Patriot 2026 Season Preview

Lehigh's Race to Lose

Lehigh sits atop the Patriot at No. 11 nationally, projected to 9-3, and the gap to everyone else is real rather than close. Villanova, projected 9-3 and No. 17, is the only program built to hang with them, which is why the conference title game projects as a Lehigh-Villanova rematch of the top two spots. Below that pair the league flattens out fast: Lafayette at No. 38 is the best of the rest, with William & Mary, Holy Cross, Colgate and Richmond all bunched between No. 47 and No. 70 fighting for scraps rather than a title shot. This reads as a two-team race with Lehigh holding the edge, not an eight-team scramble.

Lafayette Sets the Bar

Lafayette's seven picks make it the clear standard-bearer, with the front line built by Olivier Camerlain and Michael Vaughn up front and Beckham Dee and Darien Riley at linebacker giving that defense a physical identity, while Kente Edwards and Carson Persing carry the offensive load. Villanova counters with a defensive backfield trio in Omari Bursey, Newton Essiem and Jamie Tyson, suggesting the league's other contenders will have to win through the secondary rather than up front. Bucknell's Sam Milligan and TJ Cadden give Hayden Johnson's Lehigh-led passing attack real competition on the outside, and with Fordham, Richmond and William & Mary each landing a piece, the picks spread across six programs point to a league without one dominant power beyond Lafayette's depth.

Lafayette's Two-Room Edge

No single program dominates the Patriot League's position-room ledger, but Lafayette comes closest, claiming the top running back room behind Kente Edwards and the top defensive line behind Olivier Camerlain for two of the conference's seven groups. Everywhere else the talent is scattered by design: Lehigh's Hayden Johnson tops the quarterback rankings, Bucknell's Sam Milligan headlines the receivers, William & Mary's Jackson Blee leads tight ends, and Villanova doubles up on the defensive side with Omari Bursey at linebacker and Newton Essiem in the secondary. That spread means no team can point to across-the-board returning production as a built-in advantage, Lafayette's pairing of a lead back and a lead lineman is the closest thing to a foundation piece in this league.
