MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsBig Sky · Ed Lamb · 4-8 last season · No. 39 in our FCS ratings
Northern Colorado's power rating of 39 sits nowhere near a four-win season, so the gap between talent and last year's 2-6 conference finish is the real story heading into 2026.
Can Eric Gibson Jr. spread the ball around enough to cover for Carver Cheeks's exit, given an offense that returns barely half its production from a year ago? The likelier path is a committee approach rather than one receiver stepping into that void, since nobody else in the passing game is established as a go-to target. That puts more weight on Gibson Jr. himself to manufacture completions against defenses that no longer have to gameplan around a single receiver.
The season turns on three road trips: at Wyoming (15%), at Montana (15%) and a home date with Montana State (18%) that bookend the toughest stretch on Ed Lamb's slate, ranked 10th in difficulty. Northern Colorado gets softer spots to build on, projected favorites at home against Weber State (58%) and Utah Tech (68%), but neither erases the reality that the Big Sky's top-tier teams still have this group's number. A 4-8 projection matches last year's mark, and until Lamb's group actually beats one of those three low-probability tests, that ceiling holds.

Northern Colorado finished 4-8 and 2-6 in Big Sky play, yet Ed Lamb's team graded out at No. 39 nationally in power rating, a number that clashes hard with a losing conference mark. That gap is the whole story here: this looked closer to a competitive Big Sky squad than an eight-loss team on paper, and 2026 is the year to find out whether the results catch up to the underlying performance. If they do not, the losing record and league mark stay the headline instead of the rating.
Northern Colorado went 4-8 last year despite yardage and turnover numbers that point toward a better team than the record shows, and 2026 is the bounce-back opportunity. The offense needed 17.7 yards per point scored against a 13.9 league median, evidence a unit built around Eric Gibson Jr. left points on the field rather than lacking production, since his 2,502 yards through the air ranked 38th nationally in passing yards per game. A defense that bent without breaking, allowing opponents 14.3 yards per point, and a turnover margin unlikely to stay this negative both argue Ed Lamb's team was closer to competitive than 2-6 in conference play suggests.
Eric Gibson Jr. holds the job outright in 2026, which matters because Northern Colorado's passing game was actually a strength last season at 234 yards per game (38th nationally) even as the offense stalled at 20.3 points and a 125-yard rushing attack ranked 96th. That imbalance is why the addition of Keegan Patterson, who threw for 1,557 yards at Indiana State, reads as insurance and competition for snaps rather than a QB1 change, giving Ed Lamb a proven arm to lean on if the ground game keeps sputtering. The bigger swing factor is turnover at the position behind Gibson, with Peter Costelli, Kia'i Keone and Levi Durrell all gone, leaving Gibson as the only passer with real starting equity walking into fall camp.
Ed Lamb's ground game already ranked 96th in rushing yards per game a year ago, and the production that did exist is now gone with Brandon Johnson (319 yards, 6 TD) and Justin Guin (284 yards, 1 TD) both off the roster. That leaves Northern Colorado's 125 rushing yards per game with no proven name behind it heading into 2026, a real problem for an offense that already leaned on its passing attack (234 yards per game, 38th nationally) to cover for a run game that couldn't consistently move the chains. Unless a transfer addition emerges as a workhorse, this looks like another year where Northern Colorado wins or loses through the air.
Northern Colorado's passing game held up well enough last year (234 yards per game, 38th nationally) but its top two producers, Dawson Menegatti and Luke Wooten, are both gone, leaving zero returning statistical production at receiver. That void gets filled by name recognition rather than numbers: Keenan Campbell, Dylan Evans, Jamir Ford, Cleve Johnson IV, Roshawn Lacy and Evan Morris are all back without a catch on file, and San Diego State transfer Marcus Mozer arrives to add a proven college body to the room. With an offense that already struggled to stay explosive (90th in explosiveness) and move the chains (84th on third downs), Mozer's transfer experience gives Ed Lamb the most tangible reason to think this passing attack can find a rhythm even as it breaks in an entirely unproven receiving corps.
