MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsPatriot · Mark Ferrante · 12-3 last season · No. 17 in our FCS ratings
Tanner Maddocks inherits a Patriot League title contender with only 26% of its production intact, and that gap between a fourth-place finish in the final Coaches Poll and a No. 17 projection entering 2026 says this Villanova team is starting over, not picking up where it left off.
Can Tanner Maddocks carry a 12-3 offense for a full season when 21.8% of its production returns? The likelier path is a rocky first half followed by growth, since Maddocks already has game snaps under Mark Ferrante and the skeleton of last year's system stays intact even as the numbers around him reset to almost zero. Villanova's ceiling in 2026 rides entirely on how fast that inexperience turns into command.
Villanova's 2026 slate is built to punish any complacency after last year's 12-3, 7-1 conference run, opening with a trip to Louisville that projects as a near-certain loss and exists to bank a paycheck, not a result. The season actually turns on the two coin-flip weeks against Lehigh at home and at Lafayette, games Mark Ferrante's team is expected to win but by no comfortable margin. Everything else, from Bucknell to Georgetown to Morgan State, is the kind of should-win cushion that lets a projected 8-4 become a real playoff push if Villanova simply handles the games it is favored in.

A 12-3 finish with a 7-1 mark in league play is not a fluke result for Mark Ferrante's group, it lines up with a top-17 power rating that says this roster is built to win the Patriot again. The 2025 season set the bar high, and everything about how Villanova is measured heading into 2026 points to a program operating well above its league. That combination of results and rating gives Ferrante a clear runway to keep this thing rolling rather than rebuild it.
Villanova's 12-3 run was built on a defense that finished 17th in points allowed and a turnover margin of +10, not a prolific passing attack, which is exactly why the quarterback change matters less than it might elsewhere. Tanner Maddocks, who threw for just 78 yards with a touchdown and an interception in his limited look last season, is projected to run an offense that already leans on 178 rushing yards per game and a 43.9% success rate to stay ahead of schedule. If that ground game and the sack-generating defense hold their form, Maddocks does not need to be a finished product for this program to keep winning close to how it did in 2025.
Pat McQuaide's 3,092 yards and 24 touchdowns walk out the door, and Villanova hands the offense to Tanner Maddocks as the front-runner in a camp battle that is not settled. Maddocks has thrown all of 78 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his college career, and he is being pushed by Michael Benincasa, Hudson Heinemann, Dylan Mills and Robert Russo, none of whom carry any prior stats on the books. Whoever wins the job inherits an offense that ran the ball well (178 yards per game, 28th nationally) and moved efficiently (6.10 yards per play, 25th) behind McQuaide, so the passing production Maddocks or a challenger has to replace is the swing factor for 2026.
Isaiah Ragland carried for 755 yards last fall as the clear complement in a backfield that ran through Ja'briel Mace's 977 yards and 12 scores, and now Mace and fellow departed back David Avit (687 yards, 8 TD) are both gone, handing Ragland the lead role outright. Tyler Womack returns as depth after 26 yards on the ground, but the real weight falls on Ragland to replicate the 178 rushing yards per game (28th nationally) this group produced. Brandon Way arrives out of Lancaster Catholic as a high school signee with no college stats yet, a name to track as Villanova tries to keep that same downhill identity intact.
Braden Reed's 34 catches for 518 yards were solid production in a complementary role, but now he's the headliner with Luke Colella (77-1071-8) and Lucas Kopecky (33-551-4) both gone, stripping away the two players who did the heaviest lifting in Villanova's 213 yards-per-game passing attack. Chris Colby's 20 catches and 357 yards give Mark Ferrante a second proven option, while Brandon Binkowski's 2 touchdowns on just 11 grabs hint at redzone value if his target share grows. Andrew Esposito arrives from New Canaan as a name to track, but the passing game's ceiling in 2026 rests on Reed and Colby suddenly producing like lead options rather than complements.
