Bear Bachmeier has BYU sitting at No. 20 in the power ratings despite a roster whose recruiting pedigree checks in at just 70th nationally, and that 12-2 mark last season was a product of Kalani Sitake's program outperforming its own talent floor rather than matching it.
Can Bear Bachmeier repeat a 12-2 season with barely two-thirds of the offense around him back? The likelier outcome is a step back in efficiency rather than collapse, since Bachmeier himself is the constant and the proven piece, but replacing Kingston's targets with an offense that returns just 69.3% of its production means BYU's passing attack looks different, and probably lesser, before it looks better.
Coming off a 12-2 season, BYU's 2026 slate hands Kalani Sitake a schedule ranked 49th in difficulty that is heavier on should-win games than gauntlets, with Utah Tech, Colorado State and Iowa State all sitting above 80 percent. The season turns on three road-and-home tests: a home date with Notre Dame at just 26 percent, a trip to Utah at 55 percent, and a visit to TCU at 60 percent. Splitting those three would validate the 9-3 projection and 98 percent bowl odds, but the Notre Dame game is the one that separates a solid Big 12 year from a signature one.

Kalani Sitake's 12-2 finish and 8-1 mark in league play look like a program ready to take another step in year 11, but the details underneath say otherwise. BYU won close games at a 4-0 clip and finished conference play with a win rate well above what its own yardage margin against league opponents would predict, and an offense that scored efficiently on just 12.7 yards per point is the least repeatable part of that formula. The turnover margin was clean at plus-8 over 14 games, another number unlikely to hold, which makes 2026 a year to watch whether the No. 20 power rating and long-tenured staff can find steadier footing than last year's record suggests.
Bear Bachmeier is back after throwing for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns, and BYU's 2026 offense is built the same way it won 12 games last fall: efficient rather than dynamic, ranking 33rd in success rate but just 106th in explosiveness. That gap is the real story, this offense moves the chains and protects Bachmeier extremely well (11th in sacks allowed) without hitting many chunk plays, so the ceiling depends on whether new pieces around him can turn steady drives into scores rather than field goals. The defense held teams to 19.1 points per game and forced enough turnovers (+8 margin) to cover for that lack of explosiveness in 2025, and BYU needs that same formula again since the offense still isn't built to bail anyone out through the air.
Bear Bachmeier threw for 3033 yards and 15 touchdowns behind one of the country's best pass-protecting lines, allowing just 15 sacks all season, and that shield lets BYU keep building around him rather than break in someone new. The bigger question is whether Bachmeier's 221 yards per game passing attack finds more explosiveness, since BYU ranked just 106th in explosiveness even while sitting 32nd in scoring. Ryder Lyons arrives as the four-star addition for depth, but this offense's ceiling in 2026 rides entirely on Bachmeier turning efficient, protected snaps into bigger plays downfield.
LJ Martin's 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns weren't a one-man show by accident, they were the plan, and BYU lost almost none of the supporting cast that made it work. Jovesa Damuni and Sione Moa return as change-of-pace pieces behind him, while the only real subtraction is Enoch Nawahine's 82 yards, easily absorbed given how concentrated the production already was around Martin. Devaughn Eka arrives from Lehi as a depth add, but this remains Martin's backfield, and a run game that ranked 39th nationally in yards per game should keep leaning on him as the engine of Kalani Sitake's offense.
BYU's top two producers at receiver, Parker Kingston (66 catches, 924 yards, 5 TD) and Chase Roberts (54 catches, 802 yards, 6 TD), are both gone, leaving a room where every returner topped out at 14 catches. Jojo Phillips (14 catches, 161 yards) and Cody Hagen (12 catches, 97 yards) are the most experienced holdovers, but this group leans on newcomers to replace lost production, from Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper to four-star signee Jaron Pula out of Lone Peak. With that much juice walking out the door, BYU's passing attack, already just 74th in yards per game, is betting on unproven names to keep the offense's explosiveness from sinking further after ranking 106th in that category in 2025.
Carsen Ryan's 45 catches and 620 yards walk out the door, and BYU replaces that production with a straight talent upgrade rather than an internal promotion. Walker Lyons arrives from USC off a 20-catch, 223-yard season, joining a four-star influx of Brock Harris, Ty Goettsche and Roger Saleapaga II that suggests Kalani Sitake wants multiple big targets in the passing game rather than one workhorse. Noah Moeaki is the only returning holdover with any real receiving numbers, so the room's ceiling now rides on how fast the transfers and true freshmen blend in behind Lyons.
