Just 22% of production returns for a team that already ranked 123rd nationally, so Casey Bullock is effectively rebuilding an offense that scored 18.2 points a game behind a defense giving up 39.6, a combination that points to another long year under Saj Thakkar.
Can Casey Bullock hold up as a full-season starter with almost nothing around him and almost no offense returning from a season ago? With only 21.7% of the offensive production back, Bullock is not inheriting a system so much as building one from scratch under Saj Thakkar, and that gap is too wide for a first-time starter to close in one year. Expect growing pains to define the offense well into conference play.
Davidson's projected 3-9 says less about the roster than about a schedule ranked 114th in difficulty, one that offers only two games where Saj Thakkar's team is favored, Stetson at home and a coin-flip against VMI. The real season plays out on the road, where trips to St. Thomas-Minnesota, Presbyterian and San Diego carry the lowest win odds on the board and will decide whether this program shows any progress from last year's 1-7 conference finish. Stack those three brutal road tests against manageable dates with Morehead State and Marist, and the path to more than three or four wins runs through catching one of those road underdog spots.

Davidson's 2025 was defined by lopsided outcomes, a 2-10 finish that included a 1-7 mark in league play under Saj Thakkar. The power rating of 123 lines up with what the record already shows, a team that struggled to compete week to week rather than one undone by close losses. There is no hidden overachievement here to spin positively, 2026 is simply about building from a season that offered little to point to on the field.
The story here is not the anemic offense, it is a defense that allowed 39.6 points and 478 yards a game, ranking 121st nationally in yards allowed and 122nd in keeping opponents off schedule. Casey Bullock, who threw for just 223 yards with 0 touchdowns and an interception in limited action, projects as the 2026 quarterback, and even a modest step forward from him will not matter if a unit surrendering 236 rushing yards per game does not get fixed first. Davidson was 2-10 with a defense that could not get anyone off the field, and until that changes, the offensive numbers are background noise.
Casey Bullock, who completed passes for 223 yards and an interception in relief snaps a year ago, takes the first-team reps into camp as the front-runner, but the job is not settled behind him. That competition matters because Coulter Cleland's 2,117 yards and 20 touchdowns are gone, and nobody in the returning group, not Andrew Frazier, not Austen Frattura, has thrown or run enough to have banked real production. Davidson's passing game actually ranked a respectable 77th nationally in yards per game last season, so whoever wins the camp battle inherits a scheme that can throw the ball, even if the 32.7% third-down rate and 106th-ranked scoring offense say the margin for error is thin.
Will Jones managed just 127 yards a year ago, and he still projects as the closest thing to a proven back in this room, with Mason Sheron's 503 yards and Brodey Berg's 82 yards representing the bulk of what has to be replaced. Berg returns alongside Jones, but neither has shown he can be the every-down answer for an offense that ran for only 117 yards a game, 103rd nationally. Aaron Carey and Caiden Collins carry no statistical track record, so Davidson's ground game in 2026 is less about replacing Sheron's production than proving Jones can turn a bigger workload into more than incremental gains.
Ivan Hoyt's 60 catches, 842 yards and 10 touchdowns walk out the door, and nothing left in this room replaces that kind of production on its own. AJ Adams caught 17 balls for 226 yards without a touchdown, and Alani Ajigbotosho managed just 129 yards on 7 catches with one score, so the returning group is built on volume, not explosive playmaking, even though Davidson's passing offense actually ranked a respectable 77th nationally in yards per game. Tahir Henry and Tristan Hollins arrive with no prior stats to lean on, which means Adams and Ajigbotosho have to turn modest 2025 roles into the featured targets for an offense that finished 106th in scoring.
