SC State's Race to Lose

South Carolina State sits alone at the top nationally at No. 41, a full tier above everyone else in this league, and projects as the clear favorite at 7-5. North Carolina Central and Delaware State crowd right behind at No. 67 and No. 71, close enough that either could crash the top spot, and our projections send North Carolina Central through to face South Carolina State in the title game. Morgan State, Howard and Norfolk State occupy a lower tier at No. 100, No. 106 and No. 116, out of true contention barring an upset run. This is a two-team race at the top with a genuine gap separating South Carolina State and North Carolina Central from the rest of the field.

SC State's Defensive Stamp

South Carolina State's 7 selections come almost entirely on defense, with Mike Lunz and Shon Brown anchoring the line, Jayden Fuller at linebacker, and a secondary trio of Brenyen Scott, Shamari Reed and Charles Arnold all making first team, a group built to be the league's stop unit. North Carolina Central answers on offense, sweeping the backfield and receiver spots with quarterback Walker Harris, running back Chris Mosley, and receivers Chauncey Spikes and Mehki Wall, then adding linebackers Max U'Ren and Isaiah Lawson to stay relevant on defense too. Morgan State spreads its influence across both lines of scrimmage with running back Randall Nauden, tight end Joshua Smith, linebacker Dylan Davis and defensive back Josiah Blake, while Norfolk State and Howard each land a single interior lineman in Dawson Rivers and Israel Lucas. The split points to a two-team race between South Carolina State's defense and North Carolina Central's offense for conference supremacy, with everyone else picking off scraps.

Two Programs, Split Power

North Carolina Central controls the offensive skill positions, owning the top returning room at quarterback with Walker Harris, running back with Chris Mosley and receiver with Chauncey Spikes, which is 3 of the 7 total position groups in the conference. South Carolina State answers by cornering the entire defensive side, topping the position rankings at defensive line with Mike Lunz, linebacker with Jayden Fuller and defensive backs with Brenyen Scott. Morgan State's lone claim comes at tight end, where Joshua Smith paces the league. The split points to a conference where the ceiling belongs to whichever of those two programs can pair its own strength with enough on the other side of the ball.