Charles Garrison's 27 catches for 329 yards and two scores walk out the door, along with Hank Gibbs' work as a blocking-and-rushing option, leaving Brody Judd as the only tight end with a catch on record (2 for 43 yards). Wyatt Dean, Kolby Howard and Spensor Sharp all return without a target to their name, so Ed Lamb is betting the room grows into bigger roles rather than plugging in a proven pass-catcher. That's a real gap for an offense that already ran the ball just 125 yards a game (96th nationally) and leaned on a 234-yard passing attack, since Judd's group now has to create some of that production itself.
Northern Colorado's ground game stalled at 125 yards per game on the way to a 96th-ranked rushing offense, and five linemen who took those snaps are gone, including Jack Bacon, James Betschart, McKel Brumfield, Quintin Robinson and Frank Thompson. Ed Lamb brings in Asher Bancroft, a 3-star interior lineman from Chaparral, and tackle Asher Gardzelewski from Green Mountain to fill that void, though neither has logged a college snap. The passing game held up at 234 yards per game, so the priority for this rebuilt front is clear: give quarterback the protection to keep that number intact while finding any push at all on the ground.
Northern Colorado's front let opponents stay on schedule at a 45.6% clip (102nd nationally) and gave up 200 rushing yards a game, a 112th-ranked number that made every third down a formality for Big Sky rushing attacks. The losses of Garrett Bean and Solomon Wacays up front only raise the stakes on whether Ed Lamb can find bodies who can actually reset the line of scrimmage, since the pass rush at least kept things respectable against the pass, 208 yards allowed per game through the air, 49th nationally. Fixing the run fits is the whole story here, not the box score numbers that already look tidy on paper.
Run defense was the problem last season, 200 yards a game on the ground ranking 112th nationally, and the departures of Zach Nowatzke, Sione Tuha and Keenan Guthrie strip out the tackle production Ed Lamb has to replace at the position. Lincoln Hageman arrives from Erie to help fill that void, though he brings no statistical track record yet at this level. Until Northern Colorado shows it can control the point of attack better than 5.90 yards allowed per play, the linebacker corps stays the unit most likely to decide whether the Big Sky move starts with a competitive defense or another year of chunk runs.
Franky Morales anchors the back end after a defense that gave up 200 rushing yards per game (112th) and let opponents stay on schedule 45.6% of the time, numbers that point to tackling issues more than a talent gap in the secondary. Evan Harrell, Derrick Jones, Mikhail Benner, Nathaniel Gillis and Myles McClarity all return at corner and safety, but none carries more than three tackles into 2026, so the production Darrell Bryant Jr. and Cam Chapa put up (8 tackles apiece) has to come from somewhere else on the roster. Zion Wallace, a high school signee out of Cajon, adds a fresh body at safety, but this group's ceiling in 2026 depends on the returning names above translating snaps into tackles, not on outside reinforcements.
Jacob Willig's departure takes 13 of 17 field goals and 63 points off the books, leaving Benson Ashley to take over placekicking duties with no attempts on record to lean on. The punting job stays with Leo Blumentritt, whose 43.3-yard average on 57 punts made him a weapon Ed Lamb could count on last season and gives this unit its one proven leg. Maddox Broughton returns at long snapper, so the new piece to solve is strictly Willig's replacement at kicker.
Eric Gibson Jr. threw for 2,502 yards last fall but tossed 11 interceptions against 11 touchdowns, and Northern Colorado brought in Keegan Patterson from Indiana State as a real answer if that ratio does not flip. Gibson also loses his top target in Carver Cheeks, who caught 71 passes for 929 yards and 6 scores, so whichever quarterback plays has to build new chemistry without a proven bailout receiver. With Mathias Price, Aliou-Rocco Traore and Kieryus Boone all back in the backfield, the ground game can support Gibson, but this offense goes only as far as his turnovers allow.
Northern Colorado went 4-8 straight up but the number that actually matters for bettors is 5-2 against the spread on the road, including a 71% cover mark as a road underdog. Ed Lamb's team was the opposite story at home, covering just once in four tries for a 25% clip, so the road number is not noise, it is the identity. Conference play remained a losing proposition against the number at 3-5, which means the road-dog value has to be found outside Big Sky lines, not inside them.
