Cam'Ron McCoy is projected to run an offense that returns 91% of its production yet still has to prove it can climb past 103rd in scoring, because bringing back nearly everyone from a 2-10 team that allowed 36.1 points a game mostly guarantees the same problems return too.
Does a full year of Cam'Ron McCoy running the offense actually move Southern off the bottom of the SWAC? A defense returning 100% of its production buys him time to grow into the job, and an offense that already knows its identity around him should be sharper by November than it was in a 2-8 conference season. The bigger swing factor is who catches the ball now that Darren Morris is gone, and until that answer shows up on tape, McCoy's growth is the most likely storyline of this season rather than a finished product.
The trip to Houston is a paycheck game, not a proving ground, and Southern has no real shot there. The season's actual measuring sticks come against SWAC company, at Jackson State and against Alabama State on a neutral field, two games where Southern is given only a puncher's chance but at least has a puncher's chance. The lone game the numbers actually favor is the home date with Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and for a roster projected back at 2-10 under Marshall Faulk, that one Saturday may be the difference between progress and a repeat of last year's 2-8 conference mark.

Marshall Faulk's debut on the sideline produced a 2-10 record and a 2-8 mark in league play, with the power ratings placing Southern at #122 nationally. Nothing about that on-field body of work suggests quick fixes, and 2026 becomes a chance for Faulk to show the losses were about roster building rather than scheme. The Jaguars have nowhere to go but up if the results are going to match the standard the SWAC expects.
The 2-10 record hides the actual story: Southern lost turnover margin by nine, went 2-1 in one-score games, and still posted a yardage margin in conference play that implied a much better winning percentage than the 20.0% it actually got. That gap between yardage and results is the case that Marshall Faulk's group was closer than its record showed, and turnover luck this bad rarely repeats twice. The offense still has to convert bulk yardage into points more cleanly, since it needed 16.8 yards for every point scored against a 13.9 league median, while a defense that gave up scores on just 11.4 yards per point allowed remains the bigger fix for 2026.
Cam'Ron McCoy threw for 698 yards with 5 touchdowns against 2 interceptions last fall, and he heads into 2026 as the settled starter rather than a name in a competition. That experience matters given how far the passing game has to climb, with Southern finishing 113th in passing yards per game and 82nd in offensive success rate. Dillon Compton, Ashton Strother and Jalen Woods sit behind him without prior stat lines, while Vashaun Coulon arrives out of high school at St. Augustine as a longer-term addition to the room rather than an immediate threat to McCoy's job.
Trey Holly's 830 yards and 9 touchdowns were nearly the lone bright spot in an offense that ranked 100th in total yards per game, and Marshall Faulk is building the entire 2026 attack around getting him more room to work. Mike Franklin and Princeton Cahee provide experienced depth behind him, but neither has approached Holly's production, and Greenwood three-star Champ Davis arrives with no game tape to lean on yet. The math is simple for Southern: the rushing attack was actually a relative strength at 56th nationally, and if the line can turn Holly loose more consistently, this offense stops living at 158 passing yards a game and 36.7% on third down.
Darren Morris and his 508 yards walked out the door, and Southern's passing game, already 113th in the country, has no proven returning production to fall back on among Herman Batiste, Matthew Berenji, Kobe Brown, Jordan Dupre, Khalil Harris and Jerrod Hicks. Louisiana Tech transfer Daejawn Smith arrives to add a new name to that mix, but with 158 yards a game through the air and a 36.7% third-down rate last season, Marshall Faulk needs someone in that group to actually separate from the pack rather than split targets evenly. The ceiling here is tied to the run game staying functional at 155 yards a game, because nothing in this receiving room has proven it can bail out a stalled passing attack yet.
