MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthland · Blaine McCorkle · 1-11 last season · No. 114 in our FCS ratings
Blaine McCorkle inherits a defense that leaked 41.6 points per game a year ago, and until that number moves, Abram Johnston's offense will never get the margin it needs against Southland competition.
Can Abram Johnston turn a unit that needed 21.2 yards for every point into one that actually cashes drives? The 1-11 record buried a team that lost the close ones 0-3 and got hammered by a -5 turnover margin, both signs of bad luck more than bad football, and Johnston returning as the settled starter gives this offense the continuity to convert that same volume into points instead of stalled drives. The bigger worry is a defense that let opponents score too cheaply, but the buy-low case here is real, and it starts with Johnston finishing what the offense already moves the ball to do.
Coming off an 0-8 conference mark, Northwestern State's 2026 slate does not offer much of a bridge back to respectability. The season turns on three road trips: at Louisiana Tech (2% win), at Stephen F. Austin (5% win) and at Lamar (13% win) are the games that will decide whether Blaine McCorkle's group is actually improving or just cycling through the same results. A home date with Houston Christian (50% win) stands as the closest thing to a coin-flip on a board otherwise stacked against the Demons.

Blaine McCorkle's first season produced a 1-11 mark and an 0-8 trip through Southland play, with a power rating (No. 114) that matched the eye test. That kind of season leaves almost nothing to build on statistically, so 2026 is about the incoming pieces rather than anything already on campus, and the unit rankings simply have to move for the record to follow. An experienced secondary is the one group with real snaps under it, but the offense and front seven need the new arrivals to hit immediately for Northwestern State to look different than it did in year one.
A 1-11 record hid a team that was closer than it looked: Northwestern State lost three one-score games and gave away the ball at a -5 margin, both the kind of bad luck that tends to swing back. The bigger issue was an offense that ranked 124th in points per game and needed 21.2 yards per point scored, converting yardage into points at a brutal rate even when it moved the ball. Abram Johnston is the man running that offense in 2026, and the real swing factor is a defense that allowed opponents to score cheaply (11.1 yards per point against) even though it held its own in conference yardage margin relative to its actual results, a gap that points to more losses ahead in Southland play even as the overall trajectory improves.
Abram Johnston is the established starter for a passing game that produced only 118 yards per game and a 25.2% third-down rate a year ago, numbers that made Northwestern State's offense one of the least efficient in the country. The staff added Charlotte transfer Zach Wilcke (296 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT) and 3-star signee Luke Delafield for depth behind him, but the job belongs to Johnston, and the offense's fortunes ride on him finding more explosive plays than last season's middling 1.20 mark per successful play. With Eli Anderson gone, Johnston inherits a unit whose sack protection was actually solid at 3 allowed, meaning the passing struggles were about output, not pressure, and that is squarely on the quarterback to fix in 2026.
A ground game that managed just 105 rushing yards per game and a 4.01 mark in yards per play a season ago loses its top two rushers, Myion Hicks (311 yards) and Kolbe Burrell (263 yards, 1 TD), along with Zay Davis and fullback Matthew Broad. Incoming signee Marcus Gadlin III arrives out of Katy Cinco Ranch with no college statistics yet, meaning the early carries fall to whichever experienced backs remain in the room rather than a proven producer. Given an offense that ranked 112th in rushing yards per game and 124th in overall success rate, Blaine McCorkle needs the run game to at least stabilize third downs, where Northwestern State converted only 25.2% a year ago.
A passing game that managed just 118 yards per game and a 25.2% third-down rate last season lost its only real threat when Ty Moore (12 catches, 232 yards, 4 TD) departed, taking the room's lone touchdown production with him. Northwestern State turns to the portal and high school ranks to answer that, bringing in Jamal Cooney from Dartmouth and Jonathan Craven from Klein Oak, neither with prior stats on file. Blaine McCorkle needs one of those two to produce quickly, because an offense already ranked 123rd in passing yards per game cannot survive replacing its top target with total unknowns.
