Austin Peay's path back to the UAC race runs through outscoring people, since a defense that gave up 27.3 a game (75th in scoring defense) isn't fixing itself, and Chris Parson's unit ranked 13th nationally in scoring will again have to bail it out.
Can Chris Parson replace the production Shemar Kirk took with him? Parson is the projected starter under center for Austin Peay in 2026, but the 42 catches, 685 yards and 8 touchdowns Kirk put up last season have no obvious answer on this roster. Expect Faris to lean on the run and spread the ball to whoever emerges at receiver rather than ask Parson to force throws into a target that no longer exists.
The trip to Vanderbilt is a scheduling paycheck game, not a signal of anything, but the stretch that actually decides Austin Peay's season comes right after with Tarleton State at home and a road trip to West Georgia, two true coin flips sandwiched around a defensible North Alabama road date. Get through that block anywhere near even and a slate ranked 37th nationally for difficulty starts to look manageable, with UT Martin and Gardner-Webb at home as the kind of games a 7-5 team needs to actually bank. Split the toss-ups against Tarleton and West Georgia and this projects as the same club as a year ago, hovering right around .500 in conference play rather than pulling away from it.

A 7-5 mark and a 4-4 league record undersell what Jeff Faris actually built in Clarksville, a No. 16 power rating that puts Austin Peay in the same breath as programs with far more resources. That gap between the modest record and the strong ranking is the real story entering 2026, a sign the Governors are playing tougher than their win total suggests. With the roster data for 2026 still unsettled behind incoming transfers and signees, the clearest read is that Faris has the program's floor higher than the box score shows, and the results from here are about closing that gap rather than opening it.
The record says 7-5, but the yardage margin in conference play says this team should have won closer to three of every four league games, not half, which makes Austin Peay's 2025 the setup for a jump, not a plateau. Chris Parson comes back after throwing for 2,673 yards and 21 touchdowns, giving Jeff Faris a settled answer at quarterback while an offense that already ranked 11th nationally in total yards builds around him. The defense, 75th in points allowed, is the drag on this roster, but with the passing attack this efficient and the underlying numbers this much better than the win total, the ceiling here is higher than last year's record suggests.
Chris Parson holds the job outright, inheriting an offense that scored 35.1 points and ripped off 6.73 yards per play a year ago, numbers that rank among the better marks nationally. Austin Smith's 158 yards and two touchdowns walk out the door, but that was a modest workload for a passing attack that hit 265 yards per game, so Parson steps into a system already built for efficient throwing rather than a full rebuild. Kelvin Perkins, Matthew Wilson and Karson Gordon all arrive to add depth behind him, though Wilson's brief App State stint (128 yards, 2 INT) suggests Parson's grip on the offense should hold through 2026.
Austin Peay's ground game produced 186 yards per game and a 20th-ranked rushing attack a year ago, feeding an offense that moved the ball at 6.73 yards per play. The program brings in Ni'kel Lewis from Hamburg to compete in the backfield, though he arrives with no prior statistics on file, so his impact is unproven rather than assumed. With that overall attack ranking 10th nationally in yards per play, whoever carries the load just needs to keep pace with an already explosive scheme built more around the pass than the run.
Shemar Kirk's 42 catches and 8 touchdowns walk out the door, along with Kamari Maxwell's 363 yards, gutting the room that helped Austin Peay average 35.1 points and 6.73 yards per play a season ago. Jeff Faris rebuilt through the portal rather than hope an unproven room fills that gap, landing Vanderbilt transfer Chance Fitzgerald as the marquee addition alongside App State's William Fowles and Yale's Mason Shipp, both of whom caught passes at their previous stops. None of the newcomers has produced anything close to Kirk's numbers yet, so the passing game that ranked 14th nationally in yardage will lean on Fitzgerald to become the outside threat this offense lost.
Alec Pell's modest 5 catches for 35 yards were never the point of this attack, and that stays true in 2026 with California transfer Ben Marshall stepping into the tight end spot behind a passing game that ranked 14th nationally in yards per game. Jeff Faris runs an offense that hit 6.73 yards per play (10th nationally) largely through its skill talent elsewhere, so Marshall's role looks more complementary blocker and safety-valve target than centerpiece. The bar he needs to clear is low statistically, but the offense around him, 13th in scoring, gives him a real chance to matter in the red zone even in a lesser-used role.
