Alabama State's Race to Lose

Alabama State sits alone as the favorite at No. 28 nationally, a tier removed from everyone else in the league. Jackson State (No. 45) and Prairie View A&M (No. 55) are close enough to each other to be treated as a real pair behind the leader, while Bethune-Cookman (No. 89) trails well back of that group. Our projected title game has Alabama State facing Prairie View A&M, but the gap between those two sides is wide enough that this reads as Alabama State's race to lose rather than a true toss-up.

Prairie View Sets the Pace

Prairie View A&M paces the SWAC preseason all-conference team with 4 selections, headlined by tight end Ethan John on offense and a linebacker corps of Jayven Jackson and Matthew Moore alongside defensive back Eric Zachery. Bethune-Cookman answers with a defensive-back trio of Sam McCall, Naim Lassiter and Keyon Clark, giving that program its own cluster of talent on the back end and edge. The rest of the picks are scattered across nine different schools, from Alabama State quarterback Andrew Body to Southern's Trey Holly and Ckelby Givens, a spread that points to a league without one dominant power beyond Prairie View A&M's frontrunner status.

Prairie View A&M owns 3 of the SWAC's 7 top returning position rooms, stacking backfield and secondary continuity around Chase Bingmon, Ethan John, and Eric Zachery that no other program in the league can match. That concentration of returning production points to Prairie View A&M carrying a rare structural advantage into 2026 while the rest of the conference's best rooms are scattered piecemeal, Alabama State at quarterback with Andrew Body, Arkansas-Pine Bluff at receiver with Kareem Burke, Bethune-Cookman up front with Keyon Clark, and Alabama A&M at linebacker with Wyatt Wright. The league's top talent is not concentrated in one power, it is split across seven different programs, with Prairie View A&M the only school building multiple rooms around returning production at once.
