A power rating of 27 nationally is a wild number for a program coming off a 4-8 finish with a defense that gave up 31.5 points a game, and Tim Skipper's team will only prove that ranking right if the defense climbs out of the bottom third of the country in scoring.
Can whoever wins the quarterback job actually cut down the interceptions that plagued this offense last fall? Ty Dieffenbach threw nine touchdowns against nine picks in 2025, and that turnover rate is precisely the kind of number that turns a competitive Big Sky record into a losing one. With a rebuilt receiving corps and an experienced secondary on the other side of the ball, the more likely path is a slower, more conservative passing attack that trades some explosiveness for fewer giveaways.
Cal Poly's schedule ranks 19th toughest in the country, but the season turns on three trips: at Montana State (16%), at San José State (22%) and at UC Davis (32%). Lose all three and Tim Skipper's club is fighting from behind in the Big Sky race, but a home slate loaded with favorable spots, including Utah Tech (75%), Weber State (66%) and San Diego (67%), gives Cal Poly a path to the projected 6-6 mark even if none of those road trials break their way. Split just one of those three toss-up road games and this team is squarely in the mix for more.

Cal Poly finished 4-8 and 2-6 in the Big Sky, but the No. 27 power ranking says this roster is far better than a losing conference mark suggests, and that gap between results and talent is the real story entering 2026 under Tim Skipper. Cal Poly is not rebuilding from scratch here, it is correcting a season where the record lagged the roster, and the raw ability on hand should translate into a conference mark that looks nothing like 2-6. The number to watch is not last year's win total but whether this group finally plays to the level its rating already says it belongs.
Cal Poly's offense was a study in contrasts last fall: a passing attack that ranked 20th nationally in yards per game paired with a success rate that sat 94th, meaning explosive strikes covered for a unit that too often stalled on money downs. The league-only yardage math backs up that these Mustangs were better than 4-8 looked, an in-conference win rate well below what their yardage margin against those foes implied, and a minus-8 turnover margin that reads more like bad luck than a broken team. The floor for 2026 is a defense that allowed 426 yards a game (107th nationally), and until that side tightens up, the boom-or-bust passing game will keep deciding close ones instead of putting them away.
Ty Dieffenbach's 1,305 yards and explosive-play efficiency (that 1.41 explosiveness mark ranked 8th nationally) walk out the door, leaving Cal Poly to replace its passing punch with unproven arms. Hawai'i transfer Dermaricus Davis, a four-star arrival with only 10 career passing yards on his ledger, and three-star signee Berell Staples now compete to run an offense that actually moved the ball through the air (253 yards per game, 20th nationally) but stalled constantly on third down (34.9%, 87th) and couldn't sustain drives (36.7% success rate, 94th). Whoever wins that job inherits an offense built for chunk plays but not for grinding out first downs, which means Tim Skipper needs Davis to show the Hawai'i tape was real rather than a footnote.
Jaden Green arrives from Lehigh with 854 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, a workload upgrade for a Cal Poly ground game that managed just 129 yards per game a year ago, 90th nationally. None of the backs who combined for that modest total, Zion Hall, Jaedon Matthews, or Paul Holyfield Jr., are back, so Green is stepping straight into lead-back touches. With 253 passing yards per game already established through the air, Tim Skipper's offense does not need Green to carry it, just to make the third-down and short-yardage snaps less of a liability than the 34.9% conversion rate suggests they were.
Michael Briscoe's 43 catches for 779 yards and 7 touchdowns and Logan Booher's 35-catch, 427-yard season walk out the door together, gutting the production behind a passing game that ranked 20th nationally in yards per game a year ago. Tim Skipper rebuilds the room with Western Michigan transfer Ray Hall alongside high school signees Oreste Yong and Caleb Clark, both three-star recruits out of Roseville and Arroyo Grande, plus Savaughn Gentle and Tyler Caldwell. The passing infrastructure is proven at 253 yards per game and elite in explosiveness at 1.41 per successful play, but the new names have to convert that efficient system into production fast, especially with the offense already stuck at a 36.7% success rate and a 34.9% third-down clip that left little room for error last season.
