Dante Reno returns to run the offense, but Yale closing 13th in the final Coaches Poll while our model has them 15th entering 2026 says a defense that ranked 14th in scoring a year ago has more to prove than the poll voters think.
Who takes the handoffs now that Josh Pitsenberger and his 1571 yards and 19 touchdowns are gone? Dante Reno returns as the settled answer at quarterback, and with only 50.1% of the offensive production back, Yale's ground game is the bigger variable, but a proven passer at the controls should let Cahill lean on Reno to manage the loss rather than replace it outright. That balance, not a from-scratch backfield search, is what keeps this offense functional through the non-conference slate before Ivy play tightens.
Coming off a 9-3 season that included a 6-1 conference mark, Yale's 2026 ceiling gets settled at a neutral site against Harvard, a true coin-flip test that outweighs anything else on the slate. The road trip to Pennsylvania and a home date with Rhode Island are the other two spots where Kevin Cahill's team is favored but not comfortably so, and stacking wins there is what separates a good Ivy season from a great one. Everything else, including Merrimack, Brown and Princeton at home, projects as the kind of game a 7-3 team is supposed to win.

Nine wins, a 6-1 mark in league play, and a top-15 power rating tell a simple story: Kevin Cahill has Yale playing at a level the rest of the Ivy League has to answer for. This is not a program searching for identity, it is one that just posted its results and backed them up with a ranking that matches the record. The 2026 question is not whether Cahill's approach works, it clearly does, but whether Yale can stack another season on top of a nearly flawless conference campaign.
Dante Reno threw for 2,498 yards and 21 touchdowns last fall and comes back as the settled answer at quarterback, which lets Yale build its 2026 offense around known quantities rather than a guessing game. The bigger issue is the 10 interceptions and a turnover margin that ranked 83rd nationally, a leak that undercut a defense allowing just 19.6 points per game. If Reno tightens up the ball security, the rushing attack that ranked 29th in yards per game gives Yale a real floor on offense.
Dante Reno is back after throwing for 2,498 yards and 21 touchdowns, and that arm is exactly why Yale's offense could take a jump even though it sat 61st in passing yards per game and 70th in explosiveness a year ago. Reno's 10 interceptions are the thing to clean up, and Charlie Hewitt gives Kevin Cahill a proven backup already in the building rather than an unknown. Callum Schweitzer, a three-star signee out of Los Gatos, and Brayden Knight, in from De La Salle, add to the room without threatening Reno's grip on the job, and the more relevant swing factor is whether Yale's 176 rushing yards per game ground attack keeps taking pressure off him on third down, where the offense already converted at a 44.7% clip.
Josh Pitsenberger's 1,571 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door, and nothing on the returning depth chart hints at a replacement of that scale. Hugo Djeumeni Kemeni managed just 43 yards last season and Cuttler Adams only 7, while Adam Pandolfi has no prior statistics on file, so Kevin Cahill is piecing together production almost from scratch behind a line that still ranked 29th nationally in rushing yards per game. That gap between what the ground game produced in 2025 and who is actually back to run it is the real story here, and it likely pushes Yale's 210-yard passing attack to carry more of the offensive weight in 2026.
Nico Brown's 71 catches, 1,085 yards and 11 touchdowns walk out the door, and no one else in this room sniffed that kind of production last fall. Jaxton Santiago, who caught 50 balls for 687 yards and 5 scores, becomes the clear top target by default rather than by having already proven he can carry a passing game that ranked just 61st nationally through the air. Lucius Anderson adds a modest complementary piece off his 216 yards, and Evan Morton arrives as an incoming high school prospect out of Alta with no college stats yet, meaning Yale's answer to replacing Brown's yardage has to come from within this returning group before it comes from outside it.
Graham Smith's 9 catches for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns made him the most productive of the returning tight ends, and he heads back into a room that also brings back Brady Wagner along with Hutch Chipman, Colton Sanders and Robby Tattersall. The production Yale actually loses here is minimal, since Spencer Mermans' lone catch was the only other statistical mark among the departed group. That stability matters for a passing game that ranked just 61st in yards per game and 70th in explosiveness, since Smith gives Kevin Cahill's offense a proven target to lean on as it tries to add more juice to the vertical passing attack.
