Ryan Silverfield takes over a roster ranked 23rd nationally for talent that still finished 2-10 and gave up 33.8 points per game, a gap that exposes just how far the 130th-ranked scoring defense has to climb before the pedigree shows up on the scoreboard.
Can KJ Jackson hold the job for a full season when only 18.2 percent of the offense returns around him? Almost nobody from last year's two-win team is walking back through that door, so Jackson will take his lumps behind a rebuilt cast with little cohesion to lean on. Expect the growing pains to show up in turnovers and stalled drives before any real payoff arrives.
Ryan Silverfield inherits the nation's No. 2 hardest schedule in his first year, and the season's verdict gets written on the road: at Texas (6% win), at Texas A&M (13%) and a home date with Georgia (13%) are the actual measuring sticks, not the projected 4-8 finish on the card. Everything else is winnable or close to it, home dates against Tulsa (84%) and North Alabama (95%) should bank early wins, while Missouri (37%), South Carolina (38%) and LSU (21%) sit in the muddle that decides whether this rebuild clears bowl territory. Given the gauntlet up top, the margin for error against that middle tier is thin from the opening week.

Ryan Silverfield takes over a program that finished 2-10 and 0-8 in the SEC, a floor low enough that almost any direction is up. The power rating, No. 47 nationally, tells a different story than the record does, hinting the roster was never as bad as an 0-8 league mark suggests. That gap between talent and results is the whole bet on year one, a first-year staff walking into a losing culture with more baseline quality than the standings let on.
A 2-10 record hid real quality: Arkansas outgained league opponents by 28.7 yards per game yet went 0-8 in those contests, went 0-6 in one-score games, and coughed up a turnover margin of -11, all the kind of bad luck that tends to swing back. KJ Jackson, who threw for 441 yards with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, projects as the 2026 starter for an offense that ranked 7th nationally in yards per play and 12th in success rate, numbers Ryan Silverfield inherits rather than has to build from scratch. The defense is the real issue, ranking 130th in points allowed per game and giving up scores far too cheaply at 12.6 yards allowed per point, and with just 19% of production returning, that side has to be rebuilt almost from the ground up even as the offense should carry over.
KJ Jackson takes the first-team reps into Ryan Silverfield's first camp off just 441 yards and 3 touchdowns, the clear front-runner but not a lock, with Memphis transfer AJ Hill and high school signee Hank Hendrix pushing him in an open race. Taylen Green's 2714 yards and 19 touchdowns are gone, a massive chunk of an offense that ranked 14th in total yards and 7th in yards per play, so whoever wins the job inherits real weapons and real expectations. The bigger threat to that ceiling is protection, since last year's group allowed 29 sacks, ranked 99th nationally, and a first-year staff installing a new quarterback needs that number to shrink no matter who is behind center.
Mike Washington Jr. and his 1,068 yards are gone, and Arkansas didn't wait around to replace that workload from within. Memphis transfer Sutton Smith, who ran for 669 yards and 7 touchdowns last season, walks into the lead role, with Braylen Russell (286 yards, 5 TD) as the proven complement rather than the headliner. That's a real shift from a year ago, when Washington carried the offense on the ground behind a line that gave up 29 sacks (99th nationally), and it puts pressure on Smith to hold up as a full-time back in the SEC instead of a rotational piece.
Arkansas rebuilt this room almost entirely through the portal, and the numbers say it should be an upgrade: Donovan Faupel arrives off a 61-catch, 661-yard, 7-touchdown season at New Mexico State, joined by Jamari Hawkins (38 catches, 623 yards at Memphis) and Chris Marshall (30 catches, 574 yards at Boise State). That trio combined outproduces what walks out the door with O'Mega Blake (57-760-5) and Raylen Sharpe (41-592-3), leaving CJ Brown, who caught 28 passes for 319 yards and 3 scores, as the lone proven holdover in an offense that already ranked 7th nationally in yards per play. Ryan Silverfield inherits real speed and volume at the position, not a rebuild from scratch.
Rohan Jones is gone, and with him the tight end room's only real explosive threat, but Jaden Platt returns off 21 catches and 296 yards to anchor the room under a new staff led by Ryan Silverfield. The bigger swing is Matt Adcock, who arrives from Memphis with 12 catches for 3 touchdowns and gives Arkansas a proven red-zone target the departed group lacked. That production plugs into an offense that already moved the ball at a top-10 clip in yards per play, so the tight ends do not need to carry the passing game, just finish the chances a 32.9-point attack keeps creating.