Langston Green's 9 catches and 3 touchdowns walk out the door, leaving Jack Perozek, who caught just 2 passes for 15 yards, as the most proven name left at tight end. Caden Glenn, Drew Taylor and Xavier Vela all return without a catch on record, so the production Green provided has to come from somewhere new in that group rather than from a like-for-like replacement. That matters for a Davidson offense that already ranked 106th in scoring and 85th in success rate, since a passing game stuck at 77th in yards per game needs its tight ends to create some of the explosive plays Green used to supply.
Davidson's line pushed a run game that managed just 117 yards per game (103rd nationally) and a 4.92 yards-per-play average that ranked 98th, numbers that made every third down a struggle at a 32.7% clip. Three linemen are out the door in Danny Fish, Kyler Herring and Tom Luther, so David Brooks, Carson Coffman, Russell Hutchens, Alex Jones, Parker Nichols and Liam Porter form the pool Saj Thakkar has to sort into a group that can actually move people. Given how far this front sat from opening lanes last fall, the safer bet is another grind-it-out season up front before the numbers move.
Davidson gave up 7.05 yards per play last season, a line that ranked 121st nationally and let opponents stay on schedule on 51.6% of snaps, so the trench problem was structural, not incidental. Danzel Chukwuemeka, Brady Clark, Jarmal Gilmore, Christian Hayes, Cam Jackson and Robert Jones all return to attack that fix, though none arrives with a statistical track record to lean on. Saj Thakkar needs that group to simply win more one-on-ones up front, because the 236 rushing yards allowed per game Davidson surrendered will not shrink on scheme alone.
Opponents stayed on schedule against this defense 51.6% of the time, 122nd nationally, and the 7.05 yards per play allowed exposed a linebacker corps that never got off blocks. Ryan Bassani, Ayden Bell, Hunter Brooks, Jayden Ferguson, Jalen Gist and Tre Johnson are all back, but none carry a single tackle on record, meaning the group that surrendered 236 rushing yards per game a year ago has to prove it can actually show up in the box score before anyone trusts the run defense to climb out of 120th. Saj Thakkar is banking on reps and continuity from that returning six to turn last year's 236 yards a game problem into a full season of tackles instead of just names on a chart.
Davidson's secondary gave up 242 yards a game through the air and let opponents stay on schedule 51.6% of the time, a big reason a defense allowing 39.6 points a game ranked 119th in that category. Jacary Lightsey returns at corner after a modest 2-catch, 44-yard sample size, and he's flanked by a safety group of Hudson Altenburg, Brice Baker, Hayden Bender and Lamar Bolden Jr., none of whom carry a statistical track record on file, alongside corner Jalen Anderson. With so little proven production back there, 2026 hinges less on scheme than on whether that untested safety trio can tackle better than the group that allowed 236 rushing yards a game and turn Lightsey's experience into a real anchor.
Davidson's kicking situation is oddly crowded with returning leg talent rather than thin. Breyson Palmer actually handled punting duties a year ago, booming 35 punts at a 38.5-yard clip, while Christos Tzoumakas manned placekicking and hit 3 of 5 field goals with a long of 38. Chace Benoist also returns with punting experience of his own (22 punts, 33.6 average), so Saj Thakkar has real competition and proven production to sort through at both spots rather than a void to fill.
Coulter Cleland's 2117 yards and 20 touchdowns walk out the door, and Casey Bullock, who threw for just 223 yards with no scores last season, is projected to take over an offense that finished 1-7 in conference play. Everything Davidson wants to do through the air in 2026 runs through whether Bullock can grow into that workload, since neither Will Jones nor Brodey Berg has shown enough on the ground yet to make the passing game optional.
Davidson went winless away from home in 2025 and bettors got burned right alongside the team, covering just once in six road tries and going 1-4 as a road underdog. Home was another story, where Saj Thakkar's group actually covered 40% of the time and split its straight-up games at 2-4, a split gap real enough that anyone laying points on Davidson in 2026 should wait for a home date. The conference numbers tell the same tale in miniature, a 3-5 cover mark that still beat a 1-7 straight-up league record, meaning the number was usually kinder to Davidson than the scoreboard.
