Ohio just went 9-4 with a roster ranked 126th in accumulated talent, and John Hauser's second season is the real test of whether that gap was coaching or simply a soft league year catching up to the Bobcats.
Can Nick Poulos carry an offense that returns just 3.7% of its production from a 9-4 team? With almost the entire skill-position group gone alongside Parker Navarro, Poulos has to build his supporting cast essentially from scratch rather than lean on it, and that points to a rockier start than the record last season suggests. The defense, holding onto 42.2% of its production, gives Ohio a floor while the offense figures itself out around its new quarterback.
The one game that actually threatens John Hauser's second season is the trip to Nebraska, a road test Ohio is projected to lose at just an 11% clip. Everything else on this slate ranks 133rd in difficulty nationally, but the MAC gauntlet still bites twice, at Miami (OH) at 41% and home against Toledo at just 44%. Win those two coin flips and a 9-4 team with 6-2 league marks last season cruises to the 7-5 range the projection already expects, with 82% bowl odds baked in.
Every team in the FBS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
John Hauser's 9-4 debut, capped by a 17-10 bowl win over UNLV, was carried by exactly the things that tend not to repeat: a 5-3 mark in one-score games and a conference win rate that ran well ahead of what Ohio's own yardage margin in those league games actually supported. A weak power rating at No. 97 backs that up, and with only 23% of production returning, the roster doing the rebuilding is thinner than the record suggests. Year two for Hauser arrives in the Mid-American with a program that needs to find real per-play improvement, not just close-game bounces, to match last year's win total.
Nick Poulos takes over an offense that barely needs him to throw, given a rushing attack that ranked 9th nationally at 228 yards per game while the passing game sat 109th at 184. That imbalance means Ohio's ceiling in 2026 rests on whether Poulos can complete enough throws to keep defenses honest, not on him carrying the offense himself. The bigger concern is a defense that finished 89th in sacks and 86th in havoc rate, so points allowed climbing past 21.9 per game is the real threat to another run-heavy formula working.
Nick Poulos takes over a huddle that produced 228 rushing yards a game and ranked 9th nationally on the ground, with only 19 career passing yards to his name. That imbalance is the point: Ohio's passing game sat 109th nationally, so the staff brought in Matt Vezza, a New Hampshire transfer who threw for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns, as insurance if Poulos can't stretch a defense. The bet for 2026 is that Poulos manages the run-heavy attack Parker Navarro left behind well enough that Vezza never has to leave the bench.
Sieh Bangura and Duncan Brune combined to shred defenses for the nation's 9th-ranked rushing attack, and both are gone, leaving Ohio with three returning backs in Irving Brown, Mike Taylor Jr. and Aginon Wilson Jr. who have no meaningful carries on record. Victor Rosa arrives from UConn with actual production (155 yards, 2 TD) to steady a room otherwise built on unproven names, while three-star James Kelly adds a long-term piece. With passing offense stuck at 109th nationally, John Hauser's ground game cannot afford a drop-off, and this backfield now rides almost entirely on Rosa's transfer tape translating and one of the unproven returners winning real touches.
Chase Hendricks (71 catches, 1037 yards, 7 TD) and Rodney Harris II (30 catches, 419 yards, 2 TD) are both gone, taking almost the entire receiving production with them, since the returning trio of Dom Dorwart, Max Rodarte and Eian Pugh combined for nothing bigger than 119 yards apiece last year. Ohio leans on a five-man class of three-star arrivals, Kaden Page, Preston Bowman, Marcus Hughbanks, Zach Hackleman and Ian VerSteeg, to simply fill a room that produced almost no proven passing threat. That gap matters given the offense already ranked 109th in passing yards per game a year ago, so the ground game stays the engine while this new corps tries to give John Hauser something downfield.
Mason Williams (27 catches, 285 yards, 3 TD) and Jake Bruno (8 catches, 78 yards, 2 TD) are both gone, wiping out every logged catch this position produced in 2025. Tim Boals, Aiden Lowery and AJ Miller return with no statistical track record, so Ohio is banking on Marian (IN) transfer Riley Palmeter and Illinois transfer Jake Furtney to supply whatever receiving punch the room needs. With passing offense already a weak point at 184 yards per game (109th nationally) and the ground game carrying the load at 228 yards per game (9th), this group's blocking matters more than any stat line it puts up in 2026.