Arkansas allowed 29 sacks last season, a number that pushed Ryan Silverfield to overhaul the room in his first year rather than patch it. Twelve linemen are out the door, and the returning group led by seniors Brooks Edmonson, Caden Kitler and Payton Parks-Smith gets reinforced by a real infusion of tackle depth, headlined by four-star Bryant Williams from Louisiana alongside Terence Roberson Jr., Ben Mubenga and Tucker Young, plus interior addition Hugh Smith. With more bodies gone than back, this is a rebuilt front trying to protect an offense that ranked 7th nationally in yards per play, and the new pieces up front will decide whether that explosiveness survives the transition.
Quincy Rhodes Jr. is the one proven disruptor here, coming off 8 sacks and 15.5 TFL, but he was surrounded by almost nothing last season as Arkansas ranked 123rd in yards allowed per game and 124th in yards per play allowed. Charlie Collins, Cameron Ball, Justus Boone, Ian Geffrard and Danny Saili are all gone, so new coach Ryan Silverfield is rebuilding the interior around Virginia transfer Hunter Osborne and four-star signee Danny Beale III, a high school addition out of Cross County. That much turnover behind one established piece means the front is betting on unproven talent to fix a group that finished 78th in tackles for loss, and Rhodes alone cannot move a defense that let opponents stay on schedule 47.3% of the time.
Arkansas didn't just lose bodies at linebacker, it lost its two leading tacklers in Xavian Sorey Jr. (81 tackles) and Stephen Dix Jr. (79 tackles), gutting a group that already ranked 123rd in yards allowed per game. Ryan Silverfield answered by going almost entirely to the portal, headlined by North Carolina transfer Khmori House, who brings 73 tackles of proven production, plus West Virginia's Ben Bogle and Kentucky's Steven Soles Jr. to pair with returning tackler Bradley Shaw. This is a near-total roster rebuild at the position, and House's arrival matters more than any returning name on the depth chart.
A secondary that let opponents complete for 239 yards a game and stay on schedule 47.3 percent of the time gets almost entirely rebuilt on the fly, with 18 defensive backs out the door, including tacklers Larry Worth III, Caleb Wooden and Julian Neal. Ryan Silverfield leaned on the portal to answer it, bringing in Cincinnati's Christian Harrison and Colorado's Carter Stoutmire at safety and pairing Tulane corner Jahiem Johnson with Maryland's La'khi Roland, all four arriving with real tackle production elsewhere. Joker Johnson, who racked up 38 tackles a year ago, is the lone proven piece left on the back end, which means this year's version of the unit will run through the newcomers from day one, not a returning corps that barely exists on paper.
Scott Starzyk's departure leaves a real void after he hit 14 of 18 field goals and 89 points, and Arkansas didn't leave the answer to chance, landing Tennessee transfer Max Gilbert, who made 14 of 19 kicks with a long of 53 and 106 points last season. That's a proven leg replacing a proven leg, which is rare at this position. Jesse Ehrlich returns to handle punting at a steady 43.1-yard clip, giving new coach Ryan Silverfield one settled specialist spot while the kicking battle sorts itself out around Gilbert.
Ryan Silverfield inherits a roster gutted by a 43-man exodus, and the offense he's rebuilding no longer includes Taylen Green's 2,714 passing yards or Mike Washington Jr.'s 1,068 rushing yards. KJ Jackson, who threw for 441 yards and zero interceptions in limited action, projects as the man replacing Green, with Memphis import Sutton Smith (669 yards, 7 TD) and receivers Donovan Faupel and Jamari Hawkins brought in to give him weapons. Defensively, the 41 arrivals include North Carolina linebacker Khmori House and West Virginia's Ben Bogle plugging the gap left by departed tacklers Xavian Sorey Jr. and Stephen Dix Jr., but replacing that much production with a No. 46 class means 2026 is about establishing a new identity, not chasing last year's 2-10 mark.
Everything for Arkansas in 2026 runs through KJ Jackson, who threw for just 441 yards a year ago and now inherits an offense that lost Taylen Green's 2,714 yards and 19 touchdowns outright. Jackson gets a soft landing with CJ Brown, Jaden Platt and Braylen Russell all back plus Memphis transfer Sutton Smith, who ran for 669 yards and 7 scores, absorbing pressure in the backfield, so the passing game just needs Jackson to protect the ball the way he did in his small sample last season. If he does, a first-year staff under Ryan Silverfield has a foundation to build on beyond the 2-10 record that got them here.
Arkansas as a home favorite never covered a single time last season, going 0-3 while the broader home slate cratered to 1-5 against the number. The market kept pricing this roster like the SEC pedigree still meant something, and a 2-10 team that finished 0-8 in conference play punished that assumption every week. Ryan Silverfield inherits a program the books have not adjusted for, and until Fayetteville lines drop closer to reality, backing Arkansas at home is the same bet that lost all last fall.