Jeff Faris watched his offense average 6.73 yards per play and 451 total yards a game last fall, production that now has to survive an almost entirely new front. Five of the linemen who helped build that attack, Chandler Kirton, Nick Hilliard, Joshua Sales Jr., Eli Sutton and Harrison Wilkes, are gone as part of six departures, so Faris rebuilt the room almost entirely through the portal: tackles Obadiah Obasuyi (Georgia State), Joshua Miller (Syracuse) and Kyler Gibson (Troy), plus David Gardner (Florida A&M) and interior addition Michael Cogoni (Coastal Carolina). None of the newcomers bring a statistical track record, but the number Faris cares about is 20th nationally in rushing yards per game, a run game he now hands to a line that is essentially all-transfer up front.
A line that helped hold opponents to 132 rushing yards per game and 5.27 yards per play (27th and 25th nationally) loses its full production sheet, with Charles Crews III, Davion Hood and Joquarri Price all gone. Jeff Faris rebuilt the room through the portal rather than in-house, bringing in edge David Portu from Charleston Southern, Joshua Lloyd from Western Michigan and Kendal Howard from Wake Forest alongside interior additions Ronald Jackson and Mason Fleming. Portu's 9 tackles and a sack at Charleston Southern give him the clearest early claim to snaps off the edge, and how fast that group gels up front will decide whether last year's stout run defense carries over even as the pass defense, 69th in yards allowed per game, still needs work.
Austin Peay's front seven held up against the run last season, ranking 27th in rushing yards allowed per game, but the tackle sheet at linebacker turns over almost entirely with Will Middleton, Davion Blackwell, Andrew Chamblee and Montreze Smith Jr. all gone. Jeff Faris rebuilds the position with Florida Atlantic transfer Robert Lee and Wheeling transfer Jefferson Bretanys-Desca, plus high school signee Kingston Johnson out of Olentangy Orange. The bigger question is finishing plays, since Austin Peay's defense let 43.3% of opponent snaps stay on schedule, a number these newcomers have to answer for if that run defense is going to hold.
Austin Peay held up well on the back end last season, ranking 27th in rushing yards allowed and 25th in yards per play allowed, but the group that produced those numbers is almost entirely gone, with Ellis Ellis Jr. (17 tackles), Myles Wiley (9) and Raylyn Manley (7) among nine departed defensive backs. Jeff Faris turned to the portal to answer that exodus, adding corners Justin Wimpye, who posted 7 tackles at Youngstown State, and Quan Peterson from Newberry, plus safeties William Wiebush from Wake Forest and Caleb Merritt, who had 3 tackles at Wyoming. The pass defense ranked 69th in yards allowed per game a year ago, so the new arrivals are stepping into a secondary with room to climb, not one to simply hold steady.
Carson Smith connected on 13 of 15 field goals with an 87-point season, and Austin Peay replaces that production with Hamilton DiBoyan, a South Alabama transfer who hit 6 of 9 with a 47-yard long and 38 points last year. That is a step down in efficiency on paper, but DiBoyan arrives with proven range and game reps rather than an unproven leg, giving Jeff Faris a known commodity to plug in immediately. The bigger question is the snap, with long snapper Clayton Thomas Jr. gone and no replacement yet accounted for in the data.
Chris Parson is the projected starter after throwing for 2,673 yards and 21 touchdowns, and Austin Peay's whole offensive outlook rides on him doing it again without Shemar Kirk, whose 42 catches and 8 touchdowns walk out the door. App State transfer Matthew Wilson arrived as insurance, but his 128 yards and 2 interceptions in limited action make him a backup plan, not a threat to the job. If Parson finds a new set of hands at receiver, this offense holds steady; if he cannot replace Kirk's production, the passing attack stalls out fast.
The split here is stark: Austin Peay went 6-0 straight up at home last season but just 1-5 away from Clarksville, and covered every single time it played the road underdog. That home floor and road ceiling gap is the number to watch in 2026, especially with conference trips shakier than the overall mark suggests at 3-4 against the spread. Bet the Governors when Jeff Faris has them at home or catching points on the road, and think twice when they're favored anywhere else.