That 228 rushing yards per game (9th nationally) came off a line that lost nine of its own, including departed veterans Nick Marinaro, Trent Allen and Andres Dewerk, and John Hauser has to replace that push with a group that returns nine bodies but no proven starters. Seniors Joshua Johnson and Tigana Cisse are the most experienced holdovers, though there is no depth chart to say they started, and the room otherwise leans on juniors Jarian Shelby, Josh Waite and Kam Wright. The reinforcements are all high school or transfer additions rather than proven starters, headlined by tackle Danny Fortson Jr., transfer tackle Sandro Malicevic and recruits Mike Montgomery, Colton Crosley and CJ Dawson, and until that mix sorts itself out, the 26 sacks allowed and 109th-ranked passing attack are the bigger worry than the ground game.
Ohio's front loses its only real disruptor in Jay Crable, whose 6 sacks and 8 TFL dwarfed anything else on the 2025 line, plus Pius Odjugo's 22 tackles up front. What comes back is a group of tacklers, not pass rushers, Nathan Hale's 16 stops and Evan Herrmann's 13 tackles, with just 1 sack apiece, on a unit that already ranked 89th in sacks nationally. The reinforcements are all projects, three-star linemen Austin Adkins and Nate Hunt-Heller and edges Troy Stiggers and Isaiah Street with no prior production, plus Michigan State transfer Tyler Gillison, who arrives with only 2 tackles logged, so the pressure numbers figure to stay thin before they improve.
Ohio's linebacker room barely turned over, and that continuity is the point: Michael Molnar (62 tackles, 5 TFL) and Charlie Christopher (63 tackles, 3 TFL) both come back after carrying the load a year ago, with Jack Fries (54 tackles) rounding out a trio that combined to outproduce departed Cameron Hollobaugh (45 tackles) and Makel Williams (12 tackles) by a wide margin. The only real addition is three-star Nolan Ogburn, brought in as developmental depth rather than an immediate factor, so this group's ceiling depends on Molnar and Christopher pushing a defense that ranked 83rd in tackles for loss and 89th in sacks into more disruptive territory rather than just replacing lost bodies.
DJ Walker (55 tackles, 6 TFL) is the only proven piece left in a secondary that lost Tank Pearson's 49 tackles at corner along with Rickey Hyatt Jr. and Pierre Kemeni Jr., meaning Kendall Bannister and Tyson Long have to turn spot duty into real cornerback snaps. The 2026 class leans on juco corner KJ Sejour and Eli Thompson, who each arrive with actual tackle production, to speed up a secondary that finished 48th in passing yards allowed but still gave up 5.82 yards per play. Walker's range at safety is the floor for this group; how fast Sejour and Thompson translate outside will decide whether Ohio's defense climbs past that middling havoc number or just holds steady.
Ohio went out and got its placekicker rather than hoping one emerges, pulling Will Hryszko in from Kent State after he hit 6 of 8 field goals with a long of 38 last season. That's an upgrade over what Brack Peacock managed on just 3 of 6 tries, and it pushes Peacock into a battle he now looks like the backup in. Magnus Haines returns after averaging 42.3 yards a punt, giving John Hauser one leg of special teams settled while the placekicking job gets sorted out with actual competition instead of default.
Ohio graduated its entire offensive identity, Sieh Bangura's 1392 rushing yards and Chase Hendricks' 71 catches for 1037 yards walk out the door alongside Duncan Brune, and Nick Poulos steps in as the established 2026 starter off just 19 career passing yards. That gap gets patched by committee rather than replaced outright, with UConn transfer Victor Rosa and his 155 rushing yards joining a receiving corps that adds Kentucky's Preston Bowman. The bigger name, New Hampshire transfer Matt Vezza and his 2673 passing yards, arrives too, but with Poulos confirmed as QB1, Vezza's arm talent has to show up as a complementary weapon rather than under center.
Ohio's whole season rides on Nick Poulos turning a barely-there 19 passing yards into a real starter's résumé, since Parker Navarro's departure leaves the Bobcats needing him to actually run the offense rather than manage it. The linebacker trio of Charlie Christopher, Michael Molnar and Jack Fries, plus safety DJ Walker, gives Ohio a defense that can bail out early growing pains, but a 9-4 team does not repeat that mark if Poulos cannot throw the ball with any consistency.
John Hauser's Bobcats were a different team depending on the zip code in 2025, going 6-0 straight up and covering 67% of the time at home while dropping to 2-4 straight up and just 33% against the number on the road. Conference play tells a similar story about overconfidence in Ohio as a chalk pick, with bettors backing a 6-2 straight up mark to a losing 3-5 cover record. The road underdog spots were the rare bright spot at 2-1, suggesting the smarter market angle in year two of Hauser's tenure is fading Ohio at home and grabbing the points whenever this team travels.