Fifteen sacks allowed and a top-40 rushing attack were built on a front that just lost Weylin Lapuaho, Isaiah Jatta, Sione Hingano, Jake Griffin and Ikinasio Tupou in one wave, but BYU still brings back the bulk of the room, with juniors Andrew Gentry, Kyle Sfarcioc, Austin Leausa, Bruce Mitchell and Sonny Makasini all in the mix. Kalani Sitake backfilled the losses with a loaded local haul, headlined by four-stars Bott Mulitalo and Jax Tanner alongside Paki Finau, Zak Yamauchi and tackle Jr Sia, giving the interior real competition even without a clear depth chart to lean on. With that much continuity up front, the explosiveness problem (106th nationally) looks more fixable than the protection did, and this line should keep the run game humming while the new blood pushes for early snaps.
BYU's front loses its two most productive linemen in Logan Lutui (50 tackles, 5 TFL) and John Taumoepeau (39 tackles), but this group was never about one name, it ran six deep in 2025 and still does. Bodie Schoonover (3 sacks, 5 TFL) and Keanu Tanuvasa (2 sacks, 4.5 TFL) are back as the interior and edge anchors, with Viliami Po'uha, Anisi Purcell, Nusi Taumoepeau and Tausili Akana all bringing real snaps forward too. Four-star Orem product Lopeti Moala arrives as the headline addition, but he's stepping into rotation depth, not a hole, on a line that finished 30th in rushing yards allowed and 38th in run-stuff rate.
Jack Kelly's 10 sacks and 13.5 TFL walk out the door, but Isaiah Glasker (63 tackles, 8.5 TFL) and Siale Esera return to anchor a group that helped BYU allow just 19.1 points a game a year ago. The real jolt is Cade Uluave, the 4-star transfer from California who piled up 97 tackles and 12 TFL and slots in as an immediate three-down difference-maker rather than a project. With Miles Hall, the Kaufusi cousins and a trio of freshmen filling out the depth, this unit trades its edge-rush production for raw sideline-to-sideline speed, a shift that should keep BYU's run defense stout even as its pass rush numbers take a step back.
Tanner Wall is gone, but BYU's secondary barely feels the dent because Faletau Satuala (79 tackles, 7.5 TFL) and Raider Damuni are both back to anchor a group that helped hold opponents to 19.1 points per game a year ago. Evan Johnson and Therrian Alexander III return outside to give Kalani Sitake four proven tacklers before a single newcomer plays a snap, and Mississippi State transfer Jayven Williams arrives with 18 tackles of live experience rather than as a projection. The passing-yardage number (210 per game, 50th) is the one soft spot, and it is this same returning group, not the incoming three-star freshmen, that has to close that gap in 2026.
Will Ferrin's departure leaves a real void after he hit 23 of 30 field goals and racked up 118 points, and neither Matthias Dunn nor Fuller Shurtz arrives with a track record to lean on. Shurtz has thrown one punt for a 41-yard average, so the placekicking job is essentially unproven territory for BYU in 2026. The one settled piece is Sam Vander Haar, who boomed 40 punts at a 42.6-yard clip and gives Kalani Sitake's staff a steady leg while the kicking competition sorts itself out.
BYU's 12-win season was built on Parker Kingston, Chase Roberts and Carsen Ryan combining for well over 2,000 receiving yards, and all three are gone, along with edge disruptor Jack Kelly's 10 sacks. Bear Bachmeier returns after throwing for 3,033 yards, but he now hands the ball to USC tight end transfer Walker Lyons and Oregon receiver Kyler Kasper while California linebacker Cade Uluave, who piled up 97 tackles and 12 TFL last year, plugs the void Kelly left behind. The talent turnover is real, but replacing that much production with proven transfer starters rather than unknowns is why this roster should not take the step back the exodus suggests.
Parker Kingston's 924 yards walk out the door, and BYU has no obvious replacement threat at receiver, which means LJ Martin has to carry the offense on the ground after his 1,305-yard, 12-touchdown season. Bear Bachmeier is the established passer and will play from that stability, but with the receiving corps thinned out, how much Martin can shoulder behind him decides whether this offense scores like a 12-2 team again.
Bettors cashed BYU tickets all year, a 10-4 spread record built on a 12-2 season under Kalani Sitake, but the deeper numbers say sell high. A 4-0 mark in one-score games and a plus turnover margin of +8 are exactly the kind of results that flatten out, and BYU's own conference-game yardage margin actually implied a 63.9% win rate against opponents they won 88.9% of the time. The offense also scored on a stingy 12.7 yards per point, well below the 14.1 league median, a form of efficiency that rarely holds, so books should expect a squad that wins fewer coin-flip games in 2026 even before accounting for whoever replaces last year's production.
