James Murphy is the projected starter for an offense that returns 78% of its production but still ranked 52nd in scoring a year ago, meaning Brown's 2026 ceiling rests on whether he can turn near-identical pieces into more points than a 5-5 team managed with them the first time around.
Who does James Murphy target now that Ty Pezza and his 44 catches are off the roster? Murphy himself returns and Brown keeps 78.1% of its offensive production, so the passing game does not need to be rebuilt from scratch, just reshuffled toward whoever inherits Pezza's targets. Expect Brown to lean on that continuity at quarterback rather than the receiver room, with the ground game picking up slack the passing attack can no longer promise on its own.
Brown's real season comes down to three road-heavy tests: a trip to Yale where the Bears sit at just 22%, a road date at Rhode Island (28%), and a home meeting with Harvard that's basically a coin flip at 34%. Everything else on the slate skews favorable, with Bryant, Cornell and Columbia all sitting at 63% or better, which is why a 4-6 projection feels like a team that can bank the easy ones but hasn't shown it can flip one of those low-percentage games. James Perry's group has enough on the calendar to get to five wins if even one of Yale, Rhode Island or Harvard breaks right.

James Perry closed 2025 at 5-5, but a 2-5 mark in league play is the number that actually matters at an Ivy program built around conference standing. The overall record and a middling power rating flatten out to neutral, so 2026 comes down to whether Brown can turn competitive non-conference results into wins against Ivy opponents. That gap between the .500 overall mark and the losing league record is the story to watch.
Brown's offense was a study in contrasts last year, ranking 7th nationally in passing yards per game at 283 while its ground game languished at 119th with just 89 yards per game, and that lopsided identity should carry over. James Murphy is the projected starting quarterback for 2026, and given how the passing attack carried the offense to 52nd in scoring, the plan is clearly to keep throwing rather than fix the run. The bigger swing factor is a defense that let opponents stay on schedule 46.2% of the time (111th), so even with a +6 turnover margin bailing out possessions, Brown's ceiling depends on that unit tightening up while Murphy's arm keeps the offense afloat.
James Murphy takes over an offense that already knew how to throw the ball, with 283 passing yards per game ranking 7th nationally a year ago, but the ground game lagged badly at 89 rushing yards per game, 119th in the country. That split defines Murphy's job in 2026: lean on the same vertical passing attack that carried Brown's yardage totals while the run game tries to climb out of the bottom tier of FBS production. Will Currid, who threw for 34 yards last season, returns as a backup option, but this offense goes as far as Murphy's arm takes it.
Matt Childs put up 517 yards and 8 touchdowns behind a run game that still ranked just 119th in rushing yards per game, and he comes back as the clear centerpiece after Qwentin Brown's 233 yards and 5 scores left the room. Jackson Bennett and Eli Jones return with modest carries to lean on behind him, and Colby Isabelle is back without stats on file. Brown added La Salle College recruit Desmond Ortiz, a three-star signee with no college numbers yet, to a backfield that will keep leaning on Childs while a 283-yard passing attack carries the offense.
Trevor Foley's 32 catches and 569 yards now stand as the room's clear top mark after Brown loses Ty Pezza's 7-touchdown production and Solomon Miller's 359 yards, a real hit for an offense that ranked 7th nationally in passing yards per game. Pearson Hill and Michael Nesbit each caught enough passes to suggest a real second option, but neither approached Pezza's explosiveness, and the offense already ranked 91st in explosiveness even with him on the field. Saphir Miller arrives from Edgewater to compete for a role, but the passing attack's ceiling in 2026 rides on whether Foley can turn a productive complementary season into a true focal-point one.
Levi Linowes caught 19 balls for 239 yards last fall and is back as the only proven pass-catcher at the position, which matters given Brown threw for 283 yards a game, 7th nationally, in James Perry's offense. Dillon Golden's modest 78 yards are the only other production to reallocate, so Maximilian Ciovacco, Jadon Garza-Pender, Henry Hurd, Pierce Leverett and Benjamin Taylor are all auditioning for real snaps behind Linowes with no statistical track record to lean on. With the ground game stuck at 89 yards per game, 119th nationally, Brown's tight ends will keep leaning on the pass to move the chains, and that puts Linowes squarely in the middle of the offense's identity.
