Jax Leatherwood arrives from Southeast Missouri State to run an offense that scored 37.5 points a game, and the gap between a 15th-place finish in the final poll and a 21st preseason slot says the model expects the top-10 defense to feel the roster churn before the offense does.
Can Jax Leatherwood absorb the loss of Kekoa Visperas, who threw for 2,780 yards and 26 touchdowns, and keep this offense from cratering? The efficiency that made Tennessee Tech's offense work, scoring on far fewer yards than league average, was the least sustainable part of an 11-2 run, and asking a Southeast Missouri State transfer to replicate it while breaking in behind a new staff is a tall order. Expect Leatherwood to be capable but not as surgical as his predecessor, which is exactly the kind of dropoff that turns a dominant conference mark into something closer to average.
The number that matters here is 4 percent, Tennessee Tech's projected chance against Mississippi State, a payday trip that will not move the needle on an 8-0 conference team's actual season. The real season plays out on the road at East Tennessee State (54 percent) and at Western Carolina (58 percent), two coin-flip environments that will decide whether Bobby Wilder's group repeats as a conference contender or just piles up wins against a soft middle slate. Home dates with VMI (92 percent) and Samford (89 percent) are the kind of games last year's 11-2, 8-0 team is built to handle, but the projected 8-4 finish says the margin for error away from home is thinner than the record suggests.
Every team in the FCS book. Each one has its own preview: projected finish, what the roster returns, and the games that decide the season.
Every Premium Issue is included with Major League, or you can buy one on its own. Same treatment as the book you just read: a page for every team, the projections behind it, and the games that decide the season.
An 8-4 projection undersells a team picked 1st of 10 in the Southern with a home mark of 7-1 in the sample, and a schedule ranked 48th in difficulty gives Leatherwood room to grow into the job without facing much resistance early. The real ceiling question is national, not conference: the coaches closed 2025 with this program 15th, but the model has it 21st entering 2026, and that gap will not close against a soft slate. Bank the Southern title. The bigger stage is where this team's true level gets tested.
Bobby Wilder just closed out an 11-2 season that included a perfect 8-0 run through conference play, and the No. 21 power rating backs up that this was no fluke. The 2026 roster picture is still filling in with incoming transfers and signees, but a program that just went unbeaten in league games enters the fall with real margin for error while it sorts out who takes over the snaps left behind. Tennessee Tech's floor now looks like a conference-title contender, and anything short of that will read as a step back from where Wilder just took this thing.
Tennessee Tech went 11-2 and 8-0 in conference, but the margins that built it should not hold: an offense that needed just 11.1 yards per point scored, a 2-0 mark in one-score games, and a conference-play yardage margin that outran what the actual win rate should have produced all point toward regression. Jax Leatherwood, who threw for 1,969 yards and 12 touchdowns against 2 interceptions at Southeast Missouri State, now runs an offense that ranked 7th in scoring but had to overachieve its efficiency numbers to get there. The defense is the more repeatable asset, No. 1 nationally in yards per play allowed and 2nd in rushing yards allowed, giving Leatherwood a floor even if the offensive luck evens out.
Kekoa Visperas is gone after throwing for 2,780 yards and 26 touchdowns behind an offense that scored 37.5 points a game, and Tennessee Tech replaces him with a pure portal reshuffle rather than an obvious in-house answer. Jax Leatherwood arrives from Southeast Missouri State off a 1,969-yard, 12-touchdown season, while Zolten Osborne joins from Charleston Southern after throwing for 2,229 yards and 12 scores there, giving Bobby Wilder two experienced transfer arms to sort out. Whoever wins the job inherits an offense that ran the ball effectively (187 yards per game, 19th nationally) but was more middling through the air (230 yards per game, 40th), so the passing production Visperas provided is the real hole Leatherwood or Osborne has to fill.
Q'Daryius Jennings and Quintell Quinn combined for a workload that carried a 187 yard per game rushing attack, and both are gone, along with Obie Sanni and the receiving work Torin Baker did out of the backfield. That production has to come from somewhere new, and the answer so far is UConn transfer MJ Flowers, whose 75 yards and a touchdown last season are a modest sample against what Jennings and Quinn actually put up. Bobby Wilder still has last year's 6.60 yards per play and a top ten scoring offense as the standard, but the backfield that built it is not the one on hand for 2026.