Dupree Fuller's 13 catches for 159 yards were the only real production this room had in 2025, and he's back as the clear focal point in an offense that finished 113th in passing yards per game. David Prince returns with a single catch to his name, while Davontae Brown, Hubert Caliste, Jermaine Minor Jr. and Jeremiah Valdry all come back without a stat line to lean on, leaving Fuller to carry the receiving numbers again. Isaiah Pina arrives from South Lake as a name to watch, but until Marshall Faulk's passing attack climbs out of the bottom third nationally in yards per play, this group stays a check-down outlet more than a difference-maker.
Southern's ground game actually held up in 2025, ranking 56th nationally at 155 yards per game, but the passing attack cratered at 113th and just 5.20 yards per play overall exposed a front that couldn't create room to throw. Marshall Faulk brings in Charles Humphrey, a 3-star tackle out of Anderson County, and interior lineman Ajani Brown from Kenwood Academy to reinforce the trenches. Neither arrives with prior stats to lean on, so the bet is that Faulk's staff can develop them fast enough to turn a functional run block into a passing game that stops ranking near the bottom third of the country.
A defense that allowed 182 rushing yards a game and let opponents stay on schedule at a 76th-ranked clip did not have a front that made anyone uncomfortable in 2025. Marshall Faulk brings in Timothy Richardson from Simeon to add to that trench, though the real fix has to show up in the numbers, 6.05 yards allowed per play is the kind of numbing figure that erases individual flashes. Southern's points allowed per game, 36.1, ranked 110th nationally, and that starts up front, not in the secondary.
A defense that allowed 36.1 points and 413 yards a game while managing a single sack all season is the backdrop for a linebacker corps built almost entirely on projection. Markeis Batiste, Ricky Brutus, Jamarlo Campbell, Jeremiah Coleman, Christian Doyle and Michael Jones Jr. all return without a single logged stat, so Marshall Faulk is betting on unproven experience rather than replacing proven production. Nebraska transfer Roger Gradney arrives with just one career tackle, but landing an FBS transfer at all signals Southern trying to inject speed into a front that finished 79th in tackles for loss and let 43.2% of opponent snaps stay on schedule.
A defense that allowed 36.1 points and 232 passing yards per game did not lose much to the portal, which is the actual problem: Horacio Johnson, Zay Franks and safeties Tyrik Brigalia and Herman Brister III are all back from a group that finished 77th in passing yards allowed and 88th in yards per play, and continuity alone will not fix that. Marshall Faulk went outside the program to change the picture at corner, adding Kiwaun Davis from Eastern Illinois along with Tommie Anderson and Devin Duplessis, while Rayhienz Henry joins the safety mix. The bet here is that new bodies at corner, not scheme continuity, are what move Southern off the bottom third of the country in yards allowed.
Nathan Zimmer returns to handle placekicking, with Kenny Pham back punting and Conner Perritt again the long snapper, giving Southern a full specialist unit intact after a 2-10 season with no track record attached to any of the three names. That absence of production data cuts both ways for Marshall Faulk, but continuity in all three jobs at least removes special teams as a variable while the roster is rebuilt elsewhere. The bigger question is whether that stability translates into cleaner field position and fewer self-inflicted wounds in a league where Southern went 2-8.
Southern's season swings on Trey Holly, who ran for 830 yards and 9 touchdowns behind a 2-10 team that had almost nothing else working. With Darren Morris and his 508 receiving yards gone and Cam'Ron McCoy still developing as the projected starter, Holly and fellow returnee Mike Franklin have to carry an offense that cannot yet lean on the passing game. If Holly repeats his workload, Southern stays competitive in SWAC play; if he gets bottled up, McCoy is left trying to win games through the air alone.
Southern did not just lose games in 2025, it lost bettors money almost every single week, covering just once in twelve tries and going 0-for-3 as a road underdog. The 1-9 mark against the spread following a loss shows a program that could not right itself once things went sideways, and with Marshall Faulk's group finishing 1-9 ATS in conference play, backing this team in 2026 requires betting on a real structural fix, not a bounce. Until Southern proves it can win a close one, the market has every reason to keep punishing it the same way it did last fall.
