MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsCAA · Jordan Stevens · 6-6 last season · No. 57 in our FCS ratings
Jordan Stevens has to reconstruct nearly the entire operation around Drezek with just 32% of last year's production coming back, and a defense that held up its end at 34th in scoring defense will need to carry an offense that already sat 69th in points before the losses at quarterback.
Can Caden Drezek run a full season as QB1 on almost no track record? With only 25.9% of the offensive production returning around him, Drezek will be throwing to a mostly rebuilt receiving corps and leaning on a line that lost its own continuity, so the most likely path is a rocky first half before things settle. Maine's floor depends on how fast Drezek's decision-making catches up to the reps he is about to get, and history for first-time starters with this little supporting cast points to growing pains before payoff.
Maine's season gets defined early by a brutal road stretch: a 4% shot at Boston College and a 9% shot at App State, both tests that exist to bank experience rather than wins. The real playoff-seeding swing games sit inside the CAA slate, at Rhode Island (30%) and the near-toss-up trip to Elon (41%) and home date with New Hampshire (47%), where Jordan Stevens' group has to prove it belongs above the middle of the conference. With a projected 5-6 mark and a schedule ranked 43rd nationally in difficulty, home matchups against Bryant (73%) and Campbell (70%) become the ones Maine simply has to convert to stay in the playoff conversation.

Jordan Stevens closed 2025 at 5-3 inside the CAA, the clearest sign that Maine belongs in the league's middle tier rather than at the bottom. The overall mark landed flat at 6-6, but a program ranked 57th nationally holding its own week to week against conference foes is the more useful marker heading into 2026. That in-league form is the baseline Stevens has to build from, not the .500 overall record sitting next to it.
Maine's offense was never about the passing game last year, and that will not change with Caden Drezek projected as the starter after throwing for just 58 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in his look last season. The blueprint is clear given a rush attack that ranked 47th nationally in rushing yards per game against a passing unit that ranked 82nd, so the offense will lean on the ground game to keep Drezek's workload manageable. That approach fits a team that finished 88th in third-down rate, where a low-mistake game manager matters more than a gunslinger.
Caden Drezek is the projected starter and front-runner in an open camp battle, but his resume so far is just 58 passing yards, 0 TD and 1 INT, so the job is not settled just because he is taking the early reps. He is replacing Carter Peevy, who threw for 2,234 yards and 17 touchdowns, and that gap is the real story for an offense that already ranked 82nd in passing yards per game a year ago. Noah Carpenter and the rest of the room provide competition, but Maine's rushing attack (164 yards per game, 47th nationally) and Jordan Stevens' offense are built to lean on the ground game while Drezek tries to hold off the field for the job.
Rashawn Marshall (669 yards, 4 TD) carried a solid share of a rushing attack that ranked 47th nationally, and he is back as the clear identity of this backfield. Sincere Baines (711 yards, 3 TD) is gone, which strips out the other half of last year's production, but Mako Grant and Symon Sathler return alongside Marshall to fill that void without any proven stats yet. The path back to a run game that carried Maine to 164 yards per game runs through Marshall shouldering a heavier load while Grant and Sathler prove they belong.
Nick Laughlin (11 catches, 197 yards) and Ty'ee Stephens (8 for 148) are the top returning targets, but neither sniffed the production Scott Woods (55-654-5) and Molayo Irefin (34-400) put up before leaving, and that gap is the whole story for a passing game that already ranked 82nd in yards per game. Jordan Stevens needs Laughlin and Stephens to at least double their volume just to keep pace with what walked out the door, while Aaron Arteaga and Evan Wallace, both under 65 yards last year, have to turn spot duty into real snaps. Maine's offense leaned on a 164-yard rushing attack in 2025, and until this receiving corps proves it can replace 654 yards from one player alone, that run-first identity is not changing.