Antonio Johnson's 20 catches, 231 yards and 5 touchdowns walk out the door, and nobody left in the room comes close to replacing that receiving punch. Nolan Clayton's 3 grabs for 33 yards are the top returning tight end numbers on the roster, with Sean Brodnik and Sean Welde each adding a single catch. Colin Gurley arrives from Central York with no prior stats to lean on, so Villanova's 178 rushing yards per game attack, built to spring backs behind that offensive front, will likely ask this group to block first and let the passing production come later.
Villanova's line paved the way for 178 rushing yards per game and gave up just 7 sacks, a foundation that carried a run to the Patriot title and a playoff berth. Five contributors up front are departed, including Temi Ajirotutu, Dan McManus, Jake Picard, Stephane Voltaire and Quin Whalen, so Mark Ferrante has real churn to manage even with the ground game's identity intact. Seneca product Patrick Degnan arrives as the lone reinforcement on record, and how quickly he or an experienced holdover group gels will decide whether that 6.10 yards per play stays close to last year's number.
Mark Ferrante's front produced modest individual numbers even while Villanova ranked 25th in rushing yards allowed per game, and now the three defenders who did register production up front, Ayden Howard, Capri Martin and Obinna Nwobodo, are all gone. Jackson Kraemer arrives from Mt. Lebanon as a three-star addition with no college stats yet, meaning the line's identity for 2026 has to be built largely from unproven pieces rather than continuity. The bigger worry is what happens behind them: a defense that already let opponents stay on schedule at a middling clip and gave up 5.44 yards per play needs whoever wins these jobs to generate more disruption than last year's departed group did.
Shane Hartzell's 23 tackles and team-high 4.5 TFL walk out the door, along with Richie Kimmel, Jason Hall, Dale Law and Colin Kennedy, gutting the group that helped Villanova hold up at 20.9 points allowed per game (17th) and 336 yards allowed per game (24th) a year ago. The run defense ranked a solid 25th at 131 yards per game, but with that much tackle production gone, an experienced front will need whoever fills those reps to tackle in space against Patriot offenses, since opponents already stayed on schedule against this defense at a middling 54th-ranked clip. Mark Ferrante's staff is not starting from scratch given the overall defensive numbers, but replacing nearly the entire tackle sheet at linebacker is the real swing factor in whether Villanova's defense holds up after last season's playoff trip.
Newton Essiem and Jamie Tyson are the two returning tacklers with real snaps behind them, six and five stops apiece, and that experience matters after Christian Sapp's 20 tackles walk out the door along with Kaleb Moody's six. Josh Oluremi, Jayvont Williams and Brenden Toppin all come back too, so this is less a rebuild than a group trying to turn modest individual numbers into a defense that already ranked 17th in points allowed per game and 4th in sacks. The pass defense at 44th in yards allowed is the softer spot, and with four incoming corners from Conwell Egan Catholic, North Point, Don Bosco Prep and Paramus Catholic still unproven at this level, Essiem and Tyson have to carry the coverage shell early.
Jack Barnum's 98 points and 17-of-26 clip on field goals walk out the door, and Luke Myers has kicked exactly nothing in his career, going 0 of 0 with a single point on file. Daniel Mueller takes over punting duties too, having logged just 2 punts at a 29-yard average, a steep drop from Luke Larsen's departed 40.3-yard mark on 47 boots. That leaves Mark Ferrante trusting two specialists with almost no game tape to hold up a 12-3 team that just went 7-1 in Patriot play.
Pat McQuaide's 3092 yards and 24 touchdowns walk out the door, and Villanova hands the offense to Tanner Maddocks, who has thrown all of 78 yards and one score in his limited action. Isaiah Ragland's 755 rushing yards and a receiving corps of Braden Reed and Chris Colby give Maddocks a cushion, but with zero portal help brought in and a recruiting class ranked 159th, the passing game rises or falls on what he shows in live snaps he has barely had.
Villanova went 12-3 straight up, but bettors backing home favorites got burned, going just 3-4 against the spread in those spots. The road is where the number has been soft all year, Mark Ferrante's team covering at an 83% clip away from home and 67% as a road underdog, a split that should keep bettors chasing Villanova on the road rather than laying points at home in 2026. The one spot to avoid entirely is against ranked competition, where a 1-2 cover mark mirrors the 1-2 straight-up record against that level.
