Devin Farrell runs an offense that finished 10th in the country by season's end, yet our model slots Rhode Island 25th entering 2026, a spread that says the coaches' poll trusted last year's 8-0 conference run more than this year's projection trusts what's left of it.
Who takes over the 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns Antwain Littleton Jr. carried out the door? Devin Farrell heads into 2026 as the established starting quarterback for a team that went 8-0 in conference, and that stability at the most important spot means the ground game gets rebuilt around him rather than the offense being rebuilt from scratch. Expect Rhode Island to lean on Farrell's continuity to smooth over the backfield loss rather than replicate Littleton's exact workload with one back.
An 11-3 team that ran the conference table at 8-0 does not face a soft slate rebuilding that reputation, and the trip to Temple is the outlier here, a road game at long odds that sits alone on this schedule. The stretch at Yale and at New Hampshire is where the CAA grind actually bites, two true toss-up type tests sandwiched around the expected wins over UAlbany, North Carolina A&T and Bryant. Jim Fleming has the pieces to bank those should-win spots, but the season's real measuring stick is whether Rhode Island can steal one of those low-odds road games instead of just surviving the rest.
Every team in the FCS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
A perfect 8-0 run through CAA play and an 11-3 finish put Rhode Island in the No. 25 power rating range, the kind of season that resets expectations rather than validates a rebuild under Jim Fleming. The 2026 roster picture is unsettled with transfers and signees still to be sorted, but the bar Fleming just set, a conference title-caliber team, is now the standard this program measures itself against. Anything short of contending for that league crown again reads as a step back, not a continuation.
Devin Farrell's 3,746 yards and 24 touchdowns powered an offense that needed just 13.8 yards per point, a finishing efficiency that rarely holds up two years running. That's the real story behind the 11-3, 8-0 conference mark: Rhode Island's win rate in league play ran well ahead of what its yardage margin in those games actually supports, and a minus-5 turnover margin got buried underneath it all. Farrell gives Jim Fleming's offense a real anchor, but the defense making opponents work for it (15.8 yards allowed per point) and the turnovers are the pieces more likely to swing back toward the middle in 2026.
Devin Farrell is the established starter behind an offense that pushed 289 passing yards per game, fifth nationally, and produced 6.72 yards per play a year ago. That air attack should not miss a beat with Farrell entrenched, even as Ryan Jankowski's departure closes the book on last year's competition at the position. Georgia Southern transfer Tyler Budge arrives to fill out the room, giving Jim Fleming a proven system and a backup with FBS snaps rather than an unknown quantity behind Farrell.
Antwain Littleton Jr. and Brendon Barrow combined to shoulder Rhode Island's ground game last fall, and both are gone, taking 1248 and 422 rushing yards with them. That production has to come from somewhere new, and the only name on the ledger is Brayden Richardson, a three-star arrival out of Sleepy Hollow with no college stats yet to his name. Jim Fleming's offense leaned on the pass anyway, ranking 5th nationally in passing yards per game against just 72nd in rushing, so Richardson does not need to be a workhorse, just enough of a complement to keep the play-action game honest.
Greg Gaines III's 65 catches, 1018 yards and 4 touchdowns walk out the door along with Omari Walker's production, gutting the room that helped power a passing attack ranked 5th nationally in yards per game at 289. That 2025 unit thrived on explosive, efficient throws (45.3% success rate, 20th nationally), and Jim Fleming's staff now has to find that same juice from an experienced group of pass catchers already on campus rather than replace it wholesale. The passing infrastructure and scheme stay intact even as the headline names change, which matters more for Rhode Island's ceiling than any single departure.
Connor Finer's departure strips Rhode Island's passing attack, which ranked 5th nationally in yards per game, of its most productive tight end, and the 4 touchdowns he scored alongside Kevin Schaeffer and Matt Smith all walk out the door too. Stanford transfer CJ Hawkins arrives without a stat line to lean on, so Jim Fleming is betting on projection over production at a spot that quietly fueled a top-20 offense in yards per play. How fast Hawkins reads this scheme will decide whether that passing efficiency holds or takes a step back.
