MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSWAC · Alonzo Hampton · 3-8 last season · No. 117 in our FCS ratings
Alonzo Hampton is trying to fix a defense that gave up 35.5 points a game in 2025, and until that number moves, Garrison Davis and a rated 117th roster are fighting for scraps in the SWAC.
Can an offense that returns just 56.5% of its production hold up while Garrison Davis gets his first real run as the guy under center? The likelier outcome is a rough stretch early, since so much of what worked last season left with Christian Peters, and Davis has to build chemistry with a mostly retooled group in real time. Arkansas-Pine Bluff's path back toward .500 in SWAC play runs through how fast that offense finds its footing, not through any single breakout game.
The trip to Missouri is unwinnable on paper and exists to fund the program, not to shape it. The real season plays out in the SWAC gauntlet against Alabama State at home and Prairie View A&M at home, two games where Arkansas-Pine Bluff is projected as an underdog but not overmatched, at 17% and 25% respectively. A trip to Southern, sitting at a 50% coin flip, is the truer measure of where Alonzo Hampton's group stands, and splitting that kind of game is what separates a repeat of 3-8 from actual progress.

Alonzo Hampton closed 2025 at 3-8 overall and 2-6 in SWAC play, numbers that put the Golden Lions at No. 117 in the power ratings and leave little margin for another slow start in 2026. That conference mark matters more than the overall record here, since a 2-6 league finish in the SWAC is the kind of gap that shows up directly in the standings, not just the ratings. The path forward for Hampton runs through cutting into that league deficit before the national number moves at all.
Garrison Davis is projected to run an offense that managed just 19.0 points per game and a 37.2% success rate last season, numbers that put Arkansas-Pine Bluff among the nation's least efficient attacks. He has only 86 passing yards to his name so far, so 2026 is less about picking up where a proven guy left off than building an identity from a run game that at least cracked 145 yards per game. With a defense that allowed 456 yards per game and 35.5 points per game, Davis will not have much margin for the slow starts this offense showed in 2025.
Garrison Davis is the projected starter and takes the first-team reps into fall camp, but the job is not settled behind him. His 86 passing yards a year ago barely register, and gone is Christian Peters, who threw for 1,924 yards and 12 touchdowns despite 9 interceptions, along with DJ Stevenson's 109 yards and Tysan Robbins. Landon Holcomb is also in the mix, and whoever wins the room inherits an offense that managed just 19.0 points and 193 passing yards per game, ranking 80th nationally through the air.
A ground game that managed just 145 rushing yards per game (66th nationally) now has to replace what little production it had on record, with Dae'Trell Cooper (116 yards) and Elijah McDonald both gone. Neither back had established himself as a real difference-maker, so the drop-off is more about lost snaps than lost yardage, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff still needs someone to turn 5.20 yards per play into more explosive gains than the 79th-ranked mark it posted in 2025. Whoever claims the carries in the SWAC opener inherits a run game with room to grow rather than a hole to dig out of.
D'Avery Robinson caught 44 passes for 457 yards, and Kareem Burke added 34 for 480, but neither found the end zone more than twice, a big reason a passing attack averaging just 193 yards a game ranked 80th nationally. The real difference-maker back is Ellis Stewart, whose 27 catches produced 6 touchdowns, more scores than Robinson and Burke combined, and turning him loose more often is the clearest path to fixing an offense stuck at 37.2% success rate. With Robinson, Burke, Stewart, Chris Hicks Jr. and Jordan Jackson all back, the pieces are already in Pine Bluff, the question is whether Alonzo Hampton's passing game can turn steady possession targets into more explosive, scoring ones.
Jaxson Isaac's modest 6 catches for 49 yards and a touchdown were still enough to pace this room in 2025, a telling sign for an offense that ranked 99th in points per game and 88th in success rate. Tyreke Jinks and his 5 catches for 37 yards are gone, but Isaac returns alongside Montrell Martin and unproven options Livingston Coaty and Kelly Smith Jr., none of whom have shown much as receiving threats yet. Until Arkansas-Pine Bluff's passing game climbs out of the bottom third nationally in yards per play, the tight ends will keep looking more like blockers than a fix for an 80th-ranked passing attack.
