Walker Harris leads an offense that already scored at a top-15 clip in 2025, and with 80 percent of the roster back, North Carolina Central's real jump has to come on the other side of the ball, where a defense giving up 25.7 points per game sits stuck at 54th nationally in scoring defense.
Can North Carolina Central's defense hold its footing with only 60.8% of its production back, after DB Malcolm Reed and his unit depart? The most likely path is a step back in continuity early, since replacing that much snap experience on one side of the ball rarely happens seamlessly, but with Walker Harris and a fully intact offense keeping games out of reach, the drop-off should show up in style points more than in the win column.
North Carolina Central comes off an 8-4 season and 3-2 in conference, but the softest part of 2026 sits outside league play, not in it. The trip to East Carolina is essentially unwinnable on paper at just a 2% shot, and the real swing games are on the road at South Carolina State (37%) and Gardner-Webb (38%), both true toss-up-or-worse tests against FCS peers. A projected 6-6 mark under Trei Oliver reflects a MEAC slate that still favors NCCU against North Carolina A&T, Howard and Morgan State, but how Central fares in those two road MEAC-adjacent grinders will say more about this team than the FBS blowout ever could.

Trei Oliver closed 2025 at 8-4 overall and 3-2 in league play, a winning season that keeps the program on solid footing heading into 2026. The power rating sits at a neutral #67, which reads as a program that held its ground rather than surged, but the conference mark and the winning record both cut in the staff's favor. Nothing in the results points to instability, just a coach coming off a solid year with a real foundation to build from.
Walker Harris comes back after throwing for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns, and that continuity is why an offense that ranked 11th nationally in passing yards per game should keep humming in 2026. The bigger swing factor is the defense, which finished 79th in tackles for loss and 90th in turnover margin a year ago despite forcing opponents off schedule at a top-five clip. If that pressure ever turns into actual takeaways and negative plays, this roster has the quarterback to turn it into a MEAC title push rather than another 8-4 finish.
Walker Harris is back under center after quarterbacking an Eagles offense that put up 33.8 points and 272 passing yards a game, numbers that ranked 15th and 11th nationally. That kind of production returning outright, with no quarterback competition to sort through, lets Trei Oliver build the entire 2026 attack around timing and rhythm rather than evaluation. The bigger swing factor is tightening the operation, since a 43.8% success rate and modest 1.30 explosiveness mark show this offense still leaves plays on the field even when the scoreboard looks explosive.
Trei Oliver's offense leaned on the ground game to the tune of 152 rushing yards a night, but the bulk of that production churned through backs no longer in the room. That leaves an experienced backfield built more on continuity than star power to keep an offense that ranked 15th nationally in scoring humming, even as the passing game (11th in yards per game) carried more of the load than the run last fall. With rushing efficiency the softer number on the offensive report card, this is the phase of the attack Oliver has to sharpen for the Eagles to stay balanced in MEAC play.
Chauncey Spikes (48 catches, 664 yards, 9 TD) and Mehki Wall (28 catches, 510 yards, 4 TD) both come back to anchor a passing attack that ranked 11th nationally in passing yards per game a year ago, and that continuity matters more than any turnover elsewhere in this room. Quentin McCall adds a proven third option after a modest 8-catch, 114-yard season, giving Trei Oliver's offense a full complement of returning production rather than a rebuild at receiver. The bigger question is explosiveness, since NCCU's offense ranked just 47th nationally in explosive-play value, and it will fall on Spikes and Wall to turn steady volume into more chunk plays in 2026.
Luke Bracey and Kyle Morgan are back after modest but efficient 2025 lines (Bracey 8-53-1, Morgan 6-47-1), and neither needs to become a focal point for this passing game to hum again. North Carolina Central threw for 272 yards a game (11th nationally) largely through its receivers, so the tight ends' job is blocking support and situational targets rather than volume. William Brown, Connor Everett and Rodney Lesane return without a stat line, giving Trei Oliver bodies who already know the offense as it tries to push its 43.8% success rate and 6.28 yards per play higher in 2026.
Trei Oliver's attack put up 33.8 points and 272 passing yards per game in 2025, numbers built on a line that has to replace both Ja'Quan Sprinkle inside and tackle Trevon Humphrey without any transfer additions on file to plug those spots. The rushing game was already the soft spot in that equation, sitting 59th in yards per game while the pass game carried the offense, and losing an interior starter and a tackle in the same offseason threatens to tilt that imbalance further. Everything about this unit's ceiling in 2026 comes down to whoever settles in at those two vacated spots, since the passing success this offense leans on starts with protection up front.
North Carolina Central's front kept opponents off schedule better than all but three defenses in the country a year ago, but none of the individual production behind that number returns to campus, with Thomas Johnson and Donquarius Parker both gone off a unit that finished 57th in yards per play allowed. Trei Oliver goes to the portal to answer that, landing edge Taeshawn Alston from South Carolina and lineman KJ Liles from App State to reset the room. Neither arrives with a stat line to lean on, so the 2026 line's ability to hold up on early downs will ride on how fast that pair translates its talent into the disruption this defense built its identity around.
This defense kept opponents off schedule at an elite clip in 2025, the No. 4 mark nationally in stopping plays from staying on schedule, even while allowing 135 yards per game on the ground, 35th nationally. That baseline gives Trei Oliver a front seven with real coverage discipline already established, and the staff added St. Thomas transfer Jeremiah Laguerre to the room. His college production is not yet on the board, but slotting a transfer linebacker into a defense that ranked 36th in total yards allowed suggests Oliver is layering talent onto structure rather than starting over.
North Carolina Central's defense kept opponents off schedule better than almost anyone in the country last season, ranking 4th in that category even while allowing 25.7 points and 5.66 yards per play. That disruption has to keep coming from the back end, where Anthony Fisher returns as the only DB with a stat line on file, and Nyzir Bostick, Bubba Camp, Ayden Davis, Jahzir Dukes and D.J. Estes all come back with no recorded production to lean on. Malcolm Reed's departure removes the group's most productive tackler, but Trei Oliver's secondary showed last year it can win on scheme and angles even when the box score does not fill up.
Brandon Bowman and Kaleb Robison both return at placekicker with no statistical track record on file, leaving Trei Oliver to sort out the job by what he sees on the practice field rather than a proven leg. The long-snapper spot is set with Lincoln Frederick and Jonathan Kuriyan both back, so at least the mechanics behind the kicking game carry over even as the numbers behind the kicker competition remain a blank slate. For a team coming off an 8-4 season, the special-teams answers this fall come down to which of the two kickers Oliver trusts in a close MEAC game.
Harris threw for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, but the 9 interceptions are the number that decides whether North Carolina Central takes a real step forward or just repeats an 8-4 finish. With Chris Mosley and Arthur Rodgers Jr. both back in the backfield and Chauncey Spikes still the main target outside, the run support and receiving pieces are in place for Harris to protect the ball and let this offense carry a roster that only lost three players to the portal.
North Carolina Central won on the road as often as it lost at home, and bettors who backed Trei Oliver's team away from Durham cashed at a 67% clip while going 5-1 straight up. Back home, the story flips hard: 0-4 against the spread, including a winless 0-4 mark as a favorite, even with the Eagles going 2-3 on the field there. An 8-4 season with a losing overall cover rate says this team is live away and a trap when the number expects them to roll at home.
