Jake Strong gets a full 2026 with the job settled and 65% of the roster back around him, which puts the burden squarely on him to turn a 71st-ranked scoring offense into the reason McNeese climbs out of the middle of the Southland instead of hovering at 66th nationally.
Can McNeese replace its ground game without Coleby Hamm in the backfield? The offense returns 67.7% of its production, but that figure is misleading when the leading rusher is gone and Jake Strong is left to carry an offense that was already turnover prone. Expect the passing game to shoulder more of the load out of necessity, which is a tough ask for a unit still searching for its identity on the ground.
The trip to LSU is a payday, not a puzzle to solve, but the real season lives in the other two long shots: Tarleton State at home and the SE Louisiana road trip, where McNeese sits at 19 and 25 percent respectively. Split those two and Matt Viator's group is right back in the Southland mix, given projected tossups at home against Nicholls and Lamar and a road date at Incarnate Word. Miss both and a 4-8 projection looks generous, because the rest of the slate, from Northwestern State to Houston Christian, is built to be won.

Matt Viator's 2025 reads two ways at once. The overall mark, 5-7, sits on the wrong side of .500, but a 4-3 league record shows a team that competed inside Southland play even as the non-conference slate dragged the season under water. A power rating of 66th nationally lines up with that middle-of-the-road profile, neither a collapse nor a breakthrough, which makes 2026 about whether McNeese can turn conference-caliber football into a winning record start to finish.
The run game is legitimate, McNeese's 195 yards per game on the ground ranks 15th nationally, but Jake Strong's return at quarterback is the swing factor for 2026. Strong threw 13 interceptions against 11 touchdowns last season, and a rushing attack that strong can only mask so much when the passing game sits 90th in yards per game and the offense has coughed up the ball at a minus-2 turnover margin. If Strong cuts the giveaways, this offense already has the pieces to jump past 71st in scoring; if he does not, the ground game just buys time for the same losing formula.
Jake Strong is back after throwing for 2,008 yards with 11 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, and that pick total is the whole story for McNeese in 2026. The offense moved the ball fine, 380 yards per game with a run attack that ranked 15th nationally, but the passing game sat 90th and the turnovers capped it at 23.5 points per game. Strong keeps the job, and cleaning up those interceptions while leaning on that ground game is what turns last year's 5-7 into something better. McNeese also signed three-star Brady Barrier out of Barbers Hill as a high school recruit, giving the room a developmental arm behind Strong rather than a challenger for the starting job.
Tre'Vonte Citizen's 503 yards behind a line that ranked 15th nationally in rushing yards per game gives McNeese a real foundation, even with Coleby Hamm's 635 yards and Bryce Strong gone from the backfield. Louisiana Tech transfer Omiri Wiggins, who piled up 468 yards and 4 scores last season, slots in as a co-starter rather than a replacement, pairing with Citizen to keep the ground game as the offense's identity while the passing attack sits at 90th nationally. Jaylen Thompson and Marquez Davis provide proven change-of-pace carries, so Matt Viator's offense should again lean on the run to mask a passing game that has to find its footing.
Kameran Senegal's modest 23 catches for 252 yards was the top return mark in a passing game that finished 90th in the country, and that's the number that should worry Matt Viator most given who's gone. Jonathan Harris took his 25 catches, 297 yards and 5 touchdowns out the door, and no returning wideout matched even that scoring total, let alone that per-catch pop. Matthew McCallister and Makhi Paris offer some volume behind Senegal, but McNeese leaned on a 195-yard rushing attack last year for a reason, and until someone in this room proves capable of the big play, that ground-and-pound identity isn't changing.
Logan Mauldin's 26 catches and 341 yards walk out the door, leaving Reed Boyd as the only tight end with anything on the stat sheet, just 5 catches for 60 yards and a score. Trevon Bradford, Ikenna Nwobu and Lynkon Romero all return but arrive in 2026 without a catch on record, so Boyd effectively becomes the position's proven option by default. McNeese leaned on the ground game (195 rushing yards per game, 15th nationally) while its passing attack sat at 90th, so this group's receiving numbers may stay modest even if Boyd's role grows.
