Byron McNair returns to run an attack that managed just 12.9 points a game a year ago, and until Tennessee State finds a way to score with a defense still surrendering 26.6 a game, 71% returning production only guarantees more of the same 2-10 finish.
Can Reggie Barlow's team actually be better than a 2-10, 0-8 record suggests? The conference-play numbers say yes: Tennessee State's yardage margin against league opponents implied a win rate nowhere close to 0.0%, and a turnover margin of -9 and a 1-3 mark in one-score games both point to bad luck rather than bad football. The offense also burned 19.6 yards per point scored against a 13.9 median, so even modest gains in finishing drives, with Byron McNair running the show and Kendric Rhymes's 497 rushing yards needing to be replaced, should turn several of those near-misses into wins in 2026.
The trip to Georgia is a payday, not a puzzle, and Reggie Barlow's roster has no path there. The season turns instead on the road, at Gardner-Webb and at Lindenwood, the two lowest-probability conference tests on the slate outside that Georgia trip, both games Tennessee State projects as an underdog in. A 78th-ranked schedule and a projected 4-8 mark say this team can bank the Morgan State and Alabama A&M coin-flips at home, but climbing out of a 0-8 conference season starts with stealing one of those true road tests.

Tennessee State finished 2-10 and went winless through conference play at 0-8, a full-season stretch that left the Tigers ranked 108th in the power ratings. Reggie Barlow's group did not lose close either, dropping every league game, which means 2026 is about finding any traction in the conference rather than chasing a specific finish. A single league win would already mark tangible progress off that 0-8 mark.
Byron McNair returns as the settled starter after throwing for 1,558 yards, 9 TD and 6 INT behind an offense that ranked 122nd in total yards per game and 121st in yards per play. The explosiveness number, 21st nationally, hints McNair can hit chunk plays when the line gives him room, but a 28.7% third-down rate and a minus-9 turnover margin (110th) show how often those flashes got buried. The defense held up its end, allowing just 340 yards per game (27th) and 172 passing yards (11th), so 2026 comes down to whether McNair and this offense can stop wasting that work.
Byron McNair threw for 1,558 yards last season but also six interceptions, and his 9-to-6 TD-to-INT ratio tells the real story of a Tennessee State offense that finished 123rd nationally in scoring and 120th in success rate. McNair is back as the established starter, which matters more for stability than upside, since the passing game managed just 170 yards per game through the air behind him. South Florida transfer Marcelis Tate arrives with no prior production to speak of, so the burden for fixing an offense that ranked 121st in yards per play still falls on McNair improving his decision-making, not on a new arm taking the job.
Zack Simmons-Brown's 456 yards were the lone bright spot in a rushing attack that finished 123rd in the country, and he now has to carry the room without Kendric Rhymes, whose 497 yards on the ground are gone. Minnesota transfer Tre Berry arrives to add a fresh option, but Tennessee State's ground game managed just 84 yards per game and a 4.34 yards per play mark last fall, so any real jump in 2026 has to start with Simmons-Brown breaking more of the explosive gains this offense rarely created. Lelan Wilhoite and Trevor Pearson II return with modest totals, giving Reggie Barlow bodies who know the system even if the production has to come from somewhere new.
Snap Reed's 35 catches and 4 touchdowns were the closest thing to a bright spot in an offense that managed just 12.9 points per game, and he heads a receiving corps that returns almost everyone from that unit. Devaughn Slaughter's 55 catches and 551 yards walk out the door, but Brock Montgomery, Tyson Edwards and Anthony Taylor all come back with real snaps, and Utah State transfer Carlos Orr-Gillespie adds another body to a group that otherwise stays largely intact. The volume of returning targets matters less than the machine around them, since Tennessee State ranked 121st in yards per play and 119th on third downs, so Reed and company need a functional line and quarterback before any of these numbers move.
Connor Ruth's 8 catches for 60 yards and 2 touchdowns were the only tight end production of note on a Tennessee State offense that managed just 4.34 yards per play, 121st nationally, and Ruth returns as the clear focal point of the position again. Jason Hoath Jr. is back after a quiet 2 catches for 8 yards, and Exavious Reed has no prior stat line to point to, so this room's ceiling in 2026 still runs through what Ruth can add as a receiving threat for a passing game that finished 99th in yards per game. With Christian Jones gone, Ruth is the only tight end here with a track record of scoring, and Tennessee State's explosive-play rate of 1.37 (21st nationally) hints that a bigger role for him could translate into real chunk plays if the passing volume grows.
