Pioneer 2026 Season Preview

Tight at the Top

St. Thomas-Minnesota sits atop the projected order at No. 36 nationally, the clear favorite, but the gap behind is thin. Drake (No. 40), Presbyterian (No. 52) and San Diego (No. 53) all land within striking distance, and the projected title game pairing St. Thomas-Minnesota against Drake looks more like a coin flip than a formality. With four teams inside a projected 7-4 to 6-5 band, this race reads as wide open rather than a coronation.

Butler and Davidson Dominate

Butler's 7 picks are all defense, a near-total takeover of the front seven and back end with Dawson Hubbard, Frenchi Mack II and Okemdi Eze up front, Mason Armstrong at linebacker, and Steven Stephany, Devaon Holman and Kameron Armstrong patrolling the secondary. Davidson answers with its own defensive cluster, stacking three linebackers in Robert Lamar, Hunter Brooks and Rodney Unnasch alongside DL Liam McMann and CB Justin Caudle, making this preseason team almost entirely a Butler-Davidson defensive showcase. The offense reads like a league-wide grab bag instead, with San Diego's Dom Nankil at quarterback, Dayton placing two receivers in Gavin Lochow and Michael Mussari, and skill talent from Morehead State, Presbyterian, St. Thomas-Minnesota and Stetson filling out the rest. That split, stacked defensive powers versus scattered offensive talent, says the Pioneer's power currently runs through the trenches and back seven at Butler and Davidson.

No One Room Rules

The Pioneer's best position rooms are scattered across four different programs, with no single roster stacking multiple top spots. Marist's Sonny Mannino tops the quarterback rankings, Morehead State's Isaac Stopke leads at running back, Dayton's Gavin Lochow paces the receivers, and St. Thomas-Minnesota's Luke Schuler sits atop the tight ends. Marist edges the league with the most No. 1 rooms at just 1 of 4 position groups, underscoring how evenly the returning talent is spread rather than concentrated in one contender. That balance points to a league race decided by which of these named playmakers elevates his supporting cast the most, not by a single team holding a talent monopoly.