McNeese ran for 195 yards a game a year ago, good for 15th nationally, even while the passing game stalled at 90th and the line let quarterbacks get hit only 5 times all season. That efficiency now has to survive the exits of Cody Brackeen, William Bressi, Elijah Melendez, Aaron Session and Jo Cryer, a departure list heavy enough that this reads as a retooling job for Matt Viator up front. Eric Aschenbeck, Arthur Avila, Ian Carter, Travis Cedotal and Joseph Cryer sit atop the returning group, and interior additions Jadyn Rhodes and Sami Abdelhak arrive via the high school ranks to help replace the numbers lost, with the ground game the unit's identity to protect.
Run defense was the soft spot last season, 194 yards a game on the ground ranked 110th nationally, even as the pass rush and coverage held up well enough to keep the unit's overall yardage number respectable. Matt Viator went to the portal and high school ranks to retool the interior, bringing in Caden Branston from Colorado State, Jacob Molina and Lenord Howard at defensive line, plus edge rusher Cullen McIntosh from Oak Grove. All of that talent arrives with seven linemen gone, none of last year's departed group (Phillip Bradford, Welland Williams, Tony Gibson, Masey Lewis, Keenan Landry) racking up more than a handful of tackles, so the new arrivals are not just replacing box-score production, they are the answer to a rush defense that has to get off the field on early downs in the Southland.
Landon Barrett and Emauri Sibley are back after modest 2025 numbers, 18 tackles and 15 tackles respectively, but the alarming figure sits at the line of scrimmage, where McNeese ranked 110th in rushing yards allowed per game at 194. Jackson Anders, Anthony Coleman, Wyatt Fontenot and Kesean Hines all return without stats on file, giving Matt Viator experienced bodies but little proof anyone can consistently win at the point of attack. The pass defense held up at 19th nationally in yards allowed, so the swing season comes down to whether this linebacker group can clean up the rush numbers without much of a track record to lean on.
Shyaub Brinkley's 14 tackles now stand as the back end's top return, and that number tells the real story: McNeese's secondary held up in coverage last year (19th nationally in passing yards allowed) even as the front let running backs churn through it for 194 yards a game, 110th in the country. Brinkley, Mason Edwards and Jermaine Hargraves all return to anchor a group that must again mask a leaky front, but the loss of Javon Davis and his 14 tackles alongside Maurquel Price's 9 removes real experience from that equation. Denrie Hamilton and Paityn Collins arrive to add bodies at safety and corner, but this room's ceiling in 2026 still rides on Brinkley and Edwards tightening up a run defense the back seven cannot fully cover for.
Deaglan Camron made both his field goal tries last year, including a 35-yarder, but Fabrizio Pinton's 42 points and 47-yard long are the bigger loss, and Matt Viator has Dominick Bjodstrup and Landon Daughdril to sort out alongside Camron for the job. George Dixon returns after averaging 38.4 yards on his 12 punts, giving the coverage units a steady leg even as the placekicking picture stays unsettled. Snapping is stable with Trent Baker and Pierson Parent both back, so the volatility here is strictly about who kicks, not who snaps.
Jake Strong threw 13 interceptions against 11 touchdowns last season, and McNeese handed him a full backfield reset rather than a fix for that ratio. Coleby Hamm's 635 rushing yards are gone, leaving Tre'Vonte Citizen, Jaylen Thompson and Louisiana Tech transfer Omiri Wiggins to soak up carries and keep Strong from having to force throws into coverage. If that run game clicks, Strong's turnovers matter less; if it stalls, he is right back to trying to bail out possessions himself.
McNeese covered every home date under Matt Viator, going 3-0 against the spread there including a perfect 2-0 mark as a home favorite, even while the straight-up record at Cowboy Stadium sat at just 3-3. The road tells the opposite story: a 2-4 cover mark and 33% cover rate as a road underdog shows bettors have consistently overvalued this team away from home. Conference play backs the split further at 4-2 against the spread, and the 4-2 mark the week after a loss suggests Viator's group responds well once expectations get reset.
