely to hold with this much turnover, and the bigger issue is a run defense that already ranked 132nd in rushing yards allowed, a problem this incoming class of corners does not directly fix.
North Texas is remaking its kicking game almost entirely off the transfer market, and the App State pipeline is the story. Dominic De Freitas arrives after going 20 of 26 on field goals with a 49-yard long and 91 points, walking into a job vacated by Kali Nguma, who hit 12 of 13 with 106 points last year, so the drop-off risk is real even if the leg strength translates. Punter Ian Ratliff also comes over from App State off a 43.8-yard average on 56 punts, a clear upgrade on departed Sawyer Evans' 40.5 mark, while fellow App State import Jacob Poff takes over long-snapping duties.
Drew Mestemaker's 4,369 yards and 34 touchdowns walk out the door, along with Caleb Hawkins and three of the top four receivers from a 12-2 team, so North Texas is rebuilding its entire skill group around Tayven Jackson, who arrives from UCF after throwing for 2,151 yards with 10 touchdowns against 8 interceptions. James Tyre and his 68 catches for 832 yards from Western Carolina, plus Indiana State transfer Nick Osho's 686 rushing yards, give Jackson a portal-built supporting cast rather than a homegrown one. Neal Brown inherits a program that just went 7-1 in conference, but the offense that got them there is gone, and a 137th-ranked recruiting class means the 49 transfer arrivals are doing the heavy lifting on this roster turnover.
North Texas won 12 games behind Drew Mestemaker throwing for 4,369 yards, and now hands the offense to Tayven Jackson, a UCF transfer who threw for just 2,151 yards with 8 interceptions last season. Neal Brown's debut in Denton rests on whether Jackson can cut down those mistakes against a tougher American slate, since the receiving corps around him, led by returner Dalton Carnes, offers little proven volume to bail him out.
North Texas did not just win 12 games in 2025, it crushed bettors doing it, covering 71% of the time overall and 88% in conference play. That home number stands out most: 6-1 against the spread as a home favorite, meaning oddsmakers never adequately priced how good this team actually was on its own field. The one soft spot is the tell for 2026: 1-2 against the spread against ranked teams, so as Neal Brown takes over and North Texas presumably climbs into that class itself, the gap between this program's reputation and its market price is about to close fast.
