NEC 2026 Season Preview

Central Connecticut Sets the Bar

Central Connecticut projects as the NEC favorite at No. 65 nationally, but a 5-6 projected mark says this league has no real separation at the top. Duquesne (No. 75) looms as the closest threat, with Long Island University (No. 79) and Mercyhurst (No. 80) close enough behind to crash the race if either front-runner slips. The projected title game lands Central Connecticut against Duquesne, though with the bottom half of the conference bunched between No. 101 and No. 105, this reads like a league where a couple of upsets flips the pecking order fast.

Wagner Tops the Ballot

Wagner leads the NEC preseason all-conference team with 5 selections, all on defense, headlined by linebackers Brendan Leal and Colton Guerrero alongside defensive backs Sam Martin and Alim Parks Jr. Duquesne countered with the offensive headliners, placing quarterback Carson Camp and running back Ness Davis on the first team, while Central Connecticut stacked its receiving corps with Michael Trovarelli and Donovan Wadley. Long Island University's presence up front on both lines, with Kezni Brown and Scoop Gardner Jr. at defensive tackle plus O'Shawn Ross Jr. in the backfield, shows this isn't a one-team league even with Wagner's defensive haul.

Duquesne Sets the Bar

Duquesne holds down the most ground in these rankings, owning both the quarterback room behind Carson Camp and the running back room behind Ness Davis, a backfield pairing no other NEC roster can match. Central Connecticut counters with skill-position and trench presence at once, topping the receiver group with Michael Trovarelli and the defensive line with Wayne Coleman. Elsewhere the conference splits its remaining strength piece by piece, with Robert Morris leaning on tight end Richard Ransom, Long Island University anchored by linebacker Elijah Casey, and Wagner's back end built around Sam Martin. That spread shows the league's returning talent is not concentrated in one place, but Duquesne's dual claim on quarterback and running back gives it the clearest positional identity in the NEC heading into 2026.