Alonzo Hampton watched a line last fall that could never quite open room for its own ground game, settling for 145 rushing yards a night and a 5.20 mark per play that ranked 80th nationally, numbers that trace directly to a 19.0 scoring average. Frank Bean, Dylan Booker, Bryce Lusk and Jeremiah Rodgers are all gone from those trenches, wiping out the group that at least got the offense to 338 total yards a game. With that much of the interior gone at once, the front five Hampton assembles for 2026 will decide whether Arkansas-Pine Bluff can push its third-down rate past last year's 37.8% or keeps settling for stalled drives.
The line that gave up 222 yards a game on the ground and let opponents stay on schedule at a rate that ranked 117th nationally is the reason Arkansas-Pine Bluff finished 3-8. Jaiden Crawford, Vaughn Highland, Elijah Jenkins and Kavion Majors are all gone off that group, stripping away what little was already a bad situation up front. Alonzo Hampton is not fixing this with subtraction, he needs whoever fills those four spots to actually get skinny backs on the ground before they hit the second level, because a defense yielding 7.00 yards per play cannot survive another year of it.
The rush defense bled 222 yards a game last season, a big reason the front seven ranked 118th in the country against the run, and the departures of Kaylon Bradley and Kam Robinson do not change the fundamental problem Alonzo Hampton has to fix at linebacker. This is a group defined by plays that broke down before the whistle, with only 47.8% of opponent snaps kept behind schedule, a number that points squarely at linebackers failing to fill gaps and finish tackles. Fixing that leak matters more than any name on the depth chart, because a defense already allowing 7.00 yards per play cannot climb out of the bottom tier of the SWAC without linebackers who tackle in space.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff's secondary was the soft spot in a defense that gave up 234 passing yards a game and 7.00 yards per play, ranking 120th nationally in that latter figure, numbers Alonzo Hampton has to fix immediately. Six defensive backs are out the door, including Kyle Knox, Ja'Marlin Green and Tavon Hardwick, stripping away most of the tackle production from a group that already couldn't keep opponents off schedule (117th nationally). An experienced secondary remains in the building, but until new pieces show they can tackle in space and hold up on schedule downs, this unit is the reason the scoreboard stayed lopsided in 2025.
Zach Wieder is back after averaging 40 yards on 51 punts, giving Arkansas-Pine Bluff a steady leg while the place-kicking job is genuinely up for grabs. Ty Ackerman returns having missed all three field-goal tries he saw last year, and Trey Glymph, who made 7 of 10 with a long of 39, is gone, so Ackerman has to prove last season's 0-for-3 was the exception rather than the baseline. With Nikalas Theisler and long snapper Jackson Wilson also back but unproven statistically, this remains Wieder's unit to anchor while Ackerman tries to turn a rough debut into a real answer at kicker.
Christian Peters is gone after throwing for 1924 yards, and Garrison Davis, who has thrown for just 86 yards with no touchdowns, is projected to take over an offense that still has real weapons around him. Jaylen Jennings ran for 839 yards and 10 scores, and Kareem Burke, D'Avery Robinson and Ellis Stewart all return at receiver, so the pieces are in place if Davis can distribute the ball. With no portal additions at the position, this offense rises or falls on how quickly Davis grows into the job.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff was a perfect 3-0 against the spread at home, but that number means little next to the road ledger under Alonzo Hampton, where the Lions went 1-5 against the spread and 0-6 straight up. Bettors backing this team away from Pine Bluff got burned all year, and until Hampton's group proves it can hang on the road, the home cover streak reads more like a schedule quirk than a trend to chase in 2026. The conference mark, 3-5 against the spread, tells the same story of a team that only shows up as a bet when it stays home.