Brown's ground game managed just 89 yards per game on the ground last season, a number that will follow Mark Banbury, Eddie Battista, Sam Brackney, Kai Faucher and John Green into 2026 as the front five tries to answer for it. That imbalance, 283 passing yards a game against a rushing attack ranked 119th nationally, points to a unit that leaned on the pass to survive and never controlled the line of scrimmage. With Liam Halligan, Nick Manley and Marco Monteiro no longer in the room, James Perry is counting on Banbury, Battista, Brackney, Faucher and Green to turn a pass-first necessity into an actual choice.
Brown's front gave up 5.56 yards a play last season and kept opposing offenses ahead of the chains on 46.2% of snaps, a number that ranked 111th and explains why this line group looks so different now. Mason Baldic, Teo Casares, Nick Chao, Nolan Daly, Braden Ewing and Liam Fitzgerald are all back to anchor the room, while John Luke Minner and Miles Gaito arrive at edge to add juice off the corner. With Owen Clarke, Caden Harman, Pat O'Neill, John Starman and Nolan Clark all off the roster, the returning six carry the weight of fixing a run defense that allowed 164 yards a game and a pass rush that has to speed up how quickly Brown gets off the field on third down.
Tommy Dunn, Nathan Kunickis, Max Malo, Stefano Montella, Jack Morse and Shay O'Kelly all return to a front seven that let opponents stay on schedule at a 46.2% clip, 111th nationally, and gave up 164 rushing yards a game. None of that group has a snap of production on the books, so the continuity is about bodies in the room, not proven playmakers, and Brown is banking on that experience translating to fewer busted assignments after finishing 88th in yards allowed per game. Savannah Country Day product Hayes Beaver joins the mix, but the leap this defense needs comes from Dunn and Malo turning last year's reps into actual tackles for loss.
Jeff Bandy, Alejandro Bello, Miles Brophy, Ian Browne, Airiz Coleman Bey and Cap Davis all return to a secondary that gave up 237 passing yards per game (84th) and let opponents win on schedule far too often, ranking 111th in keeping plays behind the chains defensively. That six-man group staying together matters more than the five departures behind them, since continuity is the closest thing Brown has to an answer for a defense that finished 88th in total yards allowed. William Chen arrives from Southlake Carroll to add a fresh body at safety, but the 2026 outlook rides on whether the returning core can turn steady snaps into fewer chunk plays rather than on any newcomer fixing it alone.
Drew Crabtree missed a third of his field-goal tries a year ago, going 6 of 9 with a long of 38, and that inconsistency is the real swing factor for a Brown team that finished 2-5 in Ivy play. Malcolm Flynn gives James Perry a steady weapon in the punting game at 39.6 yards a boot, and long snapper Michael Pedrotti is back to keep the operation clean. The margin in close Ivy games often comes down to whether Crabtree turns that 6-of-9 accuracy into something more reliable in 2026.
With Ty Pezza's 44 catches and 579 yards gone from the passing game and no portal help arriving to replace them, Brown's offense tilts toward the ground. Matt Childs, coming off 517 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, becomes the engine James Murphy leans on while Trevor Foley and Levi Linowes settle into bigger roles in the passing game. If Childs cannot push his workload past last year's pace, this offense has no obvious answer for the receiving production it just lost.
Brown went 5-5 straight up but 7-3 against the spread, the kind of split that tells the real story of James Perry's 2025 team beating numbers even in weeks it lost the game. The bounce-back tendency stands out most: a 4-1 mark against the spread the week after a loss shows a team that rarely got run out of two straight, even while going 2-5 in conference play straight up. The one soft spot was expectation, an 0-1 mark as a home favorite, meaning the market trusted Brown more than the results backed up whenever it was actually supposed to win.
