MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthland · Tommy Rybacki · 4-8 last season · No. 60 in our FCS ratings
Tommy Rybacki has a defense that held up well enough to rank 45th in scoring defense while his offense sank to 105th, and until that 18.3-point average climbs, a power rating of 60 nationally is a ceiling Nicholls will not push through.
Can Christian Arceneaux carry an offense that returns just 29.7% of its production? The likelier path is a grind-it-out year where Arceneaux leans on a defense that kept Nicholls competitive, since 82.7% of that unit comes back intact and can cover for growing pains on the other side of the ball. Nicholls wins in 2026 if that defensive carryover buys Arceneaux time to develop, not if the offense is asked to carry the load itself.
The trip to Kansas State is a paycheck game and nothing more, but the season's real identity gets forged in the Southland grind that follows. Nicholls draws Sam Houston on the road and Stephen F. Austin at home, both toss-up-or-worse spots that will decide whether Tommy Rybacki's group builds on last year's 4-3 league mark or slides back. Throw in a manageable stretch against Lamar, McNeese and SE Louisiana, all within a few points of a coin flip, and a 5-7 projection feels like it hinges entirely on how many of those close ones break Nicholls' way.

A 4-8 overall mark masks the more useful number for Nicholls: a 4-3 league record that says Tommy Rybacki's group was competitive inside the Southland even while losing the non-conference math. The power rating settles at a middling No. 60, which lines up with a team that could hang in league play but couldn't turn that into a winning season. Heading into 2026, the path back to a plus record runs through the same conference schedule where this staff already showed it could compete.
Nicholls won the turnover battle at a +7 clip and let opponents pass for just 166 yards a game, propping up a team that still finished 4-8. None of that mattered because the offense could not stay on schedule, ranking 98th in success rate and 93rd on third downs while scoring only 18.3 points a night. Christian Arceneaux projects as the 2026 quarterback with no prior stats on record, and the whole season turns on whether he can turn a defense that plays clean into points, not just stops.
Christian Arceneaux takes over an offense that managed just 166 passing yards per game and a 34.1 percent third-down rate a year ago, numbers that helped keep Nicholls at 105th nationally in scoring. There is no competition to speak of, Arceneaux is the clear QB1 for 2026 with Jackson Firmin, Ean Rodrigue and Preston Welch behind him, none of whom have prior stats on file. With Deuce Hogan's production gone, the job is squarely Arceneaux's to turn that anemic passing output into something that actually stresses a defense.
Corey Warren Jr. paced this backfield with just 79 rushing yards and a single touchdown last year, a modest total that mirrors an offense stuck at 142 rushing yards per game, 70th nationally. Jordan Poole, DK Kency Jr. and Damondrick Blackburn all return with only trace production, so Tommy Rybacki is leaning on volume and competition rather than a proven workhorse. Brusly product Patrick Gales arrives with no college stats yet, but he joins a room where the bar for winning carries is low enough that he could push straight into the rotation.
Scrappy Osby's 36 catches for 295 yards were the closest thing to a passing identity Nicholls had in an offense that finished 104th in passing yards per game and 98th in success rate. Solo Lewis adds a proven complement with 18 grabs, but Dany'e Brooks converting just 3 catches into a touchdown hints at the big-play scarcity behind Osby, and unproven names like Jason Barnes Jr., Amari Clayton and Jackson Dufrene carry no track record to change that. Until this group forces more explosive plays than last year's 82nd-ranked explosiveness mark, Tommy Rybacki's offense stays capped around the 18.3 points per game it managed in 2025.
Pax Hughes caught just 5 passes for 28 yards last season, and the bigger production, Everett Hunter's 24 catches for 283 yards and 3 scores, is gone. Nicholls hands the room to Hughes alongside Jeffrey Diedrich, Carsen Hebert, Noah Onyia, Jack Purser and Treylin Whaley, none of whom have a catch on record, plus UTSA transfer Devin Scura. With a passing attack that ranked 104th in yards per game a year ago, whoever emerges as a receiving threat at tight end would be a new wrinkle rather than a restored one.
A line that managed just 4.87 yards per play and 166 passing yards per game last fall gets two new tackles to lean on in 2026, with Charlie Ward arriving from Walker and Cylis Hill joining from Vandebilt Catholic to fill the void left by Ja'Mard Jones Jr.'s departure. Troy transfer Malik Ellis adds an interior piece to a group that ranked 104th in passing yards per game and 93rd in third-down rate, numbers that point to protection issues as much as scheme. Tommy Rybacki is betting the transfer market fixes the tackle spots faster than developing bodies already on campus, and the run game, which finished a respectable 70th in rushing yards per game, should be the foundation this rebuilt front leans on while the passing numbers catch up.
Nicholls held opponents to 5.39 yards per play and just 166 passing yards a game a year ago, numbers that mask real churn up front now that Rasheed Lovelace, Joseph Mason and Joe Mason are all gone from the line. Grant Merritt arrives from Fort Bend Travis to help replenish the room, but the production Lovelace provided in stops and disruption has to come from somewhere else on the depth chart. The rush defense, already just 85th in yards allowed per game, is the number to watch given how much turnover this front absorbed.
Nicholls held opponents to 166 passing yards a game, seventh nationally, but the run defense gave up 176 yards on the ground, a soft spot that made 41.4 percent of opponent plays stay on schedule. That's the gap Damari Drake, a 3-star signee out of Evangel Christian Academy, has to help close in the box. The frontline numbers, 24.9 points and 343 total yards allowed per game, were respectable, and shoring up the rush lanes is what turns that into a defense that dictates down and distance rather than reacts to it.
Nicholls' secondary was the quiet strength of a 4-8 team, holding opponents to 166 passing yards a game, seventh nationally, even as the run defense lagged at 85th. That aerial lockdown is why the addition of Jhamal Shelby Jr., who logged 47 tackles at Louisiana Tech in 2025, matters more than his modest tackle total suggests, he slots into a corner spot behind a group that already knew how to keep plays in front of it. The bigger question for Tommy Rybacki is whether an experienced secondary can carry that same passing-down discipline forward while the front seven figures out the run problem that dragged the overall defense to 343 yards allowed per game.
Nicholls has three placekickers on the roster in Sean Hebert, Gabriel Showalter and Zachry Sugandi-Truitt, none carrying a stat line yet, so Tommy Rybacki's staff has an actual competition to settle rather than a clear incumbent. Punter Pharrell Harewood and long snapper Joshua Bellanger are both back, giving the kicking operation continuity even without production numbers to lean on, while a second snapper, Craig Roth, provides insurance behind him. The one subtraction of note is snapper William Stewart, but with two snappers and three kicking options already in the building, this looks more like a battle for a job than a unit searching for answers.
Deuce Hogan's departure leaves Nicholls without a proven passer, and Christian Arceneaux steps in as the projected starter with no prior stats to lean on. His development decides whether Scrappy Osby, who caught 36 balls for 295 yards, and Solo Lewis actually produce or go quiet, since neither receiver has ever had a real quarterback to work with beyond last year's numbers. A shaky transition at the position undercuts everything else on this roster, including a defense hoping Jhamal Shelby Jr. and returners Ethan Lee and Hayden Shaheen can hold up their end.
Tommy Rybacki's crew went winless away from Thibodaux, dropping all seven road games straight up and covering just 40% of the time as visitors, but flip the venue and the story changes completely: four wins and a 3-2 cover mark at home. Conference play brought the same split personality, a 4-3 mark against the number that mirrored the record on the field. The bigger red flag for bettors is the letdown factor, a 2-5 cover mark the week after a loss that shows this team rarely bounces back sharp.