Ryan Tyler's modest line, 6 rushing yards and a touchdown, still represented the position's only real production on an offense that finished 124th in yards per play at 4.01 and converted just 25.2% of third downs. Vincent Canzano arrives from The Colony with no prior college stats to his name, meaning the tight end room's contribution to any 2026 turnaround is unproven on paper. For an attack averaging 118 passing yards a game, whatever Canzano offers as a receiving threat matters more than what a traditional blocking tight end could add.
A line that produced 4.01 yards per play and 105 rushing yards per game a year ago left Blaine McCorkle little choice but to shop the portal for interior help, and he landed two starters worth of it in Jo Cryer from McNeese and Tyrone McDuffie from UTEP. Both slot into a group that loses Caleb Billiot and Guadalupe Cedillo up front, and neither arrives with a stat line to lean on, so the bet is on fit rather than track record. Given that Northwestern State's offense finished 124th in yards per play and third down rate last season, even modest push from Cryer and McDuffie changes the math for whoever lines up behind them in 2026.
A defense that allowed 7.07 yards per play (123rd) and let opponents stay on schedule at a rate ranking 123rd nationally did not lack for warning signs up front, and the whole two-deep that produced those numbers is gone from the room. Tyler Lewis, Preston Hickey, Clinton Anokwuru, Jeremiah Bodwin and Cam George all depart, taking with them what little disruption this line managed. Liberty transfer Donovan Dozier arrives to anchor the edge, and with a rushing defense that gave up 248 yards a game (122nd), his get-off and ability to set an edge matter more than any modest tackle total he posted a year ago.
Blaine McCorkle's defense allowed 248 rushing yards a game and 7.07 yards per play, marks that had opponents staying on schedule 51.9% of the time, and the linebacker corps was part of that collapse. Kolbe Cage's 13 tackles and Landry Huddleston's 6 tackles and half a tackle for loss are both gone, thin production to begin with on a group that finished 122nd in points allowed per game. With the pass defense a relative bright spot at 61st in yards allowed, the rebuild at linebacker matters most against the run, where Northwestern State was 122nd nationally and has to find answers fast.
A secondary that allowed 213 passing yards per game a year ago, good for 61st nationally even as the rest of the defense collapsed to 461 total yards and 41.6 points allowed, gets reinforcements rather than an overhaul. Tywon Wray Jr. arrives from South Alabama and Damarion Cooper joins from Waxahachie to help replace departed safeties Je'Careon Lathan and Christian Williams and cornerback Caesar Magee III. The bigger problem for Blaine McCorkle's back end was never the pass defense ranking, it was a front that let opponents stay on schedule 51.9% of the time and run for 248 yards a game, putting defensive backs in coverage far longer than any secondary should have to hold up.
A one-win season left little room for special teams to matter, and that field position problem starts with a kicking game that gave Northwestern State no margin for error in close Southland games. Blaine McCorkle's staff has not added a name via transfer at kicker or punter in the data available, so the coverage units and specialists on hand will have to prove they can flip field position that consistently tilted against the Demons in 2025. Until a transfer arrival changes that math, the punt and kick return game stands as the clearest lever McCorkle has to find extra possessions in a league where NSU went 0-8.
Northwestern State's 2026 season rests on Abram Johnston, the established starting quarterback tasked with lifting an offense that finished 1-11 with almost nothing at running back after Myion Hicks' 311 yards walk out the door. A 201-ranked class and a six-man transfer haul, headlined by safety Tywon Wray Jr., signal the Demons are patching holes everywhere else, which only raises the stakes on Johnston to be the steady constant a rebuilding roster leans on.
A 1-11 season under Blaine McCorkle did not even leave bettors a hiding spot: Northwestern State covered just 33% of its games overall, and the letdown pattern is specific, going 3-7 against the number the week after a loss. The road underdog role produced the lone flicker of competence at 43%, but home was worse than the record implied at 1-4 against the spread, and conference play brought an 0-8 straight-up collapse with covers in only two of eight tries. Ranked opponents erased the Demons outright, 0-3 against the spread with zero backdoor scores, and until the roster turnover on both sides actually shows up on the field, backing Northwestern State in any spot remains the riskiest number on the board.