Elijah Smalls was the only tight end who did anything last season, turning 12 catches into 148 yards and a score, and he heads into 2026 as the clear focal point of the position. Declan McKevitt's 8 catches and Eli Mahan's touchdown grab are both gone, but Jake Kucera caught his own touchdown on limited work and returns alongside Francisco Pratts III, Luke Grigson and Sebastian Ramery. Maine's passing game ranked 82nd nationally in yards a season ago, so any real jump from this group behind Smalls would matter more than the box score suggests.
Maine's ground game produced 164 yards per game and a 47th-ranked rushing attack last season, but the front that built those lanes loses three starters in Ian Erickson, Tyler Williams and Nicolas Cruji. That production came without much help through the air, with the passing offense sitting 82nd nationally, which means whoever fills those three spots up front has to sustain the run game almost by itself while Jordan Stevens searches for more balance. The explosiveness numbers, 35th nationally on successful plays, suggest the scheme works when the line creates space, so the rebuilt group's ability to replicate that push will determine whether 2026 looks like progress or a step back.
Maine's defense finished 14th in yards allowed per game and 20th in yards per play allowed last season, numbers built by a front that produced modest individual tallies but stayed sound enough to keep the whole unit ranked among the nation's stingier groups. That production is now dispersed across five departures, led by Nicolas Kalume and Elias Sherman, each with 6 tackles and a tackle for loss, plus Ta'kai Chisolm, Bryce Purnell and Jaedin Lee. Jordan Stevens inherits a line that has to replace all of that experience at once, but the bar it is chasing is a defense that held opponents to 133 rushing yards a game, a mark the next group up front has to approach again for Maine's overall numbers to hold in the CAA.
Maine's front seven held up its end last season, allowing just 133 yards per game on the ground and ranking 20th nationally in yards per play allowed, but the linebacker corps that helped make that happen is gone. Christian Thomas, Latrell Couchman and Jake Hall combined to account for a big chunk of the tackle production at that level, and none of it returns on paper. Jordan Stevens needs new answers there to keep a defense that finished 14th nationally in yards allowed per game from taking a step back against a CAA slate in 2026.
Maine's secondary was the strength of a defense that gave up just 325 yards a game, 14th nationally, and 192 through the air, but six defensive backs are gone, including Devin Vaught's 13 tackles and a pick-six threat in Jaleal Williams-Evans. Alex Nash-Lally arrives from Delaware to help patch the back end, though a three-star transfer with a single tackle logged is not built to replace that kind of collective production on his own. The pass defense held up well enough in 2025 that Jordan Stevens can lean on an experienced secondary to cover the gaps, but the margin for error shrinks with that much tackling experience walking out the door.
Samuel Tremblay was money in 2025, hitting 9 of 10 field goals with a 45-yard long and 62 points, and he heads back as the settled piece of this kicking operation while Joey Bryson and Kemsley Marsters give Jordan Stevens options behind him. The bigger question is who punts. Anthony Pecorella averaged 40.3 yards on 50 boots and is gone, along with both long snappers, Zach Zoglio and Landon Beal, so Maine has to sort out its punt and snap operation from scratch even as the placekicking stays steady.
Carter Peevy is gone after throwing for 2,234 yards and 17 touchdowns, and Maine hands the offense to Caden Drezek, who has thrown all of 58 yards and one interception in his limited action. Rashawn Marshall's 669 rushing yards and a receiving corps of Nick Laughlin, Elijah Smalls and Ty'ee Stephens give Drezek plenty of returning targets, but with only one portal addition brought in to soften the transition, how fast he plays behind that experience will decide whether Maine's offense holds steady or backslides.
Maine went 6-6 straight up but 8-4 against the number, and that gap is entirely a road story: as a road underdog under Jordan Stevens, the Black Bears covered 80 percent of the time and went 6-1 against the spread away from Orono despite a losing 3-4 mark on the field. Bring them home and the market flips, just 2-3 against the spread and a weak 1-2 as a home favorite, suggesting bettors should fade Maine when it is expected to win in front of its own crowd. The conference numbers back the same read, a 75 percent cover rate in CAA play that makes Maine a live number whenever it travels as the lesser team.