Reggie Barlow's line produced one of the worst rushing attacks in the country a year ago, 84 yards per game and 4.34 yards per play, numbers that flow straight from a front that could not open holes on 123rd-ranked ground production. Christopher Barnett, Breon Brown, Shamar Crawford, Darien Farmer and Parker Harden are back up front, but with Anthony Smith, Darius Neals, KJ McCou and Veguer Jean-Jumeau all out of the room, this is a group being rebuilt around whichever of those returners claims the interior jobs. Until Tennessee State shows it can protect and move a defense on the ground, the third-down rate that sat at 28.7% last season is the fairer expectation than any leap forward.
Tennessee State's defense held up better than a 2-10 record suggests, ranking 11th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (172) and 36th in yards per play allowed (5.41), even as the run defense lagged at 77th (169 yards per game). Shaun Ayers and Demetrius Gore anchor the interior, with Terence Carpenter II and Brandon Collins back off the edge alongside Camron Douglas and Bryce Gray, giving Reggie Barlow a defensive line built almost entirely around returning bodies rather than reinforcements. The lone newcomer of note is Terrell Evans, a high school signee out of Hialeah, and until the run-stopping numbers move, that pass rush efficiency is this group's calling card.
Tennessee State's front seven held up better than its record suggested, ranking 27th in yards allowed per game and 11th against the pass, and that's the group Epoki Fakaosi, Zachariah Lee, Caleb Reid, Sammy Taylor and Matthew Wilson return to try to sustain. None of the five carries a tackle number on file, so the coaching staff under Reggie Barlow is banking on unlisted production rather than proven stats to hold that pass defense steady. Arkansas transfer Justin Logan arrives with just one tackle logged, but the bigger swing factor is whether this largely unproven returning core can keep the run defense from sliding further after it already gave up 169 yards per game on the ground.
Tennessee State's pass defense was the surprising strength of a 2-10 team, ranking 11th nationally in passing yards allowed at 172 per game even as the run defense sagged to 77th. That production comes back mostly intact, with Kaiki Baker, Jayden Coleman, Jayden Cook, Byron Davis, Jacorris Foreman and Jakobe Freeman all on hand to build on a group that kept 39.6% of opponent plays from staying on schedule, good for 35th nationally. Jordan Francis joins as a high school signee out of Redan, adding a corner to a room that already has the pieces to keep tightening a defense that leaked yards on the ground but rarely through the air.
Freddy Perez already handled the placekicking load in 2025, hitting 14 of 21 field goals with a 48-yarder and 56 points, and he returns as the steadiest piece of a special teams unit that otherwise needs answers. The bigger hole is at punter, where Mark Shenouda's 62 punts and 42.9-yard average are gone, leaving Roman Mathis, who logged just five punts a year ago, as the closest thing to an experienced leg. Long snapper Connor Ridderhoff and kicker Daniel Bravo are back without stat history, so Perez's leg is the one proven constant Reggie Barlow can lean on while the punting job gets sorted out.
Tennessee State lost 10 more transfers than it brought in and replaces its leading rusher, which means Byron McNair has to be the steadying constant rather than another variable. He threw for 1,558 yards and 9 touchdowns last season but also 6 interceptions, and with Zack Simmons-Brown taking over the backfield and Snap Reed his most proven target, McNair's turnover rate is the difference between competitive losses and another winless conference slate.
Tennessee State went 0-2 against the spread as a home favorite, the clearest sign that market respect and on-field results never lined up under Reggie Barlow's crew last fall. The number that actually flatters this program is on the road, where a 2-2 cover mark as an underdog beat a 0-4 straight-up mark by a wide margin, meaning close losses away from home covered even as the wins never came. Conference play was where the season really cratered, an 0-8 mark that produced only a 3-5 cover record, and until that changes, backing this team as a home chalk pick is the losing side of the ledger heading into 2026.