Yale's line pushed a 176 yard rushing attack that ranked 29th nationally last season, but six linemen are out the door, including both departed tackles Michael Bennett III and Michael Bennett, so Kevin Cahill is piecing together protection around whoever of AD Adelabu, Bennett Anderson, Zavier Avera, Kevin Cassidy and Sam Connelly holds up as first-team material. That ground game success came with real hiccups in space, evident in a 41.8% success rate that sat 49th nationally, and with no incoming production data to lean on, the safest bet is that 2026 opens with more question marks up front than the rushing numbers alone would suggest.
Yale's line held opponents to 5.12 yards per play (16th nationally) and 126 rushing yards a game last fall, and the group tasked with repeating that gets built around Erik Ekens inside and Xavier Coleman off the edge. Cooper Austin, Jackson Boone, James Cave and Babawale Fadeyibi all return as well, giving Kevin Cahill a rotation with real snaps together even as Jack Michalik, Micaiah Shaber, Dylan Yang, Ejiroghene Egodogbare and Ezekiel Larry are no longer in the room. The bigger question is the pass rush: opponents still moved the ball through the air at a 65th-ranked clip allowed, so Coleman and Ekens have to turn that stout run defense into pressure that shows up on passing downs too.
Yale's front seven held up its end of a 9-3 run by allowing just 126 rushing yards a game, 21st nationally, and the group tasked with keeping that going is largely intact. Joseph Barry, Alex Kraus, Joe McCord, Eddie Palumbo, Steven Partin and Lucas Price all return without needing to replace their own production, even with Inumidun Ayo-Durojaiye and Melik Williams gone from the room. The bigger question is the 65th-ranked pass defense, where this same linebacker corps has to hold up in coverage more than it did behind a unit that kept opponents off schedule on just 39.6% of snaps.
Yale's back end stayed on schedule against only 39.6% of opponent snaps last year, yet still finished 14th nationally in points allowed per game, a gap between chaos-creation and actual bend-don't-break results that Kevin Cahill's unit will try to close in 2026. The answer is continuity: Brady Carson returns at safety alongside a full stable of returning corners in Brandon Banks, Charles Barkley-Smith, Osize Daniyan, Billy Eastep and Phoenix Grant, with DaQuan Gonzales and Joshua Tarver the only pieces to replace. Fort Bend Ridge Point's Ethan Washington and Frisco's Jalaal Abdullah arrive at safety, and with the pass defense ranked 65th in yards allowed against a run defense at 21st, the priority is tightening coverage rather than replacing whole position groups.
Noah Piper settled the placekicking job last fall, hitting 12 of 14 attempts and stretching one out to 50 yards while adding 67 points to Yale's ledger. Reese Keeney matched him on punts, booting 41 of them at a 41.4-yard clip, giving Kevin Cahill two proven legs back for 2026 even as Nick Conforti, who was just 1 of 1 on field goals, is gone. With snappers Colby Connell and Joey Fortner also back, the operation around Piper and Keeney is intact rather than in need of repair.
Josh Pitsenberger's 1571 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door with no transfer arriving to soften the blow, so Yale's run game is the swing factor for 2026. Dante Reno throwing to Jaxton Santiago keeps the passing attack humming, but if the ground production does not surface from within, defenses will sit on Reno's 10 interceptions and dare Yale to replicate a 9-3 season through the air alone.
Yale went 9-3 straight up but bettors only cashed at a 55% clip overall, and the split tells the real story: Kevin Cahill's team went 6-0 at home and covered 67% of the time there, while road trips produced a losing 40% cover rate despite a 3-3 mark on the field. Backing the Bulldogs as road underdogs paid off at 67%, and the market has been slow to adjust after a loss, where Yale covered both chances at 100%. The conference slate is where the number gets tricky, a 6-1 record against Ivy foes that still went 3-4 against the spread, meaning Cahill's team keeps winning close enough to leave backers short.
