MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsNEC · Adam Lechtenberg · 8-5 last season · No. 65 in our FCS ratings
Brett Griffis takes over an offense that finished 51st in scoring nationally, and a No. 65 power rating with just 43% of production returning says this team's 8-5 leap last year gets tested the moment games stop being decided by the pieces already gone.
Can Brett Griffis carry an offense that returns just 28.2% of its production from a year ago? He gets the job done, because the skill pieces around him are largely intact even as the line and depth chart turn over, and a defense returning 56.9% buys him room to grow into the role without needing to be perfect in September. The bigger risk isn't Griffis himself but whether the supporting cast holds up long enough for him to settle in.
Central Connecticut coming off an 8-5 season with a 6-1 conference mark means little against the trio Adam Lechtenberg actually needs to survive: road trips to Toledo (3% win), Montana State (8%) and South Dakota (20%) that will do more to define 2026 than anything in league play. The rest of the slate breaks favorably, with a projected 5-6 record reflecting a group that should handle Wagner, Robert Morris and Duquesne at reasonable odds but has no business stealing one of those three FBS-caliber road tests. If Central Connecticut wants to prove last year's conference form travels, one of those three names on the schedule has to fall.

An 8-5 mark and a 6-1 conference record are the plain facts sitting on this page, and they point to a program that closed 2025 playing its best football when it mattered. Adam Lechtenberg's group ranks a middling No. 65 nationally, which means the results outran the raw talent grade, a gap that should carry real weight into 2026. That kind of league-play dominance is the story to watch, not a referendum on anyone running the show.
The 8-5 mark and 6-1 conference record flattered Central Connecticut more than the tape did: that conference win rate ran well ahead of what the actual yardage margin against those league opponents supports, and a one-score record that broke in the Blue Devils' favor won't repeat itself on schedule. The offense is the fairer bet to climb, since it needed 14.3 yards for every point last season, worse than the league median, which points to points left on the field rather than a unit playing over its head. Adam Lechtenberg's defense held up its end by forcing opponents to earn their yards, but with 43% of production back, 2026 reads as a team due for a market correction after living dangerously in the close ones.
The passing game that ranked 26th nationally in yards per game a year ago loses the man who ran it. Brady Olson is gone, and Central Connecticut has to identify a replacement without any transfer addition on the books yet, leaving the job to whoever emerges from the room already on campus. That is a real problem for a Adam Lechtenberg offense that scored 26.7 points per game but stayed grounded through the air on early downs, since the whole attack was built around a passing attack that outran its rushing numbers, and the explosiveness (1.19, 104th nationally) shows the offense already leaned on the pass to manufacture chunk plays rather than the ground game to set them up.
Elijah Howard's 1,105 yards and 11 scores walk out the door, and nothing in this backfield replaces that kind of workload on paper. Donny Marcus, who managed just 306 yards behind him last fall, now becomes the clear early-down answer, with Davon Smith Jr. the only other back who has actually touched the ball at this level. Central Connecticut leaned on a 242-yard passing attack (26th nationally) to cover for a rushing game that ranked 74th, and with Kendal Donovan and John Manning IV unproven, that same imbalance looks likely to define the 2026 offense.
Michael Trovarelli's 43 catches for 488 yards and 6 scores anchor a passing attack that finished 26th nationally in yards per game, and he returns with Donovan Wadley (469 yards on just 24 catches) still averaging chunk plays down the field. Central Connecticut loses Paul Marsh Jr. and Ricky Ortega from that group, but the bigger issue was never volume, it was explosiveness, where the offense ranked 104th in value per successful play. Dave Pardo and Damani Williams both return with real snaps on tape, so the question for 2026 is whether that trio can turn short completions into the explosive gains this passing game left on the field.
Sean O'Brien is the only proven target left in this room, and his 15 catches for 99 yards don't come close to replacing Peter Cleary's 24-catch, 322-yard production from a passing attack that ranked 26th nationally in yards per game. Brady Gambee and Ryan Turley both return without a catch on record, so O'Brien's ability to grow into more than a complementary piece will decide whether the tight end spot stays involved in an offense that already leans on the pass over a middling ground game (74th in rushing yards per game). Central Connecticut doesn't need a workhorse here, but it needs O'Brien to turn into the every-down security blanket Cleary was.