Rhode Island's line protected a passing attack that ranked 5th nationally in yards per game and kept quarterbacks upright well enough to finish 83rd in sacks allowed, a solid if unspectacular baseline for a unit that just got almost entirely rebuilt through the portal. Felix Doege (App State), Jadon Lafontant (Boston College) and Joshua Schuetzmann (Old Dominion) arrive as ready-made starting candidates up front, while Teddy Welch adds another interior body from the prep ranks. The rushing attack, already just 72nd in yards per game, is the bigger worry given the group's total lack of on-field track record, and how quickly these transfers gel will decide whether Rhode Island's explosive passing game can carry over into 2026.
Rhode Island's front held up its end of an 11-3 run, chipping in to a defense that allowed just 4.91 yards per play (13th nationally) and finished 18th in scoring defense, even with rush defense the relative soft spot at 49th. Jim Fleming looked to the portal to add juice off the edge, bringing in Toddrick Brewton, who posted 4 tackles and half a sack for Florida International last season, and pairing him with St. Thomas More product John Rabet. Neither arrives with a loud track record, so the tape from that 4.91-yards-per-play unit last fall, not the transfer résumés, is still the best evidence this line can hold up in the CAA.
Rhode Island's defense turned in one of the CAA-bound program's most efficient showings anywhere, allowing just 4.91 yards per play (13th nationally), and none of that unit's departed linebackers were the engine behind it. A.J. Pena, Sam Ofurie and John Boyles combined for modest tackle totals and are gone, but their light box-score marks mean Jim Fleming isn't replacing a star so much as reshuffling roles behind an experienced front that already held opponents to 143 rushing yards a game. The bigger swing factor is how the back seven communicates in coverage, where Rhode Island's 191 passing yards allowed per game (23rd nationally) sets a real bar for whoever steps into those linebacker spots in 2026.
Rhode Island's secondary held opponents to 191 passing yards a game and a 4.91 yards-per-play mark that ranked 13th nationally, and Jim Fleming loses that group's collective production, six defensive backs including Justin Carcel and Leisaan Hibbert. There is no transfer name to plug the gap here, only true freshmen in cornerback Aldarius Johnson Jr. and safety Tristan Washington, both walking into an experienced secondary rather than an empty one. The scheme that limited the pass a year ago is intact, but keeping opponents off schedule (34th nationally) with largely new faces at corner and safety is the swing factor for whether this defense still travels with the offense's 8-0 league mark.
Garth White's departure leaves a real hole after he hit 14 of 15 field goals with a 54-yarder and 96 points last season, production that quietly powered an 11-3, 8-0 conference run. James Allen's 41.3-yard average on 51 punts also walks out the door, so Jim Fleming is replacing both specialists on a unit that had zero shakiness in 2025. Whoever wins the placekicking and punting jobs inherits a program that just went unbeaten in league play, which raises the stakes on getting both spots right.
Rhode Island ran through the CAA at 8-0 last fall, but that came with Antwain Littleton Jr. pounding out 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground, and he is gone. That shifts the whole operation onto Devin Farrell, who already threw for 3,746 yards and 24 touchdowns, and without a ground game to lean on, his efficiency and ability to avoid the 8 interceptions from a year ago will decide whether Rhode Island's offense stays a CAA-title outfit or just a good one.
Rhode Island went a perfect 8-0 in CAA play and bettors who backed them covered at a 75% clip, a gap that dwarfs the 54% overall number. That split says the market never fully priced how much Jim Fleming's group separated from the rest of the conference even as it stayed nervy in non-league games. Road favorites elsewhere should note the road mark sits at 57%, while the sample against ranked teams is empty, so 2026 tells the real story once this group faces up.
