Tremaine Jackson can rebuild the offense around Dez Thomas II because the group that allowed 17.9 points per game, 6th in scoring defense, is the one thing on this roster that does not need fixing.
Can a program coming off a 10-4 season actually field enough of its old self to repeat it? With offensive returning production at just 32.7% and the defense returning even less at 30.6%, Tremaine Jackson is rebuilding nearly two full units at once rather than tweaking a winner. That much combined turnover on both sides points to a step back in consistency even if the talent replacing it is capable, simply because there is so little experience left to steady either group.
The trip to Baylor is a paycheck game, a 1% shot that exists to fund the program, and nothing about it should color how this team is judged. The real evaluation comes at Tarleton State, where a 14% projection says Prairie View is expected to lose, and at home against Stephen F. Austin, a coin-flip-tilted 28% game that looks like the true measuring stick inside the projected 7-5 mark. Everything else on the slate, from Southern at 88% to Alabama A&M at 80%, is business Tremaine Jackson's group should handle if last year's 7-1 SWAC form carries over.

Tremaine Jackson pushed Prairie View A&M to a 10-4 mark and a 7-1 SWAC ledger, the kind of conference dominance that reshapes expectations heading into 2026. A power rating of 55 says the Panthers are a solid, unspectacular outfit nationally, but that gap between modest national standing and near-unbeaten league play is the actual story. This is a program built to win the SWAC first and worry about the rest of the résumé later.
The 23-21 SWAC title win papered over an offense that finished drives efficiently but a defense that let opponents earn theirs, and a turnover margin that flattered a group needing just 6.71 yards per play. Dez Thomas II, projected to start after his 1,405-yard, 8-TD season at Georgetown, takes over an attack that ranked 12th nationally in explosiveness but converted only 41.3% of third downs, meaning the passing efficiency has to travel with him rather than the raw arm talent. The defense that allowed just 273 yards per game bent without breaking against SWAC competition, and that is the half of this résumé least likely to show up twice.
Cameron Peters' 2,779 yards and 21 touchdowns walk out the door, and the answer arrives via the portal in Dez Thomas II, who takes the first-team reps as the front-runner out of Georgetown after throwing for 1,405 yards with 8 touchdowns against 9 interceptions. The turnover rate is the real question mark behind an offense that ranked 12th nationally in yards per play and 10th in sacks allowed, a line that should give whoever wins the job time to work. Tevin Carter's 614 yards on 3 touchdowns and 2 picks give Tremaine Jackson a returning option to lean on if Thomas' camp battle stays unsettled, but this is Thomas' job to lose.
Chase Bingmon put up 840 yards and 8 touchdowns behind an offense that ranked 12th nationally in yards per play, and he heads a backfield that stays remarkably intact for 2026 even with Lamagea McDowell's 447 yards and 8 scores gone. Shadrick Byrd adds a proven complement with 242 yards of his own, so Tremaine Jackson is not starting over so much as building out from a workhorse who already carried the load. High school arrivals Nicholas Tramble and Amarie Jackson give the room fresh legs, but this offense's rushing identity in 2026 still runs through Bingmon.
Rodny Ojo is the only proven volume threat left in this room, and his 29 catches for 362 yards now have to carry more weight after Andre Dennis (34 catches, 565 yards, 4 TD) and Cameron Bonner (18 catches, 325 yards, 3 TD) both moved on. That production gap is real, but Prairie View's offense was built on efficiency, not one target hog, ranking 12th nationally in yards per play and 17th in total yards per game a year ago. Chaney Fitzgeraled flashed with 94 yards on just two catches, and if that big-play rate scales up with more snaps, Tremaine Jackson's attack can replace Dennis's numbers without replacing him one for one.