Adam Lechtenberg watched this line push a 139-yard rushing attack that ranked 74th nationally while the passing game carried the offense to 242 yards through the air, and now five of the men who built those splits, Randy de la Cruz, Isaiah DeLoatch, AlecZander McCoy, Eric Nunez and Precious Ekeh, are gone. That imbalance was already the story in 2025, with explosiveness sitting at 104th nationally even as the offense moved the ball at 382 yards per game, and the run game is the unit most exposed by the turnover up front. Whoever settles in at those five spots inherits a line that has to find more push on the ground before this offense can call itself complete.
Central Connecticut's defense held opponents to 149 rushing yards a game and kept 39.1% of snaps on schedule (29th nationally) last season, but none of the tackle production behind that front returns by name, with Sharod Watkins, Reggie Darkah, Joshua Mason, Clifton Thompson and Dylan Jones all gone from the line. Adam Lechtenberg is working from an experienced group up front even without those names on the depth chart, and the real swing factor is whether that unit can hold the rushing number near last year's mark while the pass defense, already 76th in yards allowed per game, does not get worse. If the run front slips even a little, a defense that ranked 26th in points allowed per game gets exposed fast.
Jared Massay's 2 tackles top the returning tallies at linebacker, which tells the real story here: the production that mattered last season, from Jack Stoll's 5 tackles and a TFL to Devon Anderson's own TFL, is gone. That thin returning tackle count matches a defense that finished 39th nationally in sacks and 63rd in tackles for loss, so Central Connecticut was never winning many snaps behind the line even before the shakeup. TJ Shittu, Tymaine Smith and Carter Banks all logged minimal reps in 2025, meaning 2026 is effectively a chance for that trio, plus JJ Gibson and Lexington Hunter, to turn spot duty into the answer for a run defense that already ranked a respectable 53rd in yards allowed per carry.
A defense that kept opponents off schedule on 39.1% of snaps, good for 29th nationally, now has to replace all five of its credited tacklers in the secondary, Brayden Hall, Jahvante Royal, Dekavis Preston, Ramal West and Khristan Hernandez. None piled up gaudy numbers individually, which is exactly the point: this was a group effort, and the 230 yards allowed through the air (76th) shows there was already room to tighten coverage before the churn hit. Adam Lechtenberg leans on an experienced secondary to hold the rushing defense's modest gains (149 yards allowed, 53rd) while whoever settles in at corner tries to keep the pass defense from sliding further down the national charts.
Jack Hennessey went 14 of 18 on field goals with a long of 35 and piled up 81 points, giving Adam Lechtenberg the rare luxury of a proven leg rather than a question mark. The punting picture stays crowded and productive too, with Zach Bonini averaging 38.5 yards on 35 attempts and Colby Bernier adding 37.9 on 28 boots, so field position battles that helped produce an 8-5, 6-1 league mark should not slip. With Hennessey, Bonini and Bernier all back, this is a unit built to hold steady rather than one searching for answers.
Central Connecticut's skill talent is largely intact, with Michael Trovarelli, Donovan Wadley and Dave Pardo all back after combining for double-digit touchdown catches, but none of it matters if Brett Griffis cannot turn a run-first offense into one that stresses defenses through the air. Griffis is projected to start with just 17 career passing yards on the books, replacing Brady Olson's departed production, and with zero transfer additions at the position, Central Connecticut has no fallback plan if he struggles to grow into the job.
Central Connecticut went 6-1 straight up at home under Adam Lechtenberg and bettors backing that trend covered at a 67% clip, with home favorites cashing three of five. The market turns on them the moment they leave campus, a 2-4 straight up mark on the road that produced just a 40% cover rate and a 33% cover as road underdogs. That split defines the number to watch for 2026, home games are where the smart money sides with Lechtenberg's group, road trips are where it fades them.