Cal Poly's passing game hummed last season, 253 yards a game through the air and 20th nationally, but none of it came from established tight end production, with the departed trio of Michael Otterstedt, Nic Sani and Sam Hedrick combining for all of four catches. Gavin Nelson arrives from Sacramento State with 5 catches for 70 yards, modest but more receiving work than anyone he is replacing put up, and Washington State transfer Luke Leighton adds a blue-chip pedigree with no stat line yet to judge. With Tim Skipper's offense already explosive on a per-play basis (8th in explosiveness), Nelson and Leighton have a real chance to turn tight end into a weapon rather than an afterthought in the passing attack.
Tim Skipper's offense leaned hard on the pass last season, ranking 20th in passing yards per game but only 90th on the ground, and that imbalance traces straight back to a line that lost five-plus bodies this offseason, including Tyler Charbonneau, Leif Magnuson, Anthony Patt, Trevor Newkirk and Racin Delgatty. Cal Poly answered by bringing in a full rebuild up front, Davit Boyajyan from Washington, Blake Graham from Leuzinger, Garrett Bertsch from Los Gatos, Malachi Johnston from Santa Barbara and Owen Neill from Mater Dei, none with prior college stats but all tasked with fixing a run game that ranked 94th in offensive success rate. If that group can hold up on early downs, the explosiveness already in this offense (8th nationally in value per successful play) has a real shot to translate into more than 34.9% third-down conversions.
Cal Poly's line gave up 178 rushing yards and 5.95 yards per play a season ago, numbers that put the front seven's push near the bottom third of the country, and none of last year's rotation pieces (Victory Johnson, Thomas Bouda, Antonio Vakameilalo among them) are back. Tim Skipper turned to the transfer market to reset the room, bringing in Nicholas Fernandez from UTRGV up front and edge rushers Julian Njelita, Ryder Barnes and Dabe Nwude from the high school ranks. With almost the entire two-deep gone and no established pass rush production to point to, 2026 is about whether that new group can turn a defense that stayed on schedule against opponents just 45.6% of the time into one that gets off the field on third down.
Opposing offenses stayed on schedule against Cal Poly's front seven at a rate that ranked 101st nationally last fall, and the yards piled up on the ground at 178 per game. Mikey D'Amato and Ethan Calvert are both gone from that group, taking their production with them, and the answer Tim Skipper found in the portal is Chase Martin, a former Boise State three-star arriving with no game tape on file at Cal Poly. That's a bet on upside over proven output, and until Martin or someone else forces stops behind the line, expect the rushing numbers to look similar in 2026.
A secondary that allowed 247 passing yards per game a season ago, 104th nationally, loses its top three safeties in production, Jeremiah Bernard, Brian Dukes Jr. and Mason Rivera, along with both departed cornerbacks. Tim Skipper turns to transfers RL Miller, a 3-star addition from Fresno State, and Jared Douglas from Middle Tennessee to reset the safety spots behind an experienced group of corners. The bigger issue is scheme execution as much as personnel, with opponents keeping drives on schedule 45.6% of the time (101st), so Miller and Douglas need to tackle in space immediately rather than ease into the league.
Jesse Ehrlich's departure leaves a real hole after he averaged 43.1 yards on 65 punts, a number Cal Poly's next punter has to approach on a team that went 4-8. Tim Skipper brought in Noah Thayer from JSerra Catholic to handle placekicking duties, while Payton Hoff arrives from Grambling to snap for a specialist corps that otherwise leans on an experienced group already in the program. The punting job is the swing spot to watch, since nobody currently in the picture has produced anything close to Ehrlich's numbers.
Cal Poly is handing the offense to Dermaricus Davis, a four-star arrival from Hawai'i who carries almost no game tape and must immediately replace Ty Dieffenbach's 1305 yards and 9 touchdowns. The bet gets easier if Jaden Green, who ran for 854 yards and 8 scores at Lehigh, controls the ground game and lets Davis grow into the job rather than rescue it. With a 139th-ranked class behind them, the Mustangs have almost no margin if either transfer misfires.
A 2-6 conference mark under Tim Skipper masked a program that actually cashed tickets against the spread within the league, going 4-3 there and 5-5 overall. The market found this team more reliably at home than away, a 2-1 cover rate at home against 3-4 on the road, and Vegas clearly overreacted to losses, with a 4-3 cover mark the week after defeats. Against ranked competition the number was even more generous, a 2-1 cover mark despite a 1-3 straight-up mark, suggesting the line consistently overshot how bad this team actually was on the field.