Tennessee Tech's passing game produced 230 yards per game last fall but loses the bulk of its catch production, with Noah Robinson (37-557-6) and Tremel Jones (39-384-2) both gone along with Luke Shields' 3 touchdowns on just 6 grabs. Gabe Nunez arrives from Southern Utah to fill that void, bringing a 56-catch, 647-yard season with him, and he projects as the clear go-to target in an offense that ranked 7th nationally in scoring. With an experienced group around him, Nunez's transition determines whether Bobby Wilder's attack keeps its explosive-play identity (1.35 average value on successful plays, 23rd nationally) or leans harder on the 187-yard rushing attack to carry the load.
Brian Courtney is gone after a 28-catch, 376-yard, 5-touchdown season, taking a chunk of the shallow crossing game that helped Tennessee Tech average 37.5 points and 230 passing yards a game in 2025. Griffin Patterson's departure adds to the reshuffling at the position, leaving Bobby Wilder without a proven pass-catching tight end on the books for 2026. That production has to come from somewhere in a passing attack that ranked just 40th nationally, and how it redistributes those targets will shape whether this offense keeps its explosive edge (23rd in explosiveness) or leans even harder on its run game.
A line that allowed a single sack all season and paved the way for 6.60 yards per play does not need a rebuild so much as reinforcement, and Bobby Wilder went shopping accordingly. Kent State transfers Junior Diallo and Garrett Masterson arrive to anchor the tackle spots, with Robert Morris transfer Joshua Brooks added inside, replacing departed starters Alex Delk, Wes Delk, Gabriel Hecht, Chinonso Opara and Nason Simmons. The passing game ranked just 40th nationally in yards, so the bigger question for this remade front is whether it can push that number up while protecting the elite pass-block marks it built in 2025.
A line that allowed just 86 rushing yards a game and 4.29 yards per play, both among the nation's stingiest marks, loses 12 bodies up front, including Theron Gaines and Miles Cooney. Bobby Wilder turns to the portal to keep that identity intact, bringing in Tyrese Whitaker, who posted 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss at Temple in 2025, and Troy transfer Malaki Pegues. The floor here was elite run defense; whether Whitaker and Pegues can hold that rushing number down against Big South-OVC ground games will say more about this team than anything on the offensive side.
The line that mattered most for Tennessee Tech in 2025 was the one at the point of attack, where the defense allowed just 86 rushing yards a game, second nationally, and 4.29 yards per play, tops in the country. None of that was the work of Aaron Swafford, Kalvyn Crummie or Gio Hales, all of whom are gone now, so Bobby Wilder has to reload the second level without the tacklers who filled those box scores. The passing numbers, 211 yards allowed a game and just 59th nationally, are the softer spot, and how the new linebacker corps fits with that back end will decide whether this defense still travels as one of the sport's stingiest against the run.
Tennessee Tech's secondary was the backbone of an 11-2 run, allowing just 4.29 yards per play, the top mark nationally, while keeping opponents off schedule at a clip that ranked 6th in the country. That group takes a real hit with 11 defensive backs gone, including tackle contributors Jalin Shephard, Kaleb Purdy and Ty Moss, so Bobby Wilder is leaning on an experienced secondary core still in the building to hold that yards-per-play standard rather than starting from scratch. The bigger exposure is through the air, where a defense that ranked just 59th in passing yards allowed per game has less margin for error now that so many bodies who played meaningful snaps on the back end are no longer on campus.
Bobby Wilder brings in Utah State transfer Carter Brown to handle placekicking duties in 2026, a clean swap at a spot that carried real weight in an 11-2, 8-0 conference title run. Brown arrives with no college kicking stats on file, so his early field-goal range and comfort in short-yardage situations will set the tone before anyone in Cookeville trusts him in a one-possession league game. The rest of the specialists picture leans on an experienced group already in the program, giving Wilder a chance to plug Brown in without asking him to also stabilize coverage units or return duties.
Kekoa Visperas is gone after throwing for 2780 yards and 26 touchdowns on an 11-2, 8-0 team, and Tennessee Tech is turning the offense over to Jax Leatherwood, who arrives from Southeast Missouri State with just 1969 yards and 12 touchdowns as a much smaller sample. Bobby Wilder is betting a nine-win conference machine can survive a downgrade in proven passing volume, and with MJ Flowers still an unproven 75-yard rushing addition out of UConn, Leatherwood has to be the one who makes throws Visperas used to make, not just manage the game.
Tennessee Tech went 11-2 and swept its conference slate straight up, yet bettors backing Bobby Wilder's team lost money almost every week, covering just 33% overall and a brutal 25% in conference play. The split says everything about how these wins came: comfortable enough on the scoreboard, rarely comfortable against the number, including a 0% cover mark on the road as an underdog. Whatever new pieces Wilder plugs in for 2026, the lesson from a 4-8 ATS season stands regardless of who lines up: this program wins games far more convincingly than it beats a spread.