Kheagian Heckaman turned just 4 catches into 2 touchdowns last season, and that kind of red-zone efficiency has to carry more weight now that Travon Jones, the room's leading receiver at 27 catches for 236 yards and 3 scores, is gone. Ethan John is the volume option coming back, with 12 grabs for 230 yards, but neither he nor Heckaman has proven they can absorb Jones's snaps on a per-target basis. Tremaine Jackson's offense still ranked 12th nationally in yards per play, so the tight ends do not need to be the focal point, just efficient enough to keep that passing game (23rd in yards per game) humming.
Tremaine Jackson's offense put up 6.71 yards per play (12th nationally) and 185 rushing yards a game behind a line that has to be almost entirely reconstructed this offseason, with CK Carter, Jadrien Collard, Caleb Leonard, Jeremiah Mawali and Calvin McMillian among six departures up front. That production, not the turnover, is the standard the new group inherits, and an experienced backfield and receiving corps give whoever fills these gaps a real chance to keep the ground game humming. The third-down rate (41.3%, 39th) is the softer number to watch, since a shakier interior could turn those long-yardage snaps into the offense's real bottleneck in 2026.
A defense that allowed just 273 yards a game, best in the country, has to replace the entire production of its line, since all six of last season's rotation pieces including Malik Gucake are gone. Tremaine Jackson turns to a pair of new edges to reset the pass rush, Michael Riles arriving from Oklahoma State and Jarrad Loper coming in from Pascagoula, though neither brings a prior stat line to lean on. The bigger concern is the run defense they inherit, which finished only 34th in rushing yards allowed per game even as the pass defense dominated, and that gap is where 2026 will actually be decided up front.
Prairie View's front seven made its living on disruption last fall, ranking 2nd nationally in tackles for loss and holding foes to a 1st-ranked 139 passing yards a game, but the two linebackers most responsible for that havoc, Sterling Roberts and Darrell Starling, are both gone. Jayven Jackson and Matthew Moore, who combined for modest tackle numbers but chipped in on sacks and TFLs, are the returning pieces Tremaine Jackson leans on to keep that disruptive identity intact, while UTSA transfer Mark Rayson III adds another body who has actually logged a tackle at this level. The bigger swing factor is whether unproven names like Jaden Allison and Nigel Hill can turn opportunity into production, because the raw stat production this room returns barely resembles what it is replacing.
A secondary that finished 1st nationally in both yards allowed per game and passing yards allowed per game now leans on Eric Zachery, whose 12 tackles top the returning group, to anchor a rebuilt back end. Kamren Amao and Travor Randle, who combined for real production a year ago, are gone, leaving Jaylon Shelton, Joseph Alcala and Skylon Jean-Louis to carry over experience while Kansas transfer Damani Maxson steps into the safety mix. Tremaine Jackson isn't replacing last year's numbers so much as trusting a deeper cast to sustain a pass defense that was historically stingy in 2025.
Diego Alfaro was money last season, hitting 5 of 6 field goals with a 44-yard long and 43 points, and he heads into 2026 as the clear answer at kicker over Aiden Webb, who connected on just 6 of 11 tries. The bigger question mark is at punter, where Adam Atwell and his 39.4-yard average are gone with no returning statistics on file to replace that leg. Long snappers Keaton Crowley and Drew Skartvedt are both back, giving Tremaine Jackson at least one settled piece up front while he sorts out who punts.
Cameron Peters is gone after throwing for 2779 yards and 21 touchdowns, and Prairie View hands the offense to Georgetown transfer Dez Thomas II, projected to start after completing just 1405 yards with 8 TD and 9 INT in his prior stint. That interception rate is the swing factor for a 10-4 team trying to hold serve in the SWAC, and Chase Bingmon's 840 rushing yards and 8 scores give Thomas a run game to lean on while he settles in.
Prairie View A&M did not just win the league at 7-1, it crushed spreads while doing it, covering 88% of its conference games and going a perfect 2-0 as a road underdog last season. Tremaine Jackson's group covered in six of its seven road games as an away favorite or dog, the kind of profile that follows a team into the next year's number. Books will adjust for 2026, but a program that covered nearly three-quarters of its games overall is going to keep getting bet until it stops.
