MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSWAC · Sam Shade · 4-8 last season · No. 112 in our FCS ratings
Sam Shade's group has to fix a defense that gave up 33.4 points a game before it can worry about an offense that never topped 72nd in scoring, and a power rating of 112 says neither side has fixed itself yet.
Who takes over at quarterback now that Cornelious Brown IV is gone. Alabama A&M's passing game managed just 7 touchdowns against a single interception a year ago, a low-volume, low-risk approach that whoever wins the job will likely be asked to replicate rather than expand on. Given a 2-7 league mark and a defense still finding its footing, the safer bet is a game manager who protects the ball over a gunslinger who tries to force the issue.
None of Alabama A&M's toughest tests come at home. The neutral-site trip against Alabama State (17% win) and Jackson State (22% win) bookend a road stop at Prairie View A&M (20% win), and going 1-2 or worse in that stretch is realistic given the 121st-ranked schedule. The projected 4-8 mark leans on cleaning up the easier home slate against Tennessee State (53%), Grambling (47%) and Texas Southern (47%), because those neutral-site rivalry games are where Sam Shade's group is more likely to lose than win.

A four-win season and a 2-7 mark in SWAC play stripped away any margin for error, and the power ratings put Alabama A&M at 112th nationally, a number that reflects a program still hunting for its footing under Sam Shade. The 2026 roster picture is incomplete on paper, with last year's departures leaving real snaps to replace, but the on-field product has to answer for itself now rather than lean on returning experience alone. Whatever continuity exists in the secondary and elsewhere has to translate into actual conference wins, because two league victories will not move the needle again.
The 4-8 mark hid a team that lost the margins, going 1-3 in one-score games and finishing minus-5 in turnovers, both figures more bad luck than bad football and both due to turn. The offense was the bigger issue anyway, needing 14.9 yards for every point scored against a 13.9 league median, a sign this group left points stranded rather than one that was overmatched. Sam Shade's defense has the tougher fix, allowing 6.60 yards per play (116th) and getting gashed for 194 rushing yards a game (108th), and until that front tightens up the close-game breaks Alabama A&M is due for will not translate into a jump in the SWAC standings.
Cornelious Brown IV's 1,060 yards and 7 touchdowns walk out the door, and Alabama A&M replaces its entire quarterback room with Bekkem Kritza, a Penn State transfer who arrives with no game statistics on file. That 224 yards per game through the air ranked a respectable 43rd nationally last season, so Kritza inherits an offense that could throw it but stalled everywhere else, converting just 38.2% of third downs with a 125-yard ground game. Sam Shade is betting a largely unproven arm can hold the passing numbers steady while the run game around him catches up.
Isaiah Nwokenkwo's 341 yards and lone score are off the books, leaving Alabama A&M to reboot a ground game that already ranked 95th nationally in rushing yards per game at just 125 a contest. Wake Forest transfer Drew Pickett arrives to take over the backfield, and with sacks allowed sitting at a stout 10th in the country, he should get protected up front even if the room's explosiveness (85th) needs to climb for the run game to become more than a complement to the passing attack.
Alabama A&M's passing game actually held up in 2025, ranking 43rd nationally at 224 yards a game even as the ground attack stalled at 95th, but the receivers who caught those balls are all gone, with Jaylin Peterson's modest 4-catch, 30-yard line the only production even on record. Sam Shade has to build a new group of targets around an offense that already struggled to finish drives, sitting 81st in success rate and 85th in explosiveness, so whoever wins snaps will need to create the big plays this passing attack has actually shown it can generate. The number worth watching is 224 passing yards a game, proof the ball can move through the air here if new options emerge quickly.
Travaunta Abner's 35 catches, 380 yards and 3 touchdowns walk out the door, a real chunk of the passing attack that ranked a respectable 43rd nationally in yards per game a year ago. Auburn transfer Hollis Davidson III arrives to fill that void without any prior stats on file, meaning Sam Shade is betting on pedigree over production. With the passing game the clear strength of a 72nd-ranked scoring offense, whether Davidson can replicate Abner's target share will decide if Alabama A&M's aerial identity holds up in 2026.
The line that produced just 125 rushing yards per game (95th nationally) while keeping the pass game respectable at 224 yards through the air loses three known pieces up front in Devin Pitts, Fred Samuel and TyQuez Richardson. Sam Shade brings in Jelani Wilmer-Cotton from Tallahassee Lincoln to help fill the interior, but the bigger question is whether Alabama A&M can push the run block past a 38.5% success rate and 1.24 explosiveness mark that ranked 81st and 85th nationally. If that ground game stays stuck, the passing attack will keep carrying an offense that finished 72nd in scoring.
A defense that allowed 194 rushing yards a game and 6.60 yards per play, ranked 116th, needed an infusion up front, and Sam Shade went to the portal to find it. Javeon Campbell arrives from Kentucky and Antonio Coleman from Auburn to man the edges, joined by Justyce Taylor, replacing departed linemen Nick Glenn and Xzavier Booker. None of the three transfers brings a real statistical track record yet, so the bet is on talent translating fast against a rushing defense that finished 108th nationally and has nowhere to go but up.
Alabama A&M's run defense bled 194 yards a game and 6.60 per play last season, a big reason the Bulldogs allowed 33.4 points a night, and the linebacker corps that failed to stop it is now cleared out. Jalen Wright, Dimitris Biamby and Tervae Williams are all gone from a group that never got consistent stops, and Sam Shade turns to Auburn transfer DJ Barber to bring a different level of athleticism to the second level. Barber arrives without a stat line at this level, so the real test for 2026 is whether he can be the tackler this defense lacked, not whether the room is deep enough to cover for him.
Alabama A&M's pass defense actually held up respectably in 2025, ranking 75th nationally in yards allowed per game even as the run defense and overall points allowed sagged toward triple digits nationally. That gap is the story for 2026: the secondary was the sturdier half of a shaky defense, and Sam Shade brought in Tulane transfer Jayden Lewis at corner and Mae Jemison signee Darius Burwell at safety to keep it that way while the front seven searches for answers. With five defensive backs off last year's roster, the group leans on an experienced secondary to blend with Lewis and Burwell, and if that passing-game strength holds, it becomes the closest thing this defense has to a foundation.
Victor Barbosa made all four of his field goal tries and hit from 47 last season, and his departure along with punter Robert Cole's leaves Sam Shade needing production from a specialist room without a proven name attached to it. There is no incumbent leg or established directional punter in the picture, so Alabama A&M heads into 2026 building its kicking operation essentially from scratch, which matters for a team that finished 2-7 in SWAC play and can ill afford self-inflicted field position or points left off the board.
A four-win season and a 206th-ranked signing class mean Alabama A&M has little margin for a shaky defense, which puts real weight on Tulane transfer Jayden Lewis at cornerback. He arrives with modest tackle numbers, but he is the lone marquee name imported into a unit that otherwise has to lean on unnamed, unverified holdovers. With Cornelious Brown IV's 1,060 yards and 7 touchdowns gone from the passing game, the offense figures to lean on ball control, so Lewis and the secondary limiting big plays becomes the difference between four wins again and a step forward.
The number that jumps off the card is the split: Alabama A&M covered 60% of the time on the road but just 25% at home, and as a road underdog the Bulldogs covered 67% of their spots. That is not a homefield problem, it is a market problem, bettors keep pricing Sam Shade's team as if it plays like its 2-7 conference mark suggests, and the road numbers say otherwise. The flip side is brutal against the number in league play at 22% and after a loss at 29%, so the value here is backing this group away from Huntsville, not trusting it to bounce back at home.
